1 Rev. Zachary M. DeArmond Senior Pastor Rev. Scott Hirssig Associate Pastor 1712 Menasha Ave., Manitowoc, WI Phone: Newsletter November 2018 O give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His love endures forever (Psalm 136:1). The love of the Lord does endure forever because the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, is risen from the dead, lives and reigns for all eternity. He was crucified for our transgressions, but He is raised and lives forever for our justification. We are acceptable to God in Christ Jesus. This is indeed something for which we give thanks. We give thanks in our prayers. We give thanks in the hymns we sing in church. We give thanks by talking about it with our friends and neighbors and teaching it to our children and grandchildren. And we give thanks by giving to of ourselves, because our loving God has chosen us to be his children and die on the cross for each and every one of our failings to love God and love one another. God himself has chosen us. We are the fruits of his creation and he has and will call us unto himself. We are blessed and give thanks because we know that we have a God who takes care of us and nurtures us. This isn t something cling to during the dark days of winter or the dark days of our lives, but rather daily and continually with unyielding thanksgiving. Even so, Lord, quickly come To Thy final harvest home; Gather Thou Thy people in, Flee from sorrow, free from sin, There, forever purified, In Thy garner to abide: Come with all Thine angels, come, Raise the glorious harvest home. Come, Ye Thankful People, Come LSB 892 v.4 THANKSGIVING OFFERING ENVELOPES will be donated to Redeemer Preschool. You may place your envelope in the offering anytime during November.

There was also been historic flooding right here in Wisconsin. These treacherous weather events have changed the lives of millions of people and also damaged and/or destroyed a few LCMS churches, the homes of congregational members, and the homes of pastors including that of former Redeemer youth director, Rev. David Gieseking. If you would like to support the relief efforts in a financial way LCMS World Relief and Human Care is nationally recognized as one of the best places to direct your funds. Contributions for LCMS World Relief and Human Care disaster response efforts can be made online at lcms.org/givenow/disaster or by sending the text message LCMSHURRICANES to the number Donate over the telephone by calling Follow the stories and learn more online at lcms.org/disaster. Lois Vohen The Court 1903 Division Street Manitowoc, WI Birthday: December 27 Lois has been a member of Redeemer for many years. However, she no longer attends services, as she has no transportation. Her sons attended Sunday school when they were young. Lois was born in Morrison, just south of De Pere, attended school at Morrison Lutheran and graduated from East De Pere High School. She moved to Manitowoc when she was about 22 and worked at Aluminum Specialty until she warried Lester Weichart. Then it was time to work on the farm with her husband in the Two Rivers area. Two sons, Daniel and Brian, were born during this time. Daniel now lives in Arizona and Brian now lives in Brown Deer. Her husband passed away when the boys were teenagers, which made life difficult, so the family moved to Two Rivers. Later, after the boys were grown, Lois married Mayard Vohen. Since then, he too has passed away. Lois moved to Felician Village a few years ago but recently moved to The Court on Division Street. Her sons felt she needed extra care. Lois activities are limited as she has blind spots with vision. She does enjoy the newer activity of coloring books, but she always welcomes company, as her days get lonely.
