Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family, and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus Covered with Christ s righteous, we are holy ones (Saints) The idea of faithfulness in persecution runs through the lessons for All Saints Day. Although for the most part we are protected against persecution, others in the world today are not so fortunate. Even in our own country one may be killed for declaring their belief in Christ. In the faith of such danger we are assured that we are safe because God will protect us, if not from physical suffering and death, then from spiritual abuse. While we are grateful for God s protection and sing His praises. Children are welcome in worship! If childcare is needed, an unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. Is there something you d like us to pray for today? Prayer Request cards are in each pew. Please hand your request to an usher before the service or during the offering. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express the belief that Jesus is the Son of God and Son of Man; - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - that Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way; - that Christ's sacrificial death grants the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly; life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine is denatured (alcohol removed) 2
ALL SAINTS SUNDAY AS WE GATHER In the "Te Deum," we sing of "the noble army of martyrs... the glorious company of the apostles... the goodly fellowship of the prophets and the holy Church throughout all the world" which together praise the Lord. As saints in our time, we join that wonderful assembly, celebrating who we are by God's grace. We are part of the "faithful band" for today and for eternity! 4 TODAY S LUTHERAN HOUR November 5 Blessed Are the Pure in Heart" (Matt 5:8) Guest Speaker: Dr. Dale A. Meyer This weekend many churches observe All Saints Sunday, remembering those who have died in the Christian faith. That prompts us to ask, what does it take to get to heaven? Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:8, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." What that means is this week's Lutheran Hour message. NEXT WEEK ON THE LUTHERAN HOUR November 12 "More Than a Wish" (1 Thess. 4:13-14) Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus Not so long ago over 370 million tickets were sold for a Powerball drawing. Each person who made a purchase had hope that they might become rich. Most were disappointed. In 1 Thessalonians 4, St. Paul explains how the resurrection hope of Christians is better than the hopelessness of the world and far more solid than groundless wishful thinking. Listen on WCCO AM at 6:05 am, Sunday mornings, or listen anytime at or on XM Satellite Radio you can also hear The Lutheran Hour on XM 170 Sundays at noon STEWARDSHIP: All Saints Day Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. This is one of many Bible passages that remind us that we reap what we sow. Likewise, what God puts into us (His own love, mercy, kindness, and generosity) flows back out of us. For it all starts with His self-giving! ANNUAL VOTERS MEETING SUNDAY, NOV. 12 th AFTER 10 am WORSHIP SERVICE LUTHERANS FOR LIFE November 5 God calls us all to support widows and orphans, but that certainly does not mean every person is equipped to adopt a child. You can support a child in need without becoming his or her parent. Consider sponsoring a child overseas, going on a shortterm mission trip to an orphanage, or financially supporting couples who adopt children through adoption grant-giving organizations. There are many ways to become involved. Kim Laube, B.A., Lutheran Family Service, Urbandale, Iowa A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life 4

If you are interested in being our Forum Rep, contact Pastor. Your Congregation s Two Representatives The circuit forum consists of a pastor of each congregation and one lay member of each congregation designated by the congregation (Synod Bylaw 5.3.2). Each congregation is entitled to a lay member of the congregation as the other voting representative. The selection of the Lay delegate for the Circuit Forum and the Lay Delegate for the District Convention will be done at the Annual Voter s Meeting on November 12 th. 6/21-23/2018 (Thurs -Sat) MN South District Convention Wherever you live, open your door. Yep! It s right outside. Living on mission isn t something that is programmed; rather it s the rhythm of living out the gospel where ever we call home. "We talk of the second coming, but half of the world has never heard of the 1st. Oswald J. Smith Yes, we should live out the gospel wherever we call home. Let us also be willing to relocate our home to where the gospel is not. Let s not casually hear about people who have never heard of Jesus, but do everything possible, locally and globally, to make certain they have an opportunity to hear. 5

