1 Peace Lutheran Church FREMONT, INDIANA October Newsletter, 2014 POSITION WANTED I would like a job as tutor, teacher, and advisor to your family. I will never take a vacation. I will never be out of humor. I have no vices or bad habits. I won t borrow your clothes or raid your refrigerator. I will be up in the morning as early as anyone in the household, and will stay up as late as anyone wishes. I will help solve any problems you children might have. I will give you the satisfaction of knowing that no question your children ask will go unanswered. For that matter, I will answer any of your own questions on subjects that range from, How did we get here? to Where are we headed? I will help settle differences of opinion. I will give you information that will help you with your job, your family, and all your other interests. In short, I will give you the knowledge that will insure the continuous success of your family. As we celebrate the Reformation this month, let s make the commitment to be students of the Word and remember one of the great truths of the Reformation sola Scriptura We are saved by the promises in Scripture alone. You might be surprised at the multitude of blessings our congregation can enjoy if we are active in God s Word. Reread the position description above slowly and then look for guidance from God s Word. You won t be disappointed. God s blessings as we grow together in His grace.

Report from the Evangelism Team For the 4th year members of the Peace Evangelism Team have participated in Trine University s Orientation program. Several new students signed up for our promise of sending them s of encouragement. Three students were very interested in attending one of our 3 Worship services and several students picked up sets of Christian material. EVERYONE enjoyed the cookies! News from your Funeral Dinner Committee Serving on Peace Lutheran Church's funeral dinner committee are: Leslie Carr, Kay Bright, Fred Bright, Marion Hatcher, Linda Louth, Ann Clark, JoAnne Rowe, Robert Hostetler, Bonnie Handlin, Inge Hermann, and myself, Judy Hostetler. Kay and Fred Bright keep the kitchen stocked with coffee, cold drink mixes, paper products, food storage bags, and more. Please let these people know how much you appreciate their time spent serving on this committee. Providing funeral dinners has evolved over the past four years. In the past, dinners were an array of fifty or more dishes. We now have a set menu, which cuts down on time working at the church. Everyone, whether you are first or last to eat, gets a delicious meal with the same food choices. With the desserts being finger foods, such as cookies, brownies, and cupcakes, the clean up is quick, and any extras may be sent with the family or put in the freezer for future church use, such as Sunday fellowship time. In the past I phoned members for donated food items. More and more this is getting difficult. Members are busy people. Therefore, I can buy it and save the middle person step. However, if desired, anyone may still provide food. Please contact me, so that I may add you to the "call list". If you are not on the list, I will not call you. Last winter we had three funeral dinners during harsh winter weather. I just did not have the heart to ask people to venture out to bring one dish to the church. Therefore, I went shopping for all the items we needed for our menu. The team washed and cut up veggies and fruit, laid out cheese and cookie trays, and rolled ham for trays. Leslie made her fabulous cheesy potatoes. We also had a crock pot of green beans. We were able to feed a hundred people for about $1.25 per serving. It was much easier and the cost savings was amazing! Our team is asking that each church family consider donating for the funeral dinner fund or ask to have your name added to the "call list" for food items. 5 Preschool & Daycare Ministry at Peace Lutheran Church Nurturing Young Hearts for Christ OCTOBER 2014 THANK YOU! THANK YOU! The generosity of Peace members continues to be awesome! Because of you we are able to provide quality care and education for the children of our community, from infants to school-age children. We are also so thankful to have this wonderful facility and dedicated people who take care of it. Wee Creations is especially excited because our classes are full! It has been a busy month at Wee Creations! We began our school year with an Open House and Ice Cream Social. This evening was a great opportunity for the families to meet each other, meet our staff, and see our facility. The first day of preschool went smoothly. It was great fun to see how much the children have grown over the summer and to welcome new friends to our program. We have enjoyed getting back into our regular routines. We especially enjoy our visits with Pastor B. and Pastor Chad during Chapel. They are always so energetic! We also enjoy when Pastor Chad brings his guitar (and sometimes his boys) to sing and dance with us! The children look forward to seeing both Pastors each week. We think it is so wonderful that we have not one, but two Pastors who regularly express their love for our children and share God s Word with them too! We are very thankful to our Wee Creations Board members. They are a very important part of our ministry. We are currently searching for a few more board members to join our ranks. Please would you consider committing to one hour per month to serve? If you are interested, please see any board member or myself! Come and visit us anytime!! 6 WINGS News & Notes 2014 Fall LWML Zone Conference Saturday, October 11, 8:30 AM It will be held at Clear Lake Lutheran Church, Fremont. Registration begins at 8:30AM and includes a continental breakfast, worship service, Bible Study and lunch. Cost: $4.00 payable at the door. Please sign up at the information desk by Saturday, October 4. Contact Judy Scharpenberg with questions. TIME TO CLEAN OUT CLOSETS? We are collecting all sizes of new or slightly used coats, hats, scarves and mittens. A drop-off box is located in the coat closet. Mt. Zion Church will distribute them to those in need in Steuben County. Thank you. - Report from the Quilt-a-Thon: A huge Thank You to Pastor Chad and Ron Barkley for the set up of tables and chairs. They made for an efficient work day and enjoyable space to assemble the quilts. We are continuing to create more and should be sending quilts in October to Lutheran World Relief. WINGS OUTREACH The following supplies are being collected for the Seminary in Fort Wayne during October: Boxed dinners Hamburger Helper Tuna Helper Mac & Cheese The seminary has the ability to purchase products for much less that we can. So cash donations go much further for them. Also, they use gift cards from Walmart and Meijer. These cards may be purchased from our preschool thus helping BOTH the preschool AND the seminary. They especially appreciate gift cards during the holidays. All gift cards and cash donations should be put into envelopes and then into Judy Scharpenberg s church mailbox. Thank you.

7 Operation Christmas Child It is time to begin filling our shoe-boxes to participate in giving boys and girls around the world a chance to learn about God s greatest gift, His Son, Jesus. We are hoping everyone can help this mission work in some manner. Gift ideas: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, pens, pencils, crayons, writing pads, solar calculators, toothbrush, toothpaste, small soaps, comb, wash cloth, sunglasses, flashlights with extra batteries, ball caps, socks, t-shirts, toy jewelry, hair clips, watches Items to avoid: used items, war-related toys, guns, knives, etc. perishable food items, liquids (shampoo, bubble bath, lotion), medicine (vitamins, cough drops), anything breakable. Thursday Morning Bible Class continues each week this month. It is never too late to show up and join this enthusiastic group of men and women, leaning on the Word of God and listening for His guiding voice. Come join us at 9:30 AM! Please leave all donations in the Fellowship Hall on the designated table by Sunday, November 2nd. For more information, contact Donna Biddle ( ). Peace Lutheran will again be a regional drop-off site beginning November 17th. Volunteers are needed. 8 SAVE YOUR POP TABS The Land of Lakes Lion s Club is collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This is an on-going project so whenever you collect a cup or bag full, bring them in to church and put them in the five gallon bucket marked with the Lion s Club decal.