4 Youth Stock Thank you to everyone who has invested in our youth so far and Youth Stock will remain available for purchase as we continue to plan for the National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis next summer. On the wall separating the Narthex and the Fellowship Hall you will find envelopes with numbers on them. Simply take an envelope(s) off the wall, fill out the information in the envelope(s), and put the corresponding dollar amount in the envelope. You can return the sealed envelope by putting it in the offering plate, returning it to the office, or giving it to Pastor DeArmond. By next summer you will have a guaranteed return on investment! These are what the current projections look like: For those who invest $1.00-$50.00 you will receive a postcard, from Minneapolis, updating you on the Youth Gathering! For those invest $51.00 or more you will receive a postcard updating you on the Youth Gathering AND you will be invited to a special Shareholders Brunch sometime after our youth return from Minneapolis, where you will receive a full report about what took place in Minneapolis! Meet our youth and chaperones who will be attending: Michael Paltzer, 15, Lincoln High School I am looking forward to seeing thousands of teens from across the nation. Having fun and talking with others that share your beliefs is hard to come by in day to day life so this is a good opportunity to meet new people. Shalyn Behnke, 16, Two Rivers High School I am excited to attend the National Youth Gathering because it is a fun way to share my faith with other people my age. Kendal Behnke, 14, Two Rivers High School I am excited to attend the National Youth Gathering because my sister said it was really fun when she went. Naomii Etheridge, 13, Wilson Junior High School I can t wait to learn more about Christ and see all the other 30,000 other kids that are there to do the same! Makhi Etheridge, 15, Wilson Junior High School It is going to be a cool opportunity to share my faith with others my age. I m also looking forward to getting to know other youth from my church more!
5 Evan Stoker, 14, Mishicot Middle School I am looking forward to the National Youth Gathering, because I get to go to a state I have never been to, and experience new things. Connor Hafeman, 18, Lincoln High School I had so much fun the last time I went, it was the first time I had ever gone to such a large city with so many people. It was so cool to see so many people gathered in one place for one reason only. It's amazing to see that there are so many Christians gathered in one place that are my age. It's nice to see that our church is not alone, but there are so many others out there. Brooke Korlesky, 13, Wilson Junior High School I am looking forward to this trip because of all the cool tourist activities we get to do when we go. Also I can't wait to see what this trip is all about. My parents never did anything like this, so I can't wait to see it. I can't wait for the next one also because my cousin will get to go. Amanda Korlesky, 14, Wilson Junior High School I am looking forward to this trip because it is something new that I have never done before. Also I can't wait to see what it is like. Chaperones: Kari Stoker, Aurora Health Center, Internal Medicine I went to the National Youth Gathering in 1992, in New Orleans. My friends and I had a wonderful time. We saw new places as we traveled, and at the gathering. I can't wait to experience the week of worship and traveling with my son and the other youth of our congregation. Courtney DeArmond, Associate Principal, Wilson Junior High School I am looking forward to attending the National Youth Gathering to worship alongside our congregational youth and helping them to grow in their faith. Pastor DeArmond, Senior Pastor, Redeemer Lutheran Church I enjoy the eye opening experience of the National Youth Gathering for our youth, as they see that they are part of something that is so much bigger than just our congregation. Youth Gathering Pizza Ranch Fundraiser The youth and chaperones who will be attending the 2019 LCMS National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis will be hosting a fundraiser at Pizza Ranch, 3212 Calumet Ave., on Monday, November 26 th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Ten percent of all sales during that time and tips will go directly to the support those attending the Youth Gathering. We look forward to seeing you and bon appetite!

