4 Martin Luther: Art and the Reformation October 30, January 15, 2017 Target Galleries Minneapolis Institute of Art rd Ave S, Minneapolis, MN Five hundred years ago, one man took a stand that shook Europe and changed the world. Now you can see the story of Martin Luther and the Reformation brought to life through astonishing artworks and historical objects, traveling outside Germany for the first time ever. Luther used art and the newly invented printing press to challenge Europe s leaders and spread a revolution of religious, cultural, and societal change. This exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, gold, textiles, and works on paper as well as Luther s personal possessions and recent archaeological finds that shed new light on an explosive era and the man who ignited it. For special talks see $20; $16 for Mia members; Free daily for Mia members at the Investor level and above. Free for all Mia members on the following Member Days: October 29 (Member Preview Day); November 8, 13, 17; December 6, 11, 15; January 8, 10. Organized in cooperation with the Minneapolis Institute of Art; Luther Memorials Foundation of Saxony- Anhalt, Wittenberg; Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin; Foundation Schloss Friedenstein Gotha; under the Leadership of the State Museum of Prehistory, Halle (Saale). Its realization has been made possible due to the support of the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany within the framework of the Luther Decade.
5 THE REFORMATION Out of the reformers struggles came a theology based on Scripture and a way of reading Scripture that shook medieval Christianity. The following phrases sum up the three principles at work in reformation Theology. SOLA SCRIPTURA By Scripture Alone means that Only God s Word our sure guide for faith and life, not any human teachings or traditions. SOLA GRATIA By Grace Alone means that only through God s undeserved love are we made righteous (perfectly holy before God for Christ s sake), not through any human decision or achievement. SOLA FIDE By Faith Alone means that only trust in God s promises, not our efforts, receives God s justification. His declaration that we are not guilty for Christ s sake. is PASTOR WILL BE ON VACATION FROM OCTOBER 1 THROUGH OCTOBER 24. He will be delivering the Sermon on October 25. 6 Veterans Day November 11, 2016 History of Veterans' Day The history of Veterans' Day dates back to the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect, bringing an end to World War I. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was proclaimed by President Wilson and commemorated United States' Veterans who served in World War I for the first time. In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized November 11 as the end of World War I and declared that day as the anniversary of the armistice. In the year 1954, Armistice Day officially became known as Veterans' Day and from then on, became a holiday honouring American veterans of all wars. In 1968 the Uniforms Holiday Bill made an attempt to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. The bill took effect in However, this caused a lot of confusion as many states disagreed with this decision and continued to commemorate Veterans' Day on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law which stated that Veterans Day would, again, be observed on November 11 from 1978 onwards. Veterans Day 2016 is still celebrated on November 11. REMEMBER TO BRING IN YOUR CANS! We are still collecting aluminum to support the Mission outreach ministry of Gloria Dei.
