2 Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family, and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus The Lord Freely Feeds and Provides for Us Those who contribute large sums from out of their abundance have done very little. They cannot purchase God s favor with their money. But the poor widow with her two small coins, who out of her poverty has put in everything she had, entrusts herself and her life to the mercy of God (Mark 12:41 44). Such faith is not disappointed, for the Lord is faithful, and He provides for His people by His grace. Thus was the poor widow of Zarephath able to feed the prophet Elijah for many days, as well as herself and her household, He feeds us, too, by His Word, not only with daily bread for this body and life, but unto the life everlasting in Christ Jesus. By the sacrifice of Himself, by the giving of His body and life and all that He had, He has entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf (Heb. 9:24 26). He is our great High Priest and the Temple of God, as well as the priestly food with which He feeds us. Children are welcome in worship! The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express the belief that Jesus is the Son of God and Son of Man; - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - that Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way; - that Christ's sacrificial death grants the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly; life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. She casts two mites into the treasury, because she brings the love of God and of her neighbor, or the gifts of faith and prayer; which are looked upon as mites in their own insignificance compared to God s grace. From Old Testament times right through to today the Lord has urged us to give to His work in the Church in proportion to how He has blessed us. He has also called us to sacrificial giving, that is, giving that actually costs us something. That s the shape of true Christian generosity. LUTHERANS FOR LIFE: November 11 God adopts. The Gospel is about adoption. Salvation s story can t be told apart from adoption. Christianity can t happen without it Pharaoh s daughter adopting Moses leads to the Hebrews ending up liberated Joseph adopting Jesus sets in motion sinners getting forgiven. Father Almighty offers His Son and adopts human beings for us to have a faith relationship with the Lord God and the hope of resurrection to everlasting life in His heavenly kingdom. 8 Operation Christmas Child Shoe boxes will be collected TODAY, November 11 th Thank you to everyone who took the time to put together shoe boxes. These shoe boxes will be distributed to a child overseas who may not otherwise receive a gift this Christmas season. TOGETHER IN MISSION At the Annual Voter s Meeting in November 2017, Gloria Dei voted to become a TOGETHER IN MISSION congregation. This partnership agreement means because of our desire to participate more directly and personally in God s mission of bringing the Good News of salvation to the very ends of the earth, we committed ourselves to support the mission endeavors of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod through LCMS Mission Advancement in partnership with Missionary Kayla Hoem while she is in Spain. Our agreement to support Missionary Kayla Hoem is the amount of $600 per year OR $150 per quarter, payable quarterly for one year. This also includes praying in private and weekly in public worship and to communicate with Missionary Kayla through letters, cards, and s. Fall street sweeping runs through November 20 Crews are sweeping streets across Minneapolis to completely clean the streets before winter, and keep leaves and debris out of the storm drains and ending up in our lakes and rivers. Minneapolis Public Works will run a curb-to-curb sweeping and leaf collection on 1,000 miles of streets throughout the city. Temporary No Parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance. Residents can visit minneapolismn.gov/streetsweeping to find out when the sweepers are coming through their neighborhoods. 9 A Caregiver / Loved One Support Group Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction introduction Tuesday, November 20, 3:00-4:30 pm East Side Neighborhood Services is hosting a Caregiver Support Group at Friendship Center, nd Street NE (across the street from ESNS) for anyone serving as a Care Partner for a loved one. This month, guest speaker Laura Saher will be presenting a 45 minute introduction to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) techniques including meditation and gentle mindful movement. MBSR is a specific program developed by the University of Massachusetts Medical Center over 20 years ago to help people actively engage in caring for themselves, to find greater balance, ease, peace of mind, and to cultivate well-being. 10 Catechesis Note for the Week What do Lutherans believe will happen when Christ returns? We believe exactly what the Holy Scriptures teaches. The following events will take place when Jesus returns: 1. Christ will come visibly and all people will see Him Acts 1:11; Matt. 24:27,30; Luke 17:22-24; 21:27,35 Mark 13:24-26; 14:62; Rev.1:7 2. Christ will come in glory surrounded by His angels Matt. 13:39-43, 49; 16:27; 24:30-31; 25:31; 2 Thess. 1:7 Rev. 19:11-14; Titus 2:13; Jude 14,21; 1 Pet. 4:13; Zech. 14:3 3. When Christ returns, a bodily resurrection of all the dead will take place. Believers will be raised to salvation and unbelievers to damnation Matt ,32; John 5:27-29; 6:39-40, 44, 54; Romans 8:11; Rev. 20:11-15; 1 Cor. 15:12-57; Dan. 12: All believers, both the dead and the living, will be caught up (a visible rapture) to meet the Lord in the air 1 Thess.4: Death will be destroyed 1 Cor. 15:26,54-57; Rev. 20:14 6. When Christ returns, a new heavens and a new earth will be created for all eternity Rev. 21:1; 2 Pet. 3:10-13 Nowhere, however, do the Scriptures teach that at His return Christ will establish a this-worldly, political kingdom, millennium or literal 1000 year reign of Christ 10

11 Today s Scripture Readings 1 KINGS 17:8-16: Elijah was directed for his own protection to a heathen region because of King Ahab s determination to kill him. The widow at Zarepath appears to have been a worshipper of the Lord God. Elijah s request for her last reserve of food was not motivated by selfishness so much as a test of his faith (and hers) that God would somehow make good his promise that the widow would be able to continue to feed him regardless of the famine. Miracles are not frequently mentioned throughout the Old Testament. They do appear at particular times in the history of the plan of salvation when the maintenance of a people who could hold and pass down its truths was endangered. HEBREWS 9:24-28: This reading repeats the substance of last week s second reading. The Old Testament priests needed to offer up sacrifices for the sins of the people again and again. This was a human act commanded by God in an edifice built with human hands. Christ needed only to make one sacrifice once, thus paying for all sin once and for all. He entered the true sanctuary of God s actual presence with a perfectly completed salvation. Otherwise his birth and death would have been needed repeatedly since Adam s fall into sin, for human sin is continuous! Because his salvation is an accomplished fact, he will come again at the end of all things to take to himself his perfected waiting people. MARK 12:38-44: Not all church officials who wear long robes and receive general approval are necessarily among God s elect. Hypocrisy can exist among the seemingly holy Christians. Beware! There is such a thing as greater condemnation. In sharp contrast to the scribes is the widow at the temple. The importance of money in God s kingdom is relative to what God does in blessing its use. Jesus comment about this widow s gift shows that whether great or small, it is the loving motivation of the heart towards God which determines the generosity of the gift. This widow was similar to the widow at Zarepath in the demonstration of a total and implicit faith. Next Week s Readings 26 th Sunday After Pentecost Daniel 12:1-3 Psalm 16 Hebrews 10:11-25 Mark 13:

12 God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way. Shield them from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor! May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! Amen. 12
