1 Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Website Phone Fax Pastor Rev. Dean W. Gade Phone Office Administrator Jeannie Nelson Organist Angela Huizel DON T FORGET TO TURN BACK YOUR CLOCKS ONE HOUR SATURDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 1 st. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS NOVEMBER 2 nd! UNDERSTANDING WORSHIP The smallest thing, under the influence of God, is made infinitely precious and eternal. If we come to worship focusing on our needs, we will go away feeling let down. If we come wanting a God made in our own likeness, we will be disappointed. If we come rigid in our ideas and set in our ways, we will leave as barren as we arrived. If we put God first, we shall never worship in vain. 2 Thanksgiving in Difficult Times The Pilgrim fathers who landed at Plymouth Rock over 300 years ago knew nothing of the affluent times which you and I enjoy today in this great country of ours, so the next time you are tempted to complain about inflation of food prices, the gasoline prices, the state of our economy, the threat of terrorism, the worry over the Ebola crisis coming to America, personal health issues and even over getting old, remember the following: During that first long winter at Plymouth Colony, seven times as many graves were made for the dead as home for the living. The ship that was to bring food and relief brought 35 more mouths to feed, but not an ounce of provisions. The Pilgrims didn t have much, but they possessed a great gratitude and it was upon this very thing that America was built. These stalwart people, strong, devout and sincere were the timbers upon which our nation was founded. They had a custom of putting 5 kernels of corn upon each empty plate before a dinner of thanksgiving was served. It was to remind them that the first Pilgrims were in such dire straits that their allowance was only 5 kernels of corn per person each day. The fives kernels are a graphic example of what we need to be thankful for Each member of the family would pick up a kernel and tell what they were thankful for. Scripture is filled with examples of people who found the peace and joy of God in praising and thanking God in difficult situations in their lives. To name a few Could you thank God if.....all ten of your children had just been killed in a tragic accident, and that same day you had lost all of your earthly wealth. Would the first thing on your mind be to thank God? Job did. Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: Naked I came from my mother s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job did not charge God with wrong. (Job 1:20-22) you had been unjustly accused of a crime, beaten, and thrown into prison without a trial. Would you be singing hymns of praise to God? Paul and Silas did. The jail keeper put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. (Acts 16:24-25) your wife and most of your children had died from famine, disease, and other effects of war. You were conducting mass funerals for up to 50 people a day. Could you still thank God for His goodness and praise Him? Martin Rinckart did. In fact, he wrote a hymn to thank God for His goodness which could even be found in the midst of such difficult and painful circumstances. The hymn you ask? It is Now Thank We All Our God In this hymn, Pastor Rinckart encourages Christians in all circumstances of life to thank God with hearts and hands and voices. Why? Because God has done wondrous things for us, and has given us countless gifts of love in our lives which still is ours today. Pastor Rinckart emphasizes the fact that God is with us through good and bad times as He promised, Lo, I am with you ALWAYS, even to the end of the world. (Matthew 28:20) It is by God s grace that we are kept safe as God s child to eternity, for it is God s grace in Christ which forgives even our sins of thank-less-ness. We are reminded by God s Word that the devil brings us bad times, difficulties, sorrows, and heartaches in the hope of driving us to despair and hopelessness. The prophet Habakkuk wrestled with the problems that were to come upon Judah in the destruction of the city, the temple, and the people taken into exile. Yes, even God s prophet Habakkuk struggled to see God s will, His loving, gracious and 2

3 helping hand in the midst of such horror and distress. Yet God enabled Habakkuk to see it. In the last chapter of his short book is his prayer in which he wrote, Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor the fruit be on the vines, though the olive should fall, and the fields should produce no grain, though the flock should be cut off and there be no herd in the stall, Yet I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. The Lord is my strength. (Habakkuk 3:17-18) King David in Psalm 103 confesses that God opens His hand and satisfies the desires of every living thing. We might scoff at that and think, He missed me. but the very hand of God worked salvation for us by being stretched out on a cross and hammered through with a piercing spike. The hands of Christ began to save us long before they began to bleed from the spike hammered through them on the cross. His hands continually reached out and comforted the broken hearted and bandaged the sick and healed the dying and yes even raised the dead. His hands broke the bread and lifted the cup before they were ever nailed to the cross. Those hands are proof for us today of the great blessing of forgiveness and eternal life that is ours. We obviously have much to give thanks for on this Thanksgiving. We thank God with our hearts, certainly for God opened His heart to the world of sinners. Without our hearts Thanksgiving is hollow. We thank God with our voices too proclaiming our thanks to the God who spoke to us in love through His Son. Thanks that is felt needs to be spoken. We also thank God with our hands, the hands which He has given to us. His hands did so much for us our hands are a living expression of thanks for the work of His hands. What a comfort it is, that in difficult times God comes to us to comfort us, to assure us that He shoulders the cross with us, and that He has carried the burden of our sin to the cross. All so that we might have hope and help in this life. So maybe we need to pause and turn back to God s Word, and pray as the Psalmist did, O Lord, help us to be thankful that you do "not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities." (Psalm 103:10). I pray that this will be a meaningful Thanksgiving season for you & all your family. Take time to read the 103rd Psalm, there is a lot more in that simple psalm that reminds is that God s love, mercy and protection are here so your heart might overflow with thanksgiving to the Lord. Sincerely in Christ! Pastor Dean Gade NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH we make our giving commitments for the coming year. Therefore, as you consider your giving pledge for 2015 please keep our running deficit in your thoughts and prayers. If you are able to increase your regular giving amount, that would be great. If you find yourself able to give a large lump sum offering during the course of the year that would be wonderful. If you can't, that is fine also. During this month when we ponder the blessings given us by God, lift this concern to Him in prayer. 