2 Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus - -Easter, with its message of a living Lord, makes the difference of life both now and forever. As we journey through the Easter season we learn to trust in Him, believe in Him, walk with Him, and learn that He always walks with you no matter what the road, good or bad, that lies before you. We pray that as we continue to celebrate Christ s resurrection, through God s Word and all of worship, you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express the belief that Jesus is the Son of God and Son of Man, - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - That Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way - that Christ's sacrificial death grants the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine is denatured (alcohol removed). 2

This happens through the renewing work of His Spirit, transforming us by His Word. He calls us to love Him and others as He has first loved us! To be sure, loving others is not an easy task but it is a holy command. So, today we are encouraged to live out our new life in Him and to love one another! These items will be taken to Texas border missions and other places where new items are allowed. All sizes of undies and socks (for men, women, and children) are being collected, but children s socks (for age 3 to 6th grade) are very much needed, as children in Mexico cannot go to school without socks and shoes. 8 McKinley Street and 30 th Avenue STREET REPAIR ASSESSMENTS: The City of Minneapolis will be repairing some of the streets within the Waite Park neighborhood this summer. This project will affect both McKinley and 30th Ave. Some utility work will begin this spring with the street repairs taking place this summer. We will continue to update you as more specifics are received. Additional project info can be found: Our assessment for this project is $18, While our church is tax exempt, we still pay several hundred dollars in other assessments each year. The first year street assessment will be approximately $4, (includes 3.9% interest) divided equally between our May 2018 and October 2018 payments. We have a little over a year before our first payment will be due and 1 1/2 years for the second portion. Whatever we can save will help reduce what will have to come out of our general fund. We have set up a "Street Repair" account to start saving for these costs. If you would like to contribute to this fund, you can use a Special Offering Envelope or a plain envelope and mark it STREET REPAIR along with your name (and number) on the envelope. 9 Catechesis Note for the Week Is Jesus the only way to heaven?" Yes, Jesus is the only way to heaven. Such an exclusive statement may grate on the postmodern ear, but it is true nonetheless. The Bible teaches that there is no other way to salvation than through Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself says in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. He is not a way, as in one of many; He is the way, as in the one and only. No one, regardless of reputation, achievement, special knowledge, or personal holiness, can come to God the Father except through Jesus. Jesus spoke of Himself as the only way to heaven in several places beside John 14:6. He presented Himself as the object of faith in Matt 7: He said His words are life (John 6:63). He promised that those who believe in Him will have eternal life (John 3:14 15). He is the gate of the sheep (John 10:7); the bread of life (John 6:35); and the resurrection (John 11:25). No one else can rightly claim those titles. The apostles preaching focused on the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Peter, speaking in the Temple, clearly proclaimed Jesus as the only way to heaven: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Paul, speaking to the synagogue in Antioch, singled out Jesus as the Savior: I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin (Acts 13:38 39). John specifies the name of Christ as the basis of our forgiveness: I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of His name (1 John 2:12). No one but Jesus can forgive sin. Eternal life in heaven is made possible only through Christ. Jesus prayed, Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent (John 17:3). To receive God s free gift of salvation, we must look to Jesus and Jesus alone. We must trust in Jesus death on the cross as our payment for sin and in His resurrection. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe (Romans 3:22). 9

10 Today s Scripture Readings Acts 2:14a, 36-41: The Apostle Peter s sermon on Pentecost clearly proclaimed the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for salvation and called his listeners to faith in Christ. After his sermon he directed them to repent of their sin and be baptized for forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promises of Holy Baptism are extended to every sinner who is a far off from God, adults and children alike. Entry into the kingdom of God is freely given to all who repent and believe the message of forgiveness. The faithful preaching of the Gospel culminated in over 3,000 souls becoming Christians through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. 1 Peter 1:17-25: Having spoken about the wonderful teaching of free salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, Peter goes on to enumerate reasons for building a life of obedient holiness on that foundation For we were not redeemed with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, and we were born again by the incorruptible seed of the Word of God. Because of this we live lives that are purified and sanctified in Christ that we might live in sincere love of the brethren loving one another fervently with a pure heart. In this way, Christians honor their Redeemer and confess the riches of His grace in their lives. Luke 24:13-35: Two disciples of Jesus walked from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus on Resurrection Sunday afternoon. When they started their journey they knew that Jesus had been crucified, but they did not yet believe in the resurrection, even though there were reports that He had risen from the dead. The resurrected Lord Jesus joined them on that road and walked with them to Emmaus, but He prevented them from recognizing Him so that He might bring them to faith in the resurrection by opening up the Old Testament Scriptures to them. Beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded on that it was necessary according to the Scriptures that the Christ suffer for sins and rise from the dead. Jesus catechesis of these disciples led them to finally see Him in the breaking of the bread. So it is for us, faithful preaching and teaching of God s Word is the only way we will truly see Jesus and come to faith in Him.
