Open the graves of hate to a new morning: From Iraq and Darfur to Sudan to the very homes where we live, Open the graves of hate to a new morning of love! Open the graves of greed to a new morning: From Wall Street to Main Street to the wallets in our homes and the choices we make, Open the graves of greed to a new morning of conscience! Open the graves of violence to a new morning: In Jerusalem and Gaza, beat swords into plowshares in our church, in our homes and in our hearts, Open the graves of violence to a new morning of community and peace! Open the graves of exclusivity to a new morning: In the courthouse and the courts in our homes where we parent our children and raise our parents for a new world, Open the graves of exclusivity to a new morning when all means all! Open the graves of resignation and despair to a new morning: In dark places of schizophrenia... where change comes only with compromise and ever always too slowly, Open the graves of resignation and despair to a new morning of safety and great hope! 6 Photography Classes UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY First Church photographer, Larry Sawyer will be offering three sessions on Understanding Digital Photography. There will be an hour-long session on the following Sundays: April 15, May 6, and May 20 at noon in the Fireside Room. The workshop will cover the basics of digital photography and go all the way through editing your pictures in Photoshop. Bring your digital cameras and your questions. No cost or registration is required. Plan to attend and learn to have fun taking better photos with your digital camera. Dr. Christina Hulbe, PSU Professor of Geology and department chair, will be the guest present- standings of the impact of climate change... locally and globally. As the remote interior of west Antarctica, as well the projected implications of climate change for life on earth. A light lunch and nursery care will be provided, along with the opportunity to make a donation to cover cost. ECUMENICAL MINISTRIES OF OREGON ANNUAL DINNER will be on Tuesday May 8, 2012 at the Hilton Hotel, 921 SW 5th, Portland. Registration and a silent auction will begin at 5:00 PM. Trudy Kayser will present, Haiti and Palestine -- Nations in Crisis and will include a new video: Haiti--Perspectives on a Living History, prepared by Paul Jeffrey for the Schools of Christian Mission. Pat Brockman and Phyllis Leonard will share their VIM trip to Palestine experiences. Bring a brown bag lunch. Dessert and beverage will be provided. TABITHA CIRCLE The Tabitha Circle will meet April 11 at 1:00 PM in Room 202. Kay Ward will demonstrate using men s ties to make blouses, skirts, and purses. We will also work on receiving blankets for the UMCOR birthing kits which the VIM group will take to the Salt Lake City. TENTH ANNUAL QUILT SHOW & LUNCHEON The United Methodist Women will celebrate their 10th Anniversary Quilt Show and Luncheon with a display of quilts based on the book Memory Wall, by Anthony Doerr and a luncheon, Friday, April 27, 2012 in Collins Hall. The quilt preview begins at 11:30 AM, luncheon at 12:00 PM and program at 12:30 PM. Tickets are $20.00 with $15.00 designated for Mission Giving and will be available for purchase after church service in Collins Hall on Sunday April 15 and 22. Deadline for ticket purchase is April 24. The program will include a retrospective of past quilt shows plus the display of new quilts. Open the graves of hate to a new morning: From Iraq and Darfur to Sudan, from France to Florida, from the Phlippines to Oregon, from Portland to our congregation, to the very homes where we live Open the graves of hate to a new morning of love! Open the graves of greed to a new morning: From Wall Street to Main Street, from instruments of investment to instruments of interest, to instruments of deed and foreclosure; From the wallets of Washington to the wallets of Portland, from the wallets in our church to the wallets in our homes and the choices we make Open the graves of greed to a new morning of conscience! Open the graves of violence to a new morning: In Jerusalem and Gaza, beat swords into plowshares; in Afghanistan and Colombia bury the opium and cocaine and all the tools of addiction; On the campuses, in the supermarkets and banks and schools; in all places where the innocent are killed and maimed; empty the gun safes and missile silos and lay down the weapons in their place in our church, in our homes, and in our hearts Open the graves of violence to a new morning of community and peace! Open the graves of exclusivity to a new morning: In the courthouse and the courts where we debate who can be married; in mosque and cathedral and cloister and chapel, as we decide in doctrine and spoken word and worship who will get to heaven; In newspaper and textbook where we decide whose story is most worthy; In the boardrooms and backrooms and classrooms and emergency rooms where we decide who will thrive and who will languish; In the churches, to see if open doors really follow open heats and open minds, in our homes where we parent our children and raise our parents for a new world Open the graves of exclusivity to a new morning when all means all! Open the graves of resignation and despair to a new morning: In dark places of schizophrenia and the terrors of bipolar and depression, where suicide is contemplated and it never stops; In nursing homes and foster homes which house the worn out and the unwanted; in places of chronic disease, chronic unease, chronic what s the use?; In times of unemployment, under-employment and exploitive employment; in places of why do I even try? ; In places of legislation and regulation and contemplation and advocacy; In our out there and over there and in here, where change comes only with compromise and ever always too slowly Open the graves of resignation and despair to a new morning of safety and great hope!
