THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD Order of Worship January 13, :00 am Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod) 3014 McKinley St NE, Minneapolis, MN
Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family, and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus - Our Triune God Reveals Himself to Us in Holy Baptism The Baptism of our Lord is an Epiphany of the one true God in the flesh and blood of Jesus. He is the chosen Servant of the Lord, anointed with the Spirit for the rescue of God's people. In the waters of the Jordan, He takes His place with sinners as He undergoes the baptism of repentance in order to fulfill all righteousness for us (Matt. 3:15). We are baptized with a baptism like His, thereby dying and rising with Him, so that we will also live with Him (Rom.6:8). Indeed, all of us who are baptized into Christ Jesus are anointed with His Spirit and named by His Father as beloved and well-pleasing sons and daughters. Children are welcome in worship! If childcare is needed, an unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. Is there something you d like us to pray for today? Prayer Request cards are in each pew. Please hand your request to an usher before the service or during the offering. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express the belief that Jesus is the Son of God and Son of Man; - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - that Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way; - that Christ's sacrificial death grants the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly; life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine is denatured (alcohol removed) 2
The Baptism of our LORD AS WE GATHER Today we celebrate and remember the Baptism of Our Lord. As we live as baptized children of the Heavenly Father we see Jesus Christ set an example for us through His baptism, for through our baptism we receive the daily and eternal gifts of our gracious Lord. As we live as His baptized children, we are called to carry the good news of Jesus Christ to all the world. For God's gifts are for all---the Lord does not show favoritism. He is here for you today and He also wants to work through you! Pray that you are open to the Spirit's working within your heart and life. The SWOT Analysis will help us understand our Strengths and Weaknesses, and identify both the Opportunities and the Threats we face as a congregation. This analysis will provide a snapshot of our present values and ministries. It will also help to begin to formulate the expectations of a new pastor in whatever form this may lead GDLC. 5 TODAY S LUTHERAN HOUR January 13 "Reason to Believe" (John 1:19-51) Speaker: Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler Do you have a reason to believe that everyone should believe what you believe? John did. Come and see. NEXT WEEK ON THE LUTHERAN HOUR January 20 "My Delight is in Her" (Isaiah 62:1-5) Guest Speaker: Rev. Dr. Anthony (Tony) Cook As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, God rejoices over you. This week we explore our new name and identity as the bride of Christ. On Sunday mornings, listen on 830 AM WCCO AM at 6:05 am, or 1110 AM, Omaha, at 6:30 am, or XM 170 Satellite Radio on Sundays at noon or listen anytime at STEWARDSHIP: Jan. 13 (Baptism of Our Lord) Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened We know why the people where baptized, but why was Jesus baptized? He didn t need repentance or forgiveness. The answer is that He did it for us. The reason God sent His Son into the world is to fulfill all righteousness for us, to do what we could not do. The whole of Jesus life, everything He did and said was one great offering to the Father in our stead to fulfill all righteousness for us. With our righteousness fulfilled in Jesus and given to us in Baptism our hearts now overflow with thanksgiving and praise. LUTHERANS FOR LIFE: January 13 If God places such high value on life all life (John 3:16) how can we possibly be less concerned? We do love others because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). We speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8) because when we had no voice, no standing, no defense, Jesus stepped in on our behalf. There is no way we can be less loving. Christian Life Resources A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life TODAY is Fellowship Sunday Please plan to join us following service Hosted by Verlayne Sather and Lori Sharbono 5

Catechesis Note for the Week Why do we do Infant Baptism? Lutherans believe that the Bible teaches that a person is saved by God s grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ alone. And that it tells us that such faith comes by hearing (Rom 10:17). Jesus Himself commands Baptism and tells us that Baptism is water used together with the Word of God (Matt 28:19-20). Because of this, we believe that Baptism is one of the miraculous means of grace (another is God s Word as it is written or spoken), through which God creates and/or strengthens the gift of faith in a person s heart. Although we do not claim to understand fully how this happens, we believe that when an infant is baptized God creates faith in the heart of that infant. We believe this because the Bible says that infants can believe (Matt 18:6) and that new birth (regeneration) happens in Baptism (John 3:5-7; Titus 3:5-6). The infant s faith cannot yet, of course, be verbally expressed or articulated by the child, yet it is real and present all the same. The faith of the infant, like the faith of adults, also needs to be fed and nurtured by God s Word (Matt 28:18-20), or it will die. Lutherans do not believe that only those baptized as infants receive faith. Faith can also be created in a person's heart by the power of the Holy Spirit working through God's (written or spoken) Word. Baptism should then soon follow conversion for the purpose of confirming and strengthening faith in accordance with God's command and promise and a desire to do God s will. Depending on the situation, therefore, Lutherans baptize people of all ages from infancy to adulthood. The LCMS does not believe that Baptism is ABSOLUTELY necessary for salvation. All true believers in the Old Testament era were saved without baptism. Mark 16:16 implies that it is not the absence of Baptism that condemns a person but the absence of faith, and there are clearly other ways of coming to faith through the Word by the power of the Holy Spirit. Still, Baptism dare not be despised or willfully neglected, since it is explicitly commanded by God and has His precious promises attached to it. It is not a mere ritual or symbol, but a powerful means of grace by which God grants faith and the forgiveness of sins. 9
Today s Scripture Readings Isaiah 43:1-7: The prophet Isaiah speaks baptismal language. The Lord who created us is also the Lord who has redeemed us and called us by His name in our Baptism, so that the waters of divine judgment cannot destroy us. Romans 6:1-11: St. Paul carefully teaches us about the power and significance of Holy Baptism. It is not mere water. It is not a human act. Baptism through water and the Word is the very means by which the Lord incorporates us into His death and resurrection, so that all the benefits that Jesus earned for us in His death and resurrection, including the right to reckon ourselves righteous and dead to sin for Jesus sake is ours. Luke 3:15-22: The gift of the Holy Spirit is the promise of Holy Baptism. When the minister pours water upon the head of the baptismal candidate with his ordinary human hands, he, the congregation, and the baptismal candidate have the full assurance that Jesus shall give the Holy Spirit, as John also testified, I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Jesus is the source of the Holy Spirit in Baptism, who preserves us in the true faith. Jesus continues to pour out His Spirit upon us through the ongoing preaching of His Word. His Word of Law and Gospel is like the fire of heaven. It calls us to repentance. It bestows forgiveness. It purges the threshing floor and gathers the wheat into His barn. At the Baptism of Jesus, we see the supernatural realities of our own Baptism into Christ and we see Jesus as our substitute in whom the Father is well pleased. In His Baptism He aligns Himself fully with sinful humanity and is declared to be the righteous sin bearer, our Kinsmen Redeemer who will redeem us with His very blood. Next Week s Readings Sanctity of Life Sunday Isaiah 1: Thessalonians 5:14-48 Matthew 18: MCCL March for Life - January 22 Concordia University, St. Paul, will host a chapel service at 11:20 a.m. before the march. The march itself will be at Capitol Mall 13 Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, St Paul, MN from 12-1 p.m. 10
