2 Where will we go? These are the opening words of Mary Eberstadt s new book, It s Dangerous to Believe: Religious Freedom and Its Enemies. And the question was: Posed by fellow believers at a dinner in Denver where the topic of discussion had shifted to the growing bellicosity toward believers in the United States. Posed by Jews in Europe in the late 1930s or early 1940s, the question would have needed no explanation only a plausible answer. Posed by Christians during Stalin s purges, or by intellectuals fleeing Pol Pot s persecutions in Cambodia, the question was likewise grasped with terrifying urgency. And a satisfactory answer, which few could find, meant the difference between life and death. But to have the question seriously posed today by highly educated, thoughtful, and compassionate Christians in the United States is no indication of paranoia. It s a stunning revelation of how alarmingly far our nation has drifted in a matter of a few decades. While a list of the increasing assaults on Christians and religious freedoms in our nation could fill entire books, consider just the following: InterVarsity, one of the largest collegiate associations in the country, has been derecognized on a growing number of college campuses. Why are they being denied this long-standing privilege? Because they dare to believe in traditional morals. In 2014, Brendan Eich, CEO of Mozilla and creator of JavaScript, was forced from his position as a result of cyber-shaming. His crime? Having donated $1,000 to California s Proposition 8, a ballot initiative limiting marriage to a man and a woman. Louie Giglio, a Christian pastor in Atlanta widely known for his work against human trafficking, withdraws from giving the benediction at President Barack Obama s second swearing-in ceremony. Why? A progressive watchdog group posted a sermon from the mid-1990s in which he had the audacity to encourage believers to lovingly but firmly resist nontraditional marriage. A visitor to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is ordered to remove a pro-life pin on her lapel before entering because it s a religious symbol. The city of Houston issued subpoenas ordering pastors to turn over any sermons mentioning gender identity and/or the mayor. A US Marine in North Carolina is court-martialed, discharged from the military, and denied military benefits because she posted a motivational poster from Isaiah 54:17 near her office computer ( No weapon formed against me shall prosper ). I wish I could say that the list of assaults stops here. Or that it s restricted to the United States. But here is just a glimpse of what is happening in Great Britain: A teacher is fired for praying for a sick child. Her managers called it bullying. A preacher was sent to jail for speaking threatening words from the Book of Leviticus. A delivery driver loses his job for leaving a crucifix on the dashboard. A couple is denied status as foster parents because they will not recant passages from the Bible. A preschool teacher is fired for refusing to read a book about same-sex parents aloud to 3 yr olds. Again, the list could go on and on. But my point in sharing this is not to scare you with possibilities. My aim is acute sobriety among believers from coast to coast regarding what is now happening each and every day in nations that were once overwhelmingly Christian. The simple and scary truth is that a tsunami of secularism has been unleashed, and we ve not yet seen its high-water mark. In the wake of this onslaught are grave threats to our religious liberties and to millions of Christians. As Mary Eberstadt puts the new dilemma in It s Dangerous to Believe: My faith vs. my job; My faith vs. my social standing; My faith vs. my future. For more and more Christians, such either-or thought experiments aren t theoretical exercises. They are constant real-life 2

3 companions.a few years into the third millennium, in a transformation that has taken almost everyone by surprise, these believers have gone from being mainstays of Western culture to existential question marks within it. But with these threats in mind, let me also share a conviction that some might find surprising. As formidable and relentless as militant secularism is with its attack dogs being unleashed on Christian belief, I don t think that secularism is our greatest foe. I think our greatest enemies are ignorance, denial, indifference, and a retreat into cozy church cocoons or shrinking spiritual ghettoes, naively and simplistically trusting that this too shall pass. You see, hostile secularism is unquestionably winning more and more battles and tenaciously gaining ground. But it advances only as Christians retreat (or simply sleep through the conflict). And only as non-christians of countless persuasions allow the assaults on religious liberty to continue violating Americans most basic freedoms without calling them out and saying, Enough is enough! Believer or not, as Abraham Kuyper once put it, When principles that run against your deepest convictions begin to win the day, then battle is your calling, and peace has become sin. That s why, in continuing to sound an alarm and with an appeal to you to continue making a difference in these battles for truth and life. Better yet, get a copy of this book, read it and give it to a family member, friend, who needs to better understand the menacing conflicts underway and how much is at stake. Not just for you and me but also for future generations who will either laud or lament what you and I did or failed to do during these times of soft persecution that may well turn hard if not stopped in its tracks. Then, I ll be bold enough to ask you to do three things: 1. Watch and pray Or as the English Standard Version puts it, Stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man (Luke 21:36). Be alert to the mounting threats to our freedoms of belief and expression, and pray that God will awaken and fortify His people to stand courageously against this gathering storm. 