10 NOVEMBER 2014 Pray For Us Calendar These prayer requests were submitted by coworkers in the Lord s mission. Congregations and individuals are invited to copy these pages for newsletters or other distribution. Download at or call to request a copy. STEWARDSHIP NOVEMBER 1 15 The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod s (LCMS) Stewardship Ministry exists to help congregations grow in their understanding and implementation of a life of stewardship. LCMS Stewardship Ministry produces and freely distributes Bible studies, research, newsletter articles, bulletin sentences, prayers and many other stewardship resources. The ministry also plans stewardship conferences and provides ongoing support for pastors and lay leaders as they implement stewardship plans in their congregations. Remember God s work through LCMS Stewardship Ministry as you pray: 1. for hearts that are thankful for the many blessings of the Lord. Ask that the Lord would teach His people to be content with what He has provided, not wrapped up in chasing after the things of this world. 2. for hearts that imitate the generosity and graciousness of Jesus. Pray that God s people would be eager to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty and clothe the naked. 3. that the Lord would preserve His Word and Sacraments in our midst, so that we may be kept strong in the one, true faith. 4. that the people of God would be faithful in their attendance of the Divine Service, where God strengthens our faith toward Him and our steadfast love for one another. 5. that all the people of God would grow into the stature of the fullness of Christ. 6. that the people of God would live out their vocations in a godly manner, always glorifying the Lord through their actions and words. 7. for useful and gainful employment for those who are unemployed or underemployed. 8. for both the rich and the poor in the Church, that those who have much may always be a blessing to those who have little. 9. for the ministers of the Word, that they would be able to devote themselves to the ministry full time while being able to support their families. 10. for the Church s missionaries, that through them the Word would go forth into the world with power. 11. that the people of God would be good neighbors in the communities where God has placed them. 12. for parents, that they would see their role in raising children as a holy calling from God. 13. for wisdom in caring for the earthly affairs of the Church, that God s people would be honest, faithful and compassionate. 14. for the people of God, that they would find joy and purpose in giving to the Lord s work. 15. for an ever-increasing trust in the Lord s provision. Pray that we would have the wisdom and courage to use our resources as the Lord directs. Worship at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Neb. 11 NOVEMBER 2014 HONG KONG AND MACAU NOVEMBER The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) began work in Hong Kong in 1950, after the formation of the Peoples Republic of China. In 1976, The Lutheran Church Hong Kong Synod officially became an LCMS partner church. The Synod expanded its mission efforts into neighboring Macau in Remember God s work in Hong Kong and Macau as you pray: 16. with thanksgiving for the mission-minded partnership of The Lutheran Church Hong Kong Synod, a partner church of the LCMS. 17. for the Concordia English Center in Macau. The center uses a combination of English-as-a-Foreign-Language teaching, small-group Bible studies and various fellowship activities to gather and evangelize both Cantonese residents of Macau and Mandarin-speaking migrant workers from surrounding areas. 18. for the Church of All Nations in Hong Kong, an English-speaking international LCMS congregation located on the campus of Hong Kong International School. 19. for The Lutheran Church Hong Kong Synod s school system, which educates students at more than 40 schools. These schools reach thousands of unbelieving students and their families with the Gospel of Christ. 20. for missionary Deaconess Carol Halter, who has faithfully served in Hong Kong since May the Lord continue to bless her humanitarian, evangelistic and educational work among the young, the elderly and the poor people who live in Hong Kong. 21. for Megan Kincaid, a career missionary and communication specialist based in Hong Kong. Pray that God would use Megan to clearly communicate the joys, challenges and opportunities of mission work in Asia. 22. for the Rev. Carl and Chenhsi Hanson, missionaries based in Hong Kong. Through his work, Carl helps to connect local churches and schools, creating a link for Asian Lutheran mission outreach in the Asia Pacific region. 23. for the Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation (CWEF), a Hong Kong-based nonprofit organization that works to alleviate poverty through education and service. Please pray that God would open hearts and doors so that CWEF can continue to carry out projects throughout Asia. 24. for the Rev. Michael Parris, a career missionary in Macau, who is working to start a new church at the Concordia English Center and to begin an English-speaking service for foreigners. 25. for Sharon Owens and Steve Wolf, missionaries to Macau, who teach English at the Concordia English Center and build relationships with residents of the area. Please ask God to bless their ministry. 26. that God would stir the hearts of more people to serve on short-term teams to Hong Kong and Macau. Pray that members of these teams would have many opportunities to interact with residents and witness to their faith in Jesus Christ. 27. for Judy Newhouse and Persephone James, LCMS missionaries to Hong Kong. Please ask God to bless their ministries. 28. that God would continue to preserve the freedoms to worship and evangelize in these two special administrative regions of China. 29. with thanksgiving for the missionaries to Macau and Hong Kong who have recently returned to the United States or moved on to new opportunities. 30. that God would raise up more missionaries to serve the people of Hong Kong and Macau.
