2 Welcome to God s house today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family and if we can be of any help to you please call the pastor or speak with him after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register or the visitor s card in the pew. We pray that as we continue to celebrate Christ s resurrection, through God s Word and all of worship, you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s focus Today is Sanctity of Life Sunday. We affirm that God loves, nurtures, sustains, and designs all life. In the beginning, God bestowed upon man the breath of life. In spite of God s unrivaled lifegift, man rebelled and the death-consequence cursed life. Even in the midst of these seemingly insurmountable repercussions, God redeems humankind and perpetuates eternal life. His Word makes this clear. His love makes this clear. Vulnerable lives are of extraordinary worth--- including the foreigner, the widow, the orphan, and the unborn, the aged. God loves all His children and rejoices in their life! Is there something you d like us to pray for today? There are yellow Prayer Request cards in the hymnal racks in each pew. Please hand your request to an usher before the service or hand it to them during the offering. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord and one another: - we express a common faith that Jesus is Son of God and Son of Man - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - That Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way - that Christ's sacrificial death assures us of the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. - We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and practice. Those who share these convictions are welcome to come and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine in the center is denatured (alcohol removed) wine. 2

3 AS WE GATHER This Little Gospel Light of Mine is more than a cute children s song! It s what we are called to be and do! Paul says we are holding fast to the word of life (Philippians 2:16) we are to also hold it out and shine as lights in the world. The word of life is the Good News of Jesus Christ who came into this dark world of sin as the light of salvation. And the Good News of Jesus Christ is more than nice sounding words. It s Good News that speaks to us in our everyday lives. YEAR END GIVING STATEMENTS ARE IN YOUR BOX THE SAINT JOHN S BIBLE Heritage Edition August 2014 July 2015 Building on Concordia University, St. Paul s theme of the year, The Word Made Flesh, CSP will host two volumes of The Saint John s Bible Heritage Edition throughout the entire academic year. The first commissioned handwritten Bible since the 15 th century, these volumes are available for public viewing in the Library Technology Center. During the month of February, all seven volumes will be on campus. In addition, on Mondays in the Graebner Memorial Chapel from 10:30 to 10:50 am, speakers will reflect on selected illuminations from The Saint John s Bible. LUTHERANS FOR LIFE Roe is a radical decision and a legally indefensible one. But what really makes Roe unbearably wrong is its consequences. The result of Roe and Doe has been the legally authorized killing of nearly sixty million Americans since Roe v. Wade authorized unrestricted private violence against human life on an almost unimaginable scale, and did so, falsely, in the name of the Constitution. To repent means to turn away from sins and our former way of thinking and turn toward belief in God and His Gospel of grace and mercy. 7 Today s Scripture Readings Jonah 3:1-5, 10 The prophet Jonah did not want to heed the Lord s call to preach to the people of Nineveh. At the first he fled from the Lord s call, but the Lord intervened. Jonah was hurled into the sea, swallowed by the great fish, and vomited up on dry land to do the original work to which God had called him: to preach to the Ninevites. The Ninevites heard the call to repentance and was brought to faith. The Lord s ministers are often reluctant and full of weakness, but the Lord s all-sufficient Word is their strength. 1 Corinthians 7:29-35 Paul s exhortation is particularly directed to ministers of the Word who are called to understand the enormous responsibility of their office and how it demands faithfulness and fulltime dedication to the Lord. Mark 1:14-20 Simon, Andrew, James, and John were all called to repentance and faith in Jesus and were baptized by John the Baptist at the Jordan River. Like all Christians, they continued in their vocation as fishermen. It was their life s work. But sometime after their Baptism, Jesus called them out of their earthly station as fishermen to be fishers of men ministers of the Gospel. The Office of the Holy Ministry was clearly established by Christ and given to His Church that through the ministry of Word and Sacrament the salvation of the Lord might be extended to all people. Throughout the remaining years of Jesus ministry, the Apostles in training would learn by personal experience the utter futility of self-reliance. They would be completely dependent upon the Lord s Word and His gifts in the ministration of their office. If they relied upon themselves, their own spiritual strength and wisdom, they would fail. This was shown to them in the miracle of the catch of fish itself. They were expert fishermen, but in this instance all their expertise counted for nothing. At the Lord s Word alone they let down their nets and at the Lord s Word alone a catch of fish was brought up from the deep that was unable to be contained by the net of human strength. Christ s ministry rests upon the power, strength, and sufficiency of the Word of Christ alone. 8

8 Catechesis Note for the Week The Sacrament of Holy Baptism Believe it or not, there are a number of Christian denominations that believe that Jesus did not die for everyone but only for certain people. For example, some teach that He only died for the elect, those predestined to salvation. Not true! Some teach that He only died for those who would come to faith in Him. Not true! The words of John after Jesus baptism make it clear that He died for the sins of the whole world. This is an enormous source of comfort because it means that God really does love everyone, even though many reject Him. In this week s Gospel Jesus extends the call into the ministry to four men who had become His disciples through the ministry of John the Baptist. Like all of us, after their baptism they returned to their vocation as fishermen in the town of Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee. When Jesus said, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men He was calling them to leave their vocation and enter into the Office of the Apostolic Ministry in which they would no longer fish in the way they had, but would now fish for men through the preaching of the Gospel. We are all called to bear witness to our Lord in whatever vocation God has given us, but there is the office of the Holy Ministry in which men are called to full time service in the preaching of the Gospel and administration of the Sacraments. The Church includes both the witness of laymen in their earthly callings and the witness of her ministers in fulltime service to the Church and the world. 9