Please sign up at the Welcome Center by October 28 th. Cost is $30/person. We need 10 people minimum and 30 people maximum. Contact Madri Gregurich if you have questions. Jefferson Elementary School Weekend Meals for Kids Join in Redeemer s continuing local mission outreach to provide weekend meals for kids who attend Jefferson elementary school in Manitowoc, who very likely would have little to nothing to eat over the weekends. Over 85% of the children at Jefferson school receive free or reduced price lunches during the week, meaning that they are in definite need during each weekend. Help us to reach a goal of providing $3600 worth of weekend meals for the school year to our local elementary school students. The Redeemer Mission Board has already pledged half of this support, so help us to reach this goal by the end of the year. We have already started providing these weekend meals to fifty (50) elementary school children every other Friday, starting on October 12, Hopefully, we can start providing these meals every Friday, if and when the goal is met, during the rest of the school year, so that the children will be nourished and ready to learn when they return to class the next Monday. The expected cost for each weekend meal bag is about $2.50, and the food in each bag consists of items such as the following: Breakfast bar Applesauce Chicken noodle soup Macaroni & cheese microwavable Breakfast cereal (2) e.g., Instant Oatmeal Crackers with cheese (2) Crackers with dip To see our progress in reaching the goal, please visit the display at the Welcome Center. While there, you can also pick up dedicated donation envelopes to help you in making a difference for our community s children. You can place your dedicated donations in the offering plate any Sunday, or in the wooden box at the Welcome Center. (Any checks should be made to Redeemer, noted for Weekend Meals for Kids.) During the last school year ( ), the Mission Board and our congregation provided weekend meals for eight months, which were very well received by both the school s staff and students. One 1 st grade student commented to the principal, Friday is my favorite day of the week because that is the day we get food to take home! Another student called the staff, who delivered the meals to the backpacks, the Food Fairy with a huge smile. Also, many hand written notes were received from the students thanking us for providing the weekend meals. As you can see, this outreach does make a difference in these children s lives. Help us to continue to feed those children who are in need. Redeemer s Mission Board
7 Operation Christmas Child 2018 The Power of a Simple Gift Redeemer will again be partnering in the 2018 Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry, which is part of Samaritan s Purse international Christian outreach, headed by Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham. Operation Christmas Child (OCC) provides small gifts for impoverished children, worldwide, all in a small shoe box, around the time of Christmas. Each box is designated for a boy or girl in age categories 2-4 years, 5-9 years, and years. Gifts are especially needed for the older children, since OCC receives the least of these. The gifts consist of the following categories: Hygiene items such as soap (Ivory is best, because it floats), a washcloth, comb or brush, and toothbrush. Please, NO toothpaste again for 2018 due to customs and shipping restrictions. School supplies including pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, scissors, small tablets, colored pencils, crayons, markers, watercolor paints, rulers, coloring and picture books, and solar calculators. Toys such as small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, soccer ball (deflated) with air pump, kazoos, harmonicas, recorders, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky, etc. (Please, no war related items.) Other items like T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, and flashlights (with extra batteries). A personal note may be enclosed to the child and a photo of yourself or your family (with your name and address so that the child may possibly write back). Please DO NOT include toothpaste; used or damaged items; war related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; seeds, candy, chocolate, gum or food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes, glass containers or china dolls; or aerosol cans. Again for 2018, NO candy or toothpaste will be accepted due to customs and shipping restrictions. To assist with transportation, a $9 per box donation is requested. And a rubber band around each box will ensure that all the contents remain within the box. Pre-printed OCC boxes will be available at the Welcome Center this year for your use, until we run out. Any regular shoebox may be used; and if you choose to wrap your box with holiday paper make sure to wrap the lid and bottom separately. If you are unable to pack a shoebox but want to help, we are accepting shipping donations at the display located at the Welcome Center. Remember it costs $9 per box to send these gifts worldwide. Samaritan s Purse recommends you use the Follow Your Box tool (through samaritanspurse.org/occ) to give your shipping donation online. This will also provide you with a pre-printed tracking label to let you know to which country your box was delivered. Samaritan s Purse will add the Gospel message to each box, in the child s native language, through both a printed and 10-minute oral presentation before they receive their box. So, it is extremely important that you pray for the child who will receive your gift. Many children will get only your shoebox gift at this time of the year, and many will only be learning about Jesus for the first time. To help Redeemer families and individuals get involved, we ve planned the following events: Sunday/Monday, Oct. 21/22 we will hold a kick-off for OCC collections with a video explaining the outreach program. Sunday Nov. 11 Sunday, Nov. 18 Redeemer collection week; so bring in your packed shoebox gifts, in preparation for dedication. Sunday, Nov. 18 Dedication Sunday, where the shoebox gifts will be dedicated to the glory of Jesus Christ, and then delivered to the local collection site. Look for more details in the upcoming weekly bulletins. Everyone is encouraged to help or assist in any way with this outreach project. For further information please contact Debbie Hennig at
