3 16th Sunday Ordinary Time July 21, 2013 FROM FATHER JOHN: All the good works in the world are not equal to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass because they are the works of men; but the Mass is the work of God. Martyrdom is nothing in comparison for it is but the sacrifice of man to God; but the Mass is the sacrifice of God for man. St. John Vianney As you know, both of our previous popes (Blessed John Paul II and Benedict XVI) emphasized the critical need for New Evangelization. A couple who grew up prior to the Second Vatican Council approached me after mass a few years ago and the gentleman gruffly said to me, Fr. I don t understand all this New Evangelization [stuff]. When I was a kid, they gave me the Baltimore Catechism and told me to memorize it. It what was good enough for me, how come it s not good enough for the kids today? I think that this man was asking a good question that gets at the heart of the matter. The question is really what is the New Evangelization and what is Catechesis? They are actually two different things. Evangelization is exposing people to why they should believe in God and live a life of faith. In other words, giving people a reason to believe, to become disciples and to live active and vibrant lives of faith. Catechesis is all about teaching people the content of our Catholic faith; in other words, teaching people what the dogmas and doctrines that we believe in mean. These are both critically important in the life of the church and they exist in tension with each other. Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The names of the Twelve Apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus. Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus, Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: The Kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Mt 10:1-7) Jesus shows us what the New Evangelization really is in this scripture passage. The New Evangelization does not mean trying to convert the unbaptized, to convert Protestants, etc. Jesus tells us to go to the lost sheep of our own House, our own, to go to the lost sheep of the Catholic and convert them. The New Evangelization really means making an effort to bring fallen away Catholics back to the Faith. It also means converting those who are already practicing their Catholic faith to an ever deeper faith. His Holiness, Pope Francis, recently spoke to a group of seminarians who were studying for the priesthood. He said to them, I heard a seminarian, a good seminarian who said he wanted to serve Christ, but for ten years, and then he would think of starting another life This is dangerous! However provisional, but this is dangerous because one does not gamble one s life once and for all. I marry as long as love lasts; I will be a nun but for a short time, or for some time, and then I ll see; I will be a seminarian to become a priest, but I don t know how the story will end. This is not right with Jesus! I will not reproach you, I reproach this culture of the provisional, which beats us all, because it doesn t do us good: because a definitive choice today is very difficult. In my time it was easier, because the culture favored a definitive choice be it for matrimonial life, or the consecrated or priestly life. However, in this age a definitive choice isn t easy. We are victims of this culture of the provisional. His Holiness is absolutely correct. We live in a culture that is provisional, a culture that is based on the condition where people are encouraged not to make lasting commitments in their lives. It is dangerous to take a conditional or provisional approach to our faith. The New Evangelization begins with each of us making a strong commitment to live out our Catholic faith each and every day, to bring our Catholic faith to everyone we meet, to pass our Catholic faith to the next generation, to young families, and to the fallen away members of our Catholic. A critical need in every parish is the formation of all our people in the faith; formation that must touch our people s hearts and minds so that we can become aware of the great love that our heavenly Father has for each and every one of us, and so that, as we grow and mature throughout our lives, the Catholic faith becomes an integral part of who we are as human persons and informs every aspect of our lives as we endeavor to live a life of discipleship. Each and every one of us needs to be involved in this effort to evangelize our parish community and our families, to bring the lost sheep of our parish and of our families back to the faith; to give them reason to reengage their faith, to renew their relationship to the Lord, to reenter the and to begin practicing their faith once again. This effort of evangelization must, by necessity, begin with each one of us renewing our own commitment to live as disciples of our Lord Jesus who make this proclamation: The Kingdom of heaven is at hand by the very nature of how we live our lives and interact with the people we meet.

4 The Better Portion Although not one of the original twelve Apostles, St. Luke had a way of gaining information which the other three evangelists did not include in their gospels. For instance, the infancy narrative St. Luke wrote of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem giving far more intimate details about our Lord's birth. Today s reading, the meeting with Martha and Mary is contained only in the gospel of Saint Luke. Probably St. Luke learned of this by talking with Martha and Mary or other eye witnesses proving that he had received from many people personal information. Scripture scholars are in general agreement that Martha and Mary were the sisters of Lazuarus. It was Lazuarus that Jesus raised from the dead. Martha invited Jesus to her home including a number of our Lord's disciples as well. Martha was a hostess who went about the task of preparing the meal, while our Lord preached to those around Him including Martha's sister Mary. The law of Jewish hospitality dictated that Mary assist her sister Martha in the chores in the kitchen but instead Mary was so fascinated by the teaching of Christ that she sat at His feet listening to every word that He spoke. Martha would like to have listened to Christ but to her circumstances did not permit it; she had envy that got the best of her. When she complained to Jesus that her sister was not helping her, Jesus gave these words to Martha, "Mary has chosen the better part." Christ does not explain what the better part is. Many scripture scholars think Christ was referring to a life of prayer or contemplation, as being preferable to doing only work or other physical activities, in place of worshiping GOD. This tells us that preferring work, sports, or recreation in place of prayer and Holy Mass does not please our Lord. We must have a balance between prayer, work, and recreation. If we have this balance in our life, we have chosen the better part. Deacon Bill Bevan

St. Paul Parishioners Our annual parish picnic is planned for Saturday, August 24th following 4:00 pm Mass. Mark you calendars for that change in Mass time and plan to join in the fun and parish fellowship right here on our grounds after Mass from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. We will have musical variety for dinner and dancing, good food and beverages, games, crafts, and an obstacle course for the kids, Bingo for the family, a bake sale, and of course, the Giant Raffle drawing at the end of the evening. To encourage group purchases of Giant Raffle tickets, we will not have the smaller picnic raffle this year, so please help us defray the costs of the picnic by making a modest donation using the Picnic Patron envelopes in the pews.

7 RICA- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Process of Becoming Catholic We will begin interviews for those who wish to begin the Process Of becoming Catholic this Fall during the months of June, July and August. This process of conversion will begin after Labor Day. Classes will take place at 10:30 AM each Sunday. So many times we are like Martha, anxious and worried about many things ; we forget the most important thing - Jesus. When we put Jesus first and keep our eyes fixed on him then we are choosing the better part and our anxieties and worries seem to fade away. Be a Good Steward of Your Leisure Time The air in July seems to be filled with the music of birds and the hum of in- sects. We hear the happy sounds of picnickers, boaters, golfers, fireworks, kids splashing in the pool, and concerts in the park. It s a celebratory time, a time when many people take vacation or welcome visitors from afar or young adults home from college. We think of July as a fun time, a time for rest and relaxation, a time for leisure. It s important to be a good steward of the wonders of summer, a good steward of our time of rest and renewal, a good steward of leisure. A time to recharge our batteries is all part of leading a healthy, balanced life. After all, we recall that Jesus advised his disciples to... go off to a secluded place and rest (Mark 6:31). Being a Good Steward Always Martha and Mary are the focus of this weekend s Gospel, which abounds with rich themes about hospitality, service, and finding the right balance between action and prayerful attention to the Lord. Christians who are good stewards of their faith life realize that if they are too busy to enjoy peaceful, private time with the Lord, then something is out of balance in their spirituality. If we make time for Mass, but then carry on with our busy schedules without prayer, meditation and reflection, we are missing out. If we find ourselves anxious and harried by life s routines, could it be a sign that something in our spiritual life needs some serious attention?