2. Prepare There will be no favorable outcomes for those ill equipped to deal with the increasing attacks on our faith and our liberties. So read, mark learn and inwardly digest God s Word for us today. Listen to the Bible focused broadcasts and other programs that can alert you to what is going on and equip and encourage you to stand your ground. 3. Act! When push comes to shove in these battles for religious freedoms, it ultimately won t matter what people merely believed. The need not just for orthodoxy (right belief) but also orthopraxis (right action) is upon us.. The critical difference will be made by those who acted in faith on those beliefs to be salt and light in the midst of growing decay and darkness. Among the most strategic actions you can take is to pray about this national election that will be here before you know it. Prepare by listening to the debates, read the different party platforms. Yes, I know none of the candidates are perfect. We probably have the worst case of having to hold our nose when we re in the voting booth that we have ever had to face. When considering the question of choosing between the lesser of two evils, we must begin with what voting is within our system of government. In our system, citizen is an office; we too bear responsibility for the actions of the government. Just as the lordship of Christ made demands for public justice on office-holders in the New Testament (Luke 4:15), the same is true for those who rule as citizens. The great Irish statesman Edmund Burke memorably said two things that are relevant to the battles for truth and life in which we are now engaged: All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing and Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little. For the good you do to help deny the triumph of evil, I m more grateful than words can express. Credit for portions of this to, Christian Research Institute August Newsletter by Hank Hanegraaff 3

6 September 2016 Stewardship The devil, though defeated by the death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, remains a very capable and clever foe. He is smarter than we are. He s been watching us and taking notes for a very long time. He knows what we want, and he knows how to lure us away. And he does this by telling us what we want to hear. That s what makes it so difficult. To us who are greedy, he says: You are not greedy. You are prudent. You are frugal. You are a good steward with your money. God doesn t want you not to have all the things you want. He wants you to be happy. He wants you to have the latest and greatest toys for both young and old. So if you consider yourself to be wise in the way of money and finances, beware of who just might be telling you these things. Satan is a liar. He tells us what we want to hear. He lures us away from repentance and confession and faith, so that we harden our consciences and place our souls in peril. We must not underestimate the enemy. We have all taken his bait. We have all failed in this. None of us can say that we have fought this temptation to hold back with everything we have and won. And we must repent. Yes, God wants us to be happy. But this happiness is never at the expense of faithfulness. We have a calling. We are a member of His family, the church. That relationship places a duty upon us: to give a generous proportion of the first fruits of the income He provides. Only God is true to His Word. Only God is true to His promises. His promises never fail. His Word endures forever. His mercies are new every morning. He is faithful. He provides everything that we need. He provides food and clothes, house and home, everything that we pray for in the fourth petition of the Lord s Prayer. There are a whole host of things that we have that we do not need. The question that we need to ask ourselves is whether these have come at the expense of our faithful, generous proportion of the first fruits of our income. If they have, then we must repent, turning away from our selfishness to Him who is faithful by giving His Son into death so that we are reconciled to Him and justified in His sight. The devil will always tell you what you want to hear. But God tells us and gives us what we need to hear. With law and gospel, he cuts us to the heart, so that we will repent and believe His Word and promises. He is faithful. He is good. He will not forsake you, or leave you destitute. So believe and trust in Him. And you will not only be happy. You will be blessed.

