For God so loves the world Let us so love God in our worship and our lives! Hymn No. 145 Morning Has Broken A Conversation with Our Children Prayer and all God s children said, Amen. Rev. Jeremy Smith
3 Receiving New Members Dan and Bev Halperin First United Methodist Church is a welcoming, open community where there is always room for one more! Today it is our great pleasure to invite newcomers to officially join us. You have decided to join with this congregation of Portland s First Church, and to share with us a mindful spiritual journey. Just as early Christians were known as followers of The Way, we seek to be a faithful community moving through this life together. We ask you now these questions: Q: Will you join with us to follow the model of Jesus: to bring love and justice to all of God s creation; to love both the powerless and the powerful; and to seek to bring wholeness to all of humanity? A: I will. Q: Will you join with us and with the United Methodist Church, to explore questions of Christian faith through the Wesleyan perspective, combining personal holiness and social justice? A: I will. Q: Will you join with us in support of this community of faith through your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness, so that together we may grow stronger in expressing God s love for all creation? A: I will. To the Congregation Will you join with these persons - to learn from them and to learn with them, growing in the expression of our Christian faith, and affirming the presence of God s grace encompassing us all? A: We give thanks for you and we recognize you as our newest partners on the journey of faith. We will learn from you and learn with you. Together with you we will bring our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness to build up this community and to share God s love for all. Blessing May the God of all grace, who calls us into being with love, establish you now and continue to guide you on The Way of Jesus, the Way of God s love and hope. Amen.
4 Congregational Prayers Allison Anderson, Lay Leader Holy One, we know there are plenty of tables that need overturning in our lives. Beneath a mask of respectability, we hide our fears, our doubts, our addictions and our sins. Beneath a façade of self-sufficiency, we know the longing for love, the hunger for peace, the pain of isolation. What a relief it would be to have you upset it all, scatter it all, and free us all. What a relief it would be to have you, Jesus, pay us a visit this very day And help us radically rearrange the furniture of our lives. Moment of Silence Pastor s Prayer and the Lord s Prayer Choral Response Rev. Dick Storment Anthem My Shepherd Will Supply My Need Virgil Thomson The Chancel Choir Erick Lichte, conductor Introducing the Scripture Scripture John 2:13-22 Rev. Ushers Chan Aaby, Judy Bomberger, Bob Fassiotto, David Edwards, Pete Klimecky, Greg Kirchem Greeters Coffee Hour The Chancel Choir and the Music Committee Lay Leaders Richard Allan, Allison Anderson, Paul Nickell Music Notes Introit Cantate Domino (Sing to the Lord a New Song) by Becki Slagle Mayo Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord all the earth. Cantate Domino. Worship the Lord with music, worship the Lord with song. Cantate Domino. Cantata Domino, sing unto God! Serve the Lord with gladness, serve the Lord with praise. Cantate Domino. Anthem My Shepherd Will Supply My Need arr. by V. Thomson My Shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his Name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back when I forsake his ways. He leads me for his mercy s sake in paths of truth and grace. When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay. One word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my table spread. My cup with blessings overflows, thine oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days, O may thy house be my abode and all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come, No more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home. Offertory Total Eclipse from Samson by George F. Handel Recitative O loss of sight, of thee I most complain! Oh, worse than beggary, old age, or chains! My very soul in real darkness dwells! Aria Total eclipse! No sun, no moon. All dark amidst the blaze of noon! Oh, glorious light, no cheering ray to glad my eyes with welcome day. Total eclipse! No sun, no moon. All dark amidst the blaze of noon! Why thus depriv d Thy prime decree? Sun, moon, and stars are dark to me!
