We gather to start a new week as part of the family of Christ: some of us have had happy news we want to celebrate, some of us have faced grief and need a place to cry. In this gathering, we celebrate our connections between and beyond: all of us seeking God s presence in our lives, all of us seeking God s presence in each other. 3 Reception of New Members Shelly Edwards, Jessica Kimmet First United Methodist Church is a welcoming, open community where there is always room for one more! Today it is our great pleasure to invite newcomers to officially join us. You have decided to join with this congregation of Portland s First Church, and to share with us a mindful spiritual journey. Just as early Christians were known as followers of The Way, we seek to be a faithful community moving through this life together. We ask you now these questions: To the New Members Will you join with us to follow the model of Jesus: to bring love and justice to all of God s creation; to love both the powerless and the powerful; and to seek to bring wholeness to all of humanity? I will. Will you join with us and with the United Methodist Church, to explore questions of Christian faith through the Wesleyan perspective, combining personal holiness and social justice? I will. Will you join with us in support of this community of faith through your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness, so that together we may grow stronger in expressing God s love for all creation? I will. To the Congregation Will you join with these persons - to learn from them and to learn with them, growing in the expression of our Christian faith, and affirming the presence of God s grace encompassing us all? We give thanks for you and we recognize you as our newest partners on the journey of faith. We will learn from you and learn with you. Together with you we will bring our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness to build up this community and to share God s love for all. Blessing May the God of all grace, who calls us into being with love, establish you now and continue to guide you on The Way of Jesus, the Way of God s love and hope. Amen. Take time to write a brief letter to your members of Congress seeking justice for the world s hungry people. All supplies, including sample letters, will be provided. Our Oregon Food Bank volunteer trip is at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning, May 17. A sign up sheet is available in Collins Hall during Coffee Hour. LOOKING AHEAD The EMO Annual Community Awards & Celebration Dinner will be May 14 at the Hilton Hotel. A silent auction starts at 5:00 PM and dinner at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at the church office. A Forum: Imagine No Malaria will be held Sunday, May 18, at noon in the Fireside Room. The Outreach Committees and the United Methodist Women co-sponsor this forum. Julia (Kayser) Frisbie is the Pacific Northwest s Imagine No Malaria field coordinator. She will share success stories, resources, and lots of time for questions about how close we are to eradicating this disease. A light lunch will be available. A Taize Service will be held Sunday, May 18, at 5:00 PM in the Chapel. Join us for this contemplative experience of prayer songs and chants in the chapel. We will be led by instrumentalists and singers in simple songs of worship. Scripture is read and reflected upon in silence. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES Christianity in a Changing World is an adult class studying: Evolution of God, by Robert Wright. Come join us for discussion even if you don t have the book! 9:00 AM/Room 202 The Gathering is a class for young adults and parents of children and youth.