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack November 9-11 We re incredibly excited to be hosting our second Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack November Like last year, we need your help to make it a success. Our goal this year is to pack 750,000 meals. We need to raise $165,000 to make this happen. There are two ways this goal can be easily met: Each person that volunteers to pack raises and/or donates $50 You can make a direct donation to FMSC at give.fmsc.org/lcms or send a check to: C/O Dave Gunlaugsson Feed My Starving Children 990 Lone Oak Rd. Suite #136 Eagan, MN Include EA LCMS in the memo Ask family, friends, and neighbors to sponsor you. Each volunteer packs an average of 216 meals (@ $.22/meal). Invite them to sponsor 5, 10, 50, 100, or all of your meals. Skip a meal out and use the money saved for FMSC. Save your pocket change and donate that to FMSC. Use one of FMSC's ideas. Each congregation raises and/or donates $ Direct Sunday School or day school chapel offerings to FMSC. Hold a door offering. Include FMSC in your congregation s missions or overall budget. Hold a small fundraiser. You ll see the links to registration on our giving page, but they re not open until toward the end of September, so stay tuned for that information. For more information or questions, contact Rev. Steve Andrews. 10
Catechesis Note for the Week Why do we celebrate All Saints Day? Lutherans have always understood that there is great benefit in remembering the saints whom God has given to the Church. Our churches teach that the remembrance of saints may be commended to us so that we may imitate their faith and good works according to our calling. The Apology of the Augsburg Confession (Article 21) lists three reasons for such honor. First, we thank God for giving faithful servants to His Church. Second, through such remembrance our faith is strengthened as we see the mercy that God extended to His saints of old. Third, these saints are examples both of faith and of holy living to imitate according to our calling in life. Included in this is the remembering of those saints who have died during the previous year in the congregation. Their faith and its expression in their lives have established them as individuals who deserve our recognition and regard, not for their own sake but for the greater glory of God among His people. An encouragement to the observance of these commemorations of individuals in the great cloud of witnesses is written in the Letter to the Hebrews: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1). The list of individuals chosen for this list of commemorations is representative and not exhaustive. Certainly, other names could have been added whose commemorations would also be of edification to God's people. For those who observe the commemorations the purpose is to focus on Christ Jesus and His Gospel, giving thanks to God for demonstrating His mercy through graced and gifted women and men through whom the Holy Spirit has accomplished wonderful things. As the Confessions simply and encouragingly state: "It is truly worthwhile to hear of these things and to see some examples of mercy" (Apology to the Augsburg Confession, XXI, 3) 11
Today s Scripture Readings Revelation 7:9-17 The first half of this text, verses 9-12, depicts an innumerable mass of people from every corner of the earth worshipping God. This opening vision evokes numerous biblical passages from both the Old Testament and New Testament. In a way similar to the story of Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles, the multitude counterbalances the Tower of Babel story from Genesis John 2:28-3:1-3 1 John 2:28-29 encourages Christians to "abide," or persist with endurance, in that domain defined once for all by Christ so that when He is revealed at His royal coming the church may stand before Him unashamed, but with bold confidence This urging drives home with concentrated force to the church the already/not yet tension that typifies New Testament eschatology overall, paving the way for a reserved assurance in 3:2a: "Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed." John 6:37-40 The story of the multiplication of the loaves (6:26-59) is the fourth sign of the 7 recorded in the Gospel according to John. It is the only miracle story found in all four gospels (occurring twice in Mark and Matthew). The verses we read today emphasize Jesus constant protection of His disciples. He is the Good Shepherd; He is the vine, the Way, the Truth and the Life. In His final prayer (John 17), Jesus asked the Father to guard and protect His friends. Today, Jesus affirms once again that the will of God is that He should not lose anything of what God gave Him, but that He should raise them up on the last day. The Father's will is that everyone who knows the Son and believes in Him, shall have eternal life, and that in the resurrection day Christ shall raise him from the grave. These verses show that the will of the Father applies to everyone who believes in the Son and that Christ has brought to light immortality. He is the resurrection and the life.
