3 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24, 2012 The Year of Faith Last time we looked at the two main themes that drove forward the entire work of Vatican II: bringing the up to date and returning to the original sources of Catholicism. Today we'll consider another set of two important columns which formed the foundation of Vatican II, the two main documents which set the tone for everything the council was about: the document on the in the modern world and the document on the sacred liturgy. Interestingly, they are like bookends for the work of Vatican II. The document on the liturgy was the first work promulgated by the bishops and the document on the in the modern world was the last one. These two main documents embody the two great themes of Vatican II: bringing the up to date and returning to the sources of Catholicism. In a certain sense, these two documents unify all the other fourteen documents into a common direction. The document on the liturgy which began the work of the council is more than just an overview of rituals and how they should be modified for the present age. The starting point is that the entire People of God comes in contact with the Holy Trinity through the liturgy and therefore the celebration of the liturgy is the most important thing that Christians ever do. Everything else in our Christian life must be rooted in the liturgy since, unless we are joined to Christ, nothing we do can ever bear fruit. This sets the tone: God wants us to know him and be in a relationship with him; the entire life of the, therefore, is simply a response to God's first step toward us. The other main document ended the work of the council, the document on the in the modern world. The title of that document, Gaudium et Spes, Joy and Hope, sums up the optimism that shaped the bishops of Vatican II. The is to be the bearer of joy and hope to all the world because the offers Jesus Christ to the world. The focus throughout that whole document is evangelization, the work of spreading the gospel. Since Christ has revealed himself to us, we now must reveal him to the world, particularly since modern society so often lives in great despair. Modern man is full of doubts and questions; the only real answer to those questions is Christ. The has good news to offer people who are adrift and Christ expects his followers to do so. Next time we will begin our examination of each of the 16 documents, one by one, beginning with these two main documents. Fr. Gregory

6 Defending Our First Freedom [The following is an excerpt from Cardinal Donald Wuerl concerning the government s recent HHS mandate that Catholic institutions provide services against their own religious teachings which has led to lawsuits filed in federal court to overturn this mandate, of which the Diocese of Joliet is a plaintiff.] The First Amendment enshrines in our nation s Constitution the principle that religious organizations must be able to practice their faith free from government interference. As is generally the case with laws that may burden religious exercise, the mandate includes an exemption for religious organizations. And if the religious exemption in the mandate were reasonable, there would have been no need for this lawsuit-after all, we are indeed religious under any sensible definition. However, the mandate s exemption is the narrowest ever adopted in federal law. Crucially, it does not include any organization that serves the general public. So under this mandate, our Catholic hospitals, schools, and social service programs, which serve all people, are not religious enough to be allowed to follow our Catholic beliefs For two millennia, Roman Catholic entities have been engaged in charitable works serving not just Catholics, but non-catholics as well, with the understanding that these works are an essential part of Christian love and the practice of the Christian faith. As our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has recently put it, love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind, is as essential to [the Catholic ] as the ministry of the sacraments and preaching of the Gospel. The cannot neglect the service of charity any more than she can neglect the Sacraments and the Word. Considering the dedicated efforts put into these good works, it is understandable to feel somewhat disheartened to see our government attempt to force the out of the public square. To be clear, that is the message that the HHS mandate conveys: our beliefs are not welcome. Those who have the temerity to hold onto their convictions will be fined. The First Amendment s guarantee of religious freedom, however, was not meant to protect merely the right to worship, but also the right to contribute the fruits of our faith to the common good. And until now, our government had chosen to honor that guarantee But HHS s conception of what constitutes the practice of religion is so narrow that even Mother Teresa would not have qualified. We know that such a law cannot stand The did not choose this fight. It is HHS that has departed from longstanding practice and precedent to change the law; our response merely aims to preserve our existing rights. Although the would naturally remain open to good faith negotiations with the Administration, previous discussions yielded no reasonable compromise, and the has been given little reason to think further attempts would be fruitful. Bringing this claim to the courts ensures a fair and impartial hearing-one that we believe we will win. For up-to-date information on this matter, please visit In the coming weeks and months, may God remind us that the freedom of religion is only meaningful when we exercise it. And may God look with favor on our prayers for the success of this endeavor we have undertaken in His name. Cardinal Donald Wuerl (Archbishop of Washington) The Bishops have called for a Fortnight for Freedom - June 21-July 4. Please go to for more information on this important time of prayer and action! You may pray the following prayer daily with your fellow parishioners at the 7:30am morning mass here at St. Paul the Apostle O God Our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Copyright 2012, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. All rights reserved.

7 Paulites Annual Picnic Crisis Pregnancy Center Opens in Joliet JOLIET Perhaps not a moment too soon, a new 2,500 square-foot crisis pregnancy center will open this week at 2423 Glenwood Ave., two blocks west of Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Woman's Choice Services, a Catholic pregnancy help network based in Lombard, has outgrown its Crest Hill location and now will be able to expand its services to women in need. The real beauty of the new center is that we can now offer ultrasounds in Joliet as well as in Lombard. This is one of the most effective tools we have for saving lives, as the majority of abortion-minded women who have come through our doors and have seen the ultrasound image have chosen life for their babies. Along with free ultrasounds, Woman's Choice Services also provides free pregnancy testing, unplanned pregnancy counseling, mothering programs and parenting classes, post-abortion recovery, pregnancy support, and agency referrals. Please join us on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 10:00a.m. as Bishop R. Daniel Conlon will join the staff and Board members of Woman's Choice Services, to preside at the grand opening ceremony for our new office.
