4 FROM FATHER JOHN: The one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, is not a God who is there in Heaven, unconcerned with us and our history, but he is the-god-who-comes. He is a Father who never stops thinking of us and, in the extreme respect of our freedom, desires to meet us and visit us; he wants to come, to dwell among us, to stay with us. His coming is motivated by the desire to free us from evil and death, from all that prevents our true happiness. God comes to save us. Pope Benedict VXI, First Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent (December 2, 2006) Today is the First Sunday of Advent. The Advent Season has a two-fold character to it. Advent is a time to prepare ourselves spiritually for the celebration of the Nativity of our Lord on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Advent is also a time to where we direct our hearts and mind to the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ at the end of time in preparation for Last Day. People in our society often confuse the Advent Season and the Christmas Season which begins on Christmas Eve with evening prayer and extends through the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord which will be celebrated on January 11 th. They really are two separate and distinct seasons with different characteristics. Christmas Season is a time to remember and celebrate the memorial of the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and the early manifestations of His Incarnation. The word Advent comes from the Latin word advenio which means to come to. The Advent Season begins the s liturgical year and consists of the four Sundays that proceed Christmas. Our liturgical celebrations and prayer focus on the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ at the end of time through the 16 th of December. The tone and character of our celebrations change on the 17 th of December as we re-focus our prayer directly on our preparation to celebrate the Lord s birth on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and throughout the Christmas Season. The Advent wreath is the most common symbol of Advent. Each piece of the Advent wreath symbolizes some part of our preparations of Jesus' birth on Christmas day. The circular shape symbolizes eternal life; the purple advent candles symbolize our waiting or repentance; the pink advent candle symbolizes our joy of Christmas; the light from the lit advent candles symbolize Jesus as The Light of the World. (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, I would like to encourage everyone in our parish to prayerfully enter into the Season of Advent; to prepare for both the Birth of our Lord Jesus and the Second Coming of our Lord at the end of time. There are many ways we can do this, individually, as a family and as a parish community. There is prayer. There is daily mass as well as Sunday mass. There is the opportunity to read scripture daily. The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops website has the daily mass readings available on the following web page: Reading the scriptures of the day and then meditating on them individually or as a family is a great way to enter into the season. There are countless opportunities to reach out and help the needy in our community. There is the reception of the sacraments particularly the Sacrament of Reconciliation which is offered every Saturday and will also be offered to our community on Monday, December 15 th. I am sure each of you can come up with one more way that we can take the opportunity to spiritually enter into the Season of Advent. I pray that this Advent Season is a season where each of us can take time out from the business of our secular lives and our secular preparations for Christmas to truly take advantage of the Advent Season to prepare ourselves spiritually for both Christmas and the Second Coming of our Lord. THANK YOU The Paulites We Have Much to Be Thankful For As We Begin Our Annual Fund This Month As we move from celebrating Thanksgiving into the season of Advent, we reflect on the things we are thankful for, and ponder with grateful hearts the mystery of the Incarnation..Just as Mary was filled with wonder and awe as she questioned, How can this be? we also wonder about the breadth and depth of God s love for us. Mary responded with unwavering faith in God s plan for her by saying yes: Let it be done to me according to His will. Since 1950, our parishioners have responded to the need to educate the next generation in the Faith by generously supporting our school. We are deeply grateful for that support, and ask that you prayerfully consider supporting our Annual Fund on December when you will have the opportunity to make a pledge to that effort. You will hear from our pastor and from lay speakers during the next two weeks as we present the Annual Fund to you.
