2 Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus-The Gospel Opens the Eyes of Faith The Lord called Abraham to leave his home and go to a land that God would show him. (Gen. 12:4) and he believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness (Rom. 4:3). Here the grace of God is manifested, that He justifies the ungodly (Rom. 4:5), not by works of the Law, but through faith in His promises. This forgiveness of sins is the Word of the Gospel, the voice of the Holy Spirit, which gives life to the dead (Rom. 4:17). It opens the eyes of faith to behold Christ Jesus, the Son of Man lifted up on the Cross, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life (John 3:14 15). Children are welcome in worship! If childcare is needed, an unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. Is there something you d like us to pray for today? Prayer Request cards are in each pew. Please hand your request to an usher before the service or during the offering. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express a the belief that Jesus is the Son of God and Son of Man, - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - That Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way - that Christ's sacrificial death grants the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and practice. Those who share these convictions are welcome to come and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine is denatured (alcohol removed). 2

But nothing refreshes and enlivens like the living water Jesus gives, a water with His Word in Baptism that gives new life, forgiveness of sin, and strength to live life. 5 ANNUAL SPRING KITCHEN & DINING ROOM CLEANING: Our kitchen and our tables and chairs need their yearly cleaning. Thursday, March 23 RD at 9:00 a.m. is the day for both men and women to put on your scrubbing clothes and help with the project. The more hands, the faster the project will go. Please bring your own rubber gloves, rags and buckets; we ll purchase the cleaning supplies. We ll keep a coffee pot on. Let s make it a party!! WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP!! Salvation Army March is Food Shelf Month in Minnesota The Salvation Army is seeking food and hygiene donations to help restock their shelves. All March donations go directly to The Salvation Army Central NEED food shelf. Donations of nonperishable food or hygiene items are put to immediate use. High demand items are 100% juice; low sugar cereal; canned chicken, salmon and/or pork; low sugar canned fruit; soups (low sodium chicken noodle and cream of mushroom or chicken); dry or canned beans; granola bars and dried fruit; rice (white, jasmine, or brown); salad dressings; condiments and spices. Culturally specific items include: hominy; rice vermicelli; bean thread; mushrooms (canned); jalapenos; coconut milk; fish sauce; bamboo shoots; and lychee. Hygiene items: toothpaste; toilet tissue; shampoo; bar soap; deodorant. ONLY NON-PERISHABLE FOOD WILL BE ACCEPTED IN OUR GROCERY CART. 6 STEWARDSHIP March 12: Lent 2 John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. This is perhaps the most well-known and well-beloved verse in the New Testament and for good reason. This simple Gospel message is the foundation for our whole life our new life in Christ. This new life is characterized by thankfulness and devotion to our Father who has provided for us so lavishly in Christ. If you have Thrivent insurance, don t forget Thrivent Choice Dollars! 11 Today s Scripture Readings Genesis 12:1-9: Abraham heard the Gospel in the promise He received from the Lord. At the heart of that promise are these words: In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. All the families of the earth are blessed through Abraham because of the Seed of Abraham, our Lord Jesus Christ, who would be lifted up to draw all people to Himself. Romans 4:1-8, 13-17: Paul confirms that what Abraham received from the Lord was the Gospel of God s grace and salvation, that a sinner is justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law. John 3:1-17: Jesus catechesis of Nicodemus amplifies the meaning of Jesus command to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Holy Baptism is God s work. It is the new birth from above by which the Holy Spirit is bestowed upon us and we are made the children of God. The Holy Spirit is given in Baptism that we might believe in the only begotten Son of God who was lifted up on the cross for our salvation. Jesus teaching that we must be born of water and the Spirit confirms the teaching of the Small Catechism that Baptism is not just plain water but it is the water included in God s command and combined with God s Word. God s Spirit is promised in the water of Baptism by God s Word and command to baptize. That no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born from above confirms the catechism s teaching that Baptism works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe as the words and promises of God declare. Jesus teaching that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus forgiveness and salvation is the very content of Holy Baptism to be received by faith. Faith clings to the promises of God in the water of Baptism. For it is the Word of God that is in and with the water that carries the promise of everlasting life. Throughout Jesus catechesis with Nicodemus, He emphasizes the work of the Triune God by whose name Baptism receives its power to give the new birth from above that sinners might see the kingdom of God. 11