9 SEPTEMBER for daily opportunities for our teachers and staff to show God s mercy, love and forgiveness both inside and outside of the classroom. Pray that God would maintain our ability to practice our faith in Lutheran schools. 2. for the children attending Lutheran schools, that their eyes, ears, hearts and minds would be open to God s Word. Pray For Us Calendar These prayer requests were submitted by coworkers in the Lord s mission. Congregations and individuals are invited to copy these pages for newsletters or other distribution. Download at lcms.org/prayforus or call to request a copy. LUTHERAN SCHOOLS SEPTEMBER 1 15 The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod s (LCMS) School Ministry serves as a national voice for Lutheran schools, upholding the standards of Christ-centered schools that are academically strong and respectfully operated. Nationwide, there are 2,111 LCMS schools, which include 1,190 early childhood centers, 842 elementary schools and 85 high schools. Remember God s work in Lutheran schools as you pray: 3. for Lutheran school principals, who lead stakeholders and congregations to passionately embrace the witness our schools provide to the community. Pray that pastors, principals, directors and teachers would work together in God-pleasing unity. 4. for Lutheran school teachers, that they would correctly divide and deliver Law and Gospel to students through real-life applications each day. 5. for parents who support our Lutheran schools with their time, talents and treasures. Give thanks for their dedication to bring their children up in the faith and to support the mission of the school. 6. for pastors, who champion the Kingdom work happening in our schools. Pray that pastors would be excited to be an integral part of their school s ministry and the teaching of the children. 7. for church members who tell the story of their Lutheran school, that their recommendation might lead more students through the school s doors. 8. for comfort and healing for school faculty and students during times of injury, illness and loss. 9. for the ability of Lutheran schools to serve every child in their care. Ask that the Lord would provide the means to help schools serve children who have disabilities, who have experienced trauma or who come from families with limited resources. 10. for the many non-christians and exchange students who are coming to our schools. Most of them are hearing the Gospel for the very first time. Pray that Gospel seeds will be planted and watered and that they will come to know Jesus. 11. for our early childhood centers that serve on the front lines to introduce young families to the saving love of Jesus. Pray that they are a faithful witness to the littlest of God s children and their families. 12. for first-year teachers, that they may understand the mission of our schools and apply their gifts to demonstrate grace and mercy. Pray that God would give them strength and patience. 13. for courageous Lutheran schools willing to take calculated risks that will result in significant rewards for students. Give the leaders of these schools wisdom in their decisions. 14. for Lutheran schools that are struggling to fill empty seats. Pray that God would revitalize their ministries, energize their staff members and bring more children through their doors. 15. for God to raise up wise and gifted leaders who are willing to serve in the role of administration at Lutheran schools. 10 SEPTEMBER 2016 CAMPUS MINISTRY SEPTEMBER The challenges to Christians on our nation s college campuses are increasing exponentially. On practically every campus, there are objections to the biblical worldview, doctrine, ethics and practices. The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod s (LCMS) campus-ministry arm, LCMS U, aims to encourage, support and help students, faculty and staff in their response to these challenges so they can boldly bear witness to Christ. Remember God s work through LCMS U as you pray: 16. with thanksgiving for a new school year. Please pray that students and campus-ministry workers would return refreshed and with renewed dedication. 17. for the more than 200 LCMS U chapters around the country, that they would receive the support they need to effectively reach out to America s college students. 18. for students starting their first year of college, that they would find Christian friends and make good decisions while living away from home for the first time. 19. for the parents of college students, especially those who have an empty nest for the first time. Pray that they would find joy and contentment in the midst of life s changes. 20. that more congregations and individuals would become involved with their local LCMS U chapters or be led by God to start new ones. 21. that Lutheran college students would be bold witnesses to their faith in Jesus Christ, even when faced with pressure from peers and professors. 22. that young people would hunger for the absolute truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, instead of the relative empty truths of this world. 23. for the 800,000-plus foreign students studying at American colleges and universities. Many come from countries where the Gospel is not freely preached. Pray that their time in the U.S. would provide the opportunity for them to learn about Jesus. 24. for the growth of LCMS U on urban college campuses and at community colleges, two fertile mission fields. Pray that the Lord would open doors to the spread of His Word in these places. 25. for recent college graduates, that they would find gainful employment as well as a church home where they can learn about God s holy Word in all of its truth and purity. 26. for the development of campusministry programs at institutions of higher education around the world. 27. for all the dedicated staff and volunteers involved in campus ministry, that God would energize them for their work and use them to plant seeds of faith that will continue to grow. 28. that God would bless and guide the work of all students involved in mission work and volunteer opportunities both at home and abroad. Please pray that this time would be a blessing to them and others. 29. for busy college students, who are pulled in many directions with the demands of school, work, friends, family and other activities. Pray that they would make their relationship with God a priority by setting aside time for group worship, Bible study and Christian service. 30. for Liberty, the National LCMS Campus Ministry Conference, which is planned for Jan. 4 6, 2017, in College Park, Md. (which is in the metro Washington, D.C., area). Pray for those preparing to lead the event and for those planning to attend, that all would be blessed by the experience.
