2 How should a Christian think about death? We ve all heard the quip that things come in threes This seems to happens quite often when it comes to death and funerals. I sit here today, knowing yesterday was the funeral of the former pastor s wife of the congregation Diane and I were members of before we came to Gloria Dei. Today, Wade Billmeyer s mother s memorial service will be in Afton. Tomorrow, I have been asked to be part of Rev Jan Pavel s funeral in Robbinsdale. He was my Greek professor at Concordia College (now, University) in St. Paul who avidly checked my use of Greek in my newsletter articles and lead worship here in my absence on several occasions. Needless to say, this week has begun on a different note than usual. This has led me to consider that when a person comes face to face with their own mortality, there are generally two different reactions; either, I don't want to die! or I'm ready for death! These are two totally different reactions to death. While you might be thinking, one is a Christian response and the other is not. You might be surprised with the answer: Actually both are true and are Christian responses. Christians fight against death and treasure life, while at the same time they look forward to death as a gift from God. This might seem strange. Can you imagine a stranger to Christianity looking through the stained-glass windows, trying to figure us out. Do they hate death? Do they like death? Who can understand these Christians! It might be confusing at first, but the more we consider the Scriptures, the more it makes sense. First, we know that death is our great enemy. In the very beginning, God told Adam that if he disobeyed and ate the forbidden fruit, he would die (Genesis 2:17). Death is the punishment for sin (Romans 6:23). If there were no sin then there would be no death, only life forever and ever. Death is not part of God's original plan; it's not the way things are supposed to be. Death, then, is our enemy as Paul says, The last enemy to be destroyed is death (1 Corinthians 15:26. We are not supposed to like it or accept it. After all, when Jesus Himself hears that His friend Lazarus has died, He weeps. When a parent comes to Jesus begging for Him to raise their child, Jesus doesn't say, Oh, don't worry about that; death isn't that bad. Just accept it. No, Jesus raises them from the dead. Hours before His own death, our Lord prays in the Garden of Gethsemane that the cup of death and God's wrath would pass from Him. Jesus doesn't like death, and He came to overthrow death and destroy it once for all. That is exactly what the Lord Jesus has done. On the third day Jesus rose from the dead; He overcame death; He destroys the grave. On the cross Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for all of our sins; He dies in our place. The death He dies is our death, so that the life that He lives can be our life, eternal life. And this changes things. St Paul says that the sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law (1 Cor 15:56). This means that death brings sinners to eternal condemnation, but when Jesus was condemned in our place, our sins were forgiven and death lost it s sting, it s strength, and it s terror (1 Cor 15:54-57). And now, because death has been destroyed (Hebrews 2:14) through the death of Jesus, we can rejoice in death as a gift from God. Paul says this very thing in his letter to the Philippians, For me, to live is Christ; to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21). Death is our defeated enemy, our hated friend. We fight against death, but when our last hour comes, we welcome it like an old friend, for we know that to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). We can lay down and sleep in peace because the grave, for us, is the door to eternal life. (continued on the next page) 2

3 (Pastor s page continued) This is why the Scriptures give such sweet names to death (what the old theologians called The Sweet Names of Death ). Consider some of the following and the comfort they bring to us in the valley of the shadow of death. Depart and be with Christ I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart (Philippians 1:23) and be with Christ, for that is far better. Departure in peace Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, (Luke 2:29) according to your word. Taken from evil The righteous man perishes, and no one lays it to heart; (Isaiah 57:1) devout men are taken away, while no one understands. For the righteous man is taken away from calamity [evil]. Passing from death to life Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My word (John 5:24) and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. Gain For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21) Because Jesus died for us, we live and die to Him. While we live, we rejoice in His gifts of life and salvation, and when we die we rejoice in His presence forever. This is how a Christian is to rightly think about death. May God grant it to us. Amen. MARRIED COUPLES - GIVE A GIFT FROM YOUR HEART when you and your husband/wife attend a Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekend! Because the Master Greeter has made the effort to meet new people and remember their name, it makes them feel significant and want to return there for church. When they do return and he greets them by name, they are even more impressed. They feel they have a place of importance and belonging in this congregation. They have a special friend at this church. They want to return and bring their friends to experience this same feeling they have found here. 5

6 Dear Church Family, March 2013 What have you heard? Our campus has recently begun a health endeavor called Fit to Pedal. It is designed to strengthen our endurance, help us with balance, etc. Our Thelma showed up answering a reminder call. She felt she had signed up for a manicure at that time so was a bit surprised to find herself in the travel mode. She did mighty well at something she had not heard. What have you heard? On Ash Wednesday, some of us from the old school of Lutherans, both at the noon and at the evening service, were a bit hesitant or too hesitant to go up for ashes. What had we heard? Were the parental words of yesteryear where they felt that procedure was for a limited denomination creeping upon us? (Editor s note: or a Biblical practice that reminds us all who we are) What have you heard? Do we remember back far enough to being a Swedish Lutheran, or a German Lutheran and parents hoping their offspring would not get involved in a mixed marriage. What have you heard? Do you remember as a child, maybe with a cousin in tow, listening over a floor register to our mom s gossiping? What have you heard? Who among us is old enough to remember rubbering in on a party line phone, without sneezing that might be heard, to pick up the latest in news? What have you heard? How many of us heard on Ash Wednesday, that it is not our Pastor s favorite day for sermon preparation and how many of us were touched by the reasons why. What have you heard? Our campus has many who do not hear well at all. Does not that behoove those who do to speak out to them in love so that they might feel our love in the sermon we preach with patience, understanding and a happy face? To God be the glory! WE ARE TRULY BLESSED, OR HAD YOU HEARD? Always Better the Second Time Around C.S Lewis once said, No book is really worth reading at the age of ten that is not equally - and often far more worth reading as the age of 50 and beyond. What a joy and blessed experience it was for me to recently re-read Luther s Small Catechism and the questions and answers that follow it. I read it as a 60-plus seeker of wisdom who enjoys spiritually edifying reading material. In other words, I read it as a devotional similar to the Portals of Prayer daily readings. I invite you, my brothers and sisters in Christ to do the same. The purpose is not to be taught the facts of the Catechism, but to give the Holy Spirit another chance to fill my heart with the mystery and awesomeness of our God who loves us so dearly. I thank and praise God for that first time around of reading and learning! The Lord s blessings to each of you should you choose a second time, (or a third or hundredth!) 6
