Hymn No. 111 How Can We Name a Love Sacrament of Baptism George Nee Spencer Introduction Brothers and sisters in Christ: through the Sacrament of Baptism we are initiated into Christ s holy church. We are incorporated into God s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this is God s gift, offered to us without price. It is our great pleasure this morning to welcome George Nee Spencer into this community through this Sacrament. To George and his parents: Do you turn from evil and desire forgiveness for whatever in your life separates you from communion with God, with others, and with yourself? I do.

3 Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist injustice and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves. I do. Do you claim Jesus as your guide, teacher, and savior? I do. Do you trust the Holy Spirit of God as the strength of your life, the one who empowers you to act with compassion and justice in the world? I do. To George: According to the grace given to you, will you serve as Christ s representative in the world, in union with God s church which is open to people of all ages, nations, races, and orientations? I will. To the congregation: As members of Christ s body, do you reaffirm your commitment to Christ, and your desire to live in loving relationship with God? We do. Will you nurture each other in the Christian faith and life and include George in your care? With God s help, we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround George with a community of love and forgiveness, that he may grow in his trust of God, be faithful in his service to others, and walk in the way that leads to life. Thanksgiving over the Water Pour out your Holy Spirit, to bless this gift of water and he who receives it. May it be a source of healing and forgiveness, a sign of your grace and love made visible in Jesus Christ. Amen. Blessing The Holy Spirit work within you, that being born through water and the Spirit, you may walk throughout your life in the way of Jesus Christ. 4 Receiving New Members First United Methodist Church is a welcoming, open community where there is always room for one more! Today it is our great pleasure to invite newcomers to officially join us. You have decided to join with this congregation of Portland s First Church, and to share with us a mindful spiritual journey. Just as early Christians were known as followers of The Way, we seek to be a faithful community moving through this life together. We ask you now these questions: Q: Will you join with us to follow the model of Jesus: to bring love and justice to all of God s creation; to love both the powerless and the powerful; and to seek to bring wholeness to all of humanity? A: I will. Q: Will you join with us and with the United Methodist Church, to explore questions of Christian faith through the Wesleyan perspective, combining personal holiness and social justice? A: I will. Q: Will you join with us in support of this community of faith through your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness, so that together we may grow stronger in expressing God s love for all creation? A: I will. To the Congregation Will you join with these persons - to learn from them and to learn with them, growing in the expression of our Christian faith, and affirming the presence of God s grace encompassing us all? A: We give thanks for you and we recognize you as our newest partners on the journey of faith. We will learn from you and learn with you. Together with you we will bring our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness to build up this community and to share God s love for all. Preview the Eastern Canada Tour today at noon in the Fireside Room. Join us for a preview of the First Church Travelers tour of Eastern Canada. Highlights include: McGill University and Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal, and the 1000 Islands between the US and Canada. LOOKING AHEAD A Newcomer Orientation will be held Sunday, September 21 at noon in Room 202. A light lunch will be served. The People s Climate March, will be on Sunday, September 21. Churches, faith groups, and grass roots organizations will gather at 2:45 PM at Tom McCall Waterfront Park for music and speakers, concluding with a march.
