3 FROM FATHER JOHN: You cannot have God for your Father if you do not have the for your mother... God is one and Christ is one, and his is one; one is the faith, and one is the people cemented together by harmony into the strong unity of a body... If we are the heirs of Christ, let us abide in the peace of Christ; if we are the sons of God, let us be lovers of peace (St. Cyprian, Bishop and Martyr, The Unity of the Catholic ). I am writing this article on Monday, September 16, 2013 which happens to be the Feast day of St Cornelius, pope and St. Cyprian, bishop and martyrs. St. Cyprian always reminds me of how the and our Lord Jesus Christ are one; how the is the Mystical Body of Christ. Someone recently told me that they do not need the, that they do not need the mass, that they don t need priests or nuns or anyone else to be a good Christian. I was told that they can take a bible and go up on a mountain and pray all by themselves. The amazing thing is that this person thinks this way while at the same time thinking they are a good Christian. There is a video on YouTube called Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus, that went gone viral (meaning that thousands and thousands of people have watched it) about a year and a half ago. It reflects this kind of illogical and failed thinking. I watched the video to get a basic idea of what it s about. I found that it is full of myths, lies and untruths about religion, about faith, about the sacred scripture and about the church. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, wrote an excellent article in Catholic New York, (January 26, 2012) entitled Jesus and His Are One. It gets to the most basic reason why it is simply impossible to hate religion, which means hating the, while at the same time loving Jesus. Fr. Dusty Burns, a classmate of mine, has created a video called Why I Love Religion, And Love Jesus that rebuts the lies and myths that are in the other video. You can find his video at If you get a chance, take a look at Fr. Dusty s rebuttal it is quite good. Cardinal Dolan s article is below for your review. The simple point the Cardinal makes is that Jesus and the are one and, therefore, it s impossible to hate one of them and love the other. It s one of my favorite works of art: The Conversion of Saul by Caravaggio. There it is, meekly on display in the corner of the of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. Saul, the raging persecutor of the followers of Jesus, literally knocked off his high horse by the radiance of Jesus, the light of the world, transformed into a passionate apostle of Christ and His new, whom we now venerate as St. Paul. And what question does Jesus bellow out to the shocked Saul? Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Parse that very carefully. Saul, of course, has been harassing the, killing the followers of Jesus. Yet, note well: Jesus does not inquire, Why are you persecuting my or my people or my followers. No! The Lord asks, Why are you persecuting me? Get it? The Lord is saying, You hurt my, you hurt me. The and I are one. That epic lesson came up again yesterday, January 25, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. (By the way, today, January 26, is the feast of Paul s loyal disciple, St. Timothy just thought I d mention it!) Jesus Christ and His are one. Now, that s a revealed truth that needs repeating today. What we ve got now, if the scholarly research is accurate and I m afraid it is is a growing tendency to split Christ from His. More and more seem to be claiming such things as: Oh, I ve got faith. I just don t need the. Faith is great; religion stinks. I believe. I just don t want to belong. I got Jesus. Why bother with the? I pray how and when I want. What s the big deal about the Mass and on Sunday? St. Paul would take exception. So would Jesus. When God chose Israel he selected not a person but a people. Faith in God is communal by its very nature. Like our Jewish neighbors, we Catholics have always believed that God chooses us and gives us the supernatural gift of faith. It s not that we decide our faith. You bet, we freely decide how firmly and generously we will live out our faith, but we are born into a. Faith is a gift from God given us on the day of our baptism into His. Just like we re born into a natural family. We are a member of a human family. That family is often flawed and imperfect. In fact, there are times when we re angry at it and might even drift away from family events. But, family membership is in our blood. So it is with our spiritual family, the. Oh, we may get upset with her to be sure; we may even drift away from her. But, she never leaves us. The is in our supernatural DNA. Jonathan D. Fitzgerald, writing last week in the Wall Street Journal about the viral video Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus, concludes with this cogent thought: Stating that religions build churches at the expense of the poor turns a blind eye to the single greatest charitable institution on the planet. Blaming religion for wars ignores the fact that the greatest mass murderers in the 20th century indeed in all of history killed for nonreligious reasons. And advocating for a kind of Christianity that is free of the bondage of religion opens the door to dangerous theological anarchy that is all too common among young evangelicals and absolutely antithetical to biblical Christianity. Speaking of Jesus and His, the acclaimed French theologian Henri de Lubac exclaimed, For what would I ever know of Him without Her. Never give up on your family. Never give up on Jesus. Never quit His. For, as St. Paul learned the hard way, Jesus and His are one. St. Paul the Apostle, Pray for us; Mary Seat of Wisdom, Pray for us; St. John the Apostle, Pray for us

All are welcome to join in this beautiful celebration for our pets who are our extended family. We look forward to seeing you and your beloved pets. Bishop Vasa on Abortion LIFE "There are just choices and there are unjust choices. Choices would be the preference for chocolate ice cream over vanilla ice cream or sherbet instead of ice cream. That is just a choice. A just choice would be to choose to pay a fair and living wage to employees as opposed to simply meeting the mandatory standard of minimum wage laws. An unjust choice would be to choose to terminate the life of another human being. This is not just a choice and it is not a just choice; it is an unjust choice. Furthermore it is an unjust choice which is diametrically opposed to the clear and consistent teaching of the Catholic as well as to the clear and consistent teaching of God Himself in the Ten Commandments. The direct, intentional taking of the life of an innocent human being is inhumane and unjust. It is not just a choice! - Bishop Robert Vasa, March 1, 2007 The St. Paul the Apostle Boy Scout Troop # 15 will be selling their wonderful popcorn after each of the masses on the weekend of Sept. 28th & 29th. They will have several varieties of popcorn on hand and you may also order any additional amounts you choose. Please help the boys raise funds for their campout trip next summer. This Troop is also working on their Religious Badge established through the Diocese of Joliet. Thank you and enjoy your POPCORN!!!

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School News Once again, I have challenged every grade at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School to complete a very active service project that will benefit people locally, nationally, or internationally. Last year s projects included collecting items for birthday parties for kids living in local homeless shelters, collecting food for a local food pantry, organizing the St. Jude Children s Hospital Math-a-Thon, making cards throughout the year for parish members who are ill and confined to their homes, and collecting funds for Catholic Relief Services for people in need world-wide, to name a few. This year, I am asking for support for a very special project that is close to my own heart. My son Tim is in command of 100 soldiers who were deployed to Kuwait two weeks ago. Many of them are young and are experiencing their first deployment to a war zone. All of the unrest in the Middle East has added to their need for support from people back home. We will be sending packages to them with personal messages and treats that can withstand the desert heat. Tim will see that the items are distributed among the soldiers in his command. If you would like to contribute to the effort, drop off notes with words of encouragement at the school office or rectory any time, and we will include them in the next package. Please keep all of men and women in the military, and their spouses, in your daily prayers. -Mrs. Robbins R.E.P. NEWS In need of information about Our Religious Education Program?
