2 Welcome to God s house today!!! A special welcome to visitors today; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family or if we can be of any help to you, please call the pastor or speak with him after the service. We pray that as we celebrate Christ s resurrection, as every Sunday is a celebration of this that, you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus The Prayer of the Church Is the Voice of Faith. Jesus catechizes His disciples in the way of faith by teaching them how to pray. He promises us: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you (Luke 11:9). If earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13). Thus, father Abraham was bold in his prayer because he believed the gracious promise of the Lord that he would surely become a great and mighty nation... (Gen. 18:18). When we pray in Jesus' name, we also hold fast to the Head (Col. 2:19), rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith (Col. 2:6 7). Children are welcome in worship! If childcare is needed, an unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. We also have quiet activity toys for children s use during worship on the ushers counter in the back. On Holy Communion Sundays, children are also welcome to come with you where they will receive a blessing. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we believe that Jesus is the Son of God & Son of Man, - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - That Jesus offers us His Body & Blood in a mysterious yet real way - that Christ's sacrificial death assures us of forgiveness of all our sins - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and practice. Those who share these convictions are welcome to come and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. In these three areas (home, Church, and society) the Lord has called us to show His grace and generosity to those around us. Martin Luther understood that we must develop a practical Biblical lifestyle, the joining of what we believe with how we live. Come join in the four week study in learning to apply the Scriptural truths to our daily living. Sunday at 8:45 am WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY We will be finishing the Epistle of James on Wednesday July 27 th. STARTING Wednesday AUGUST 3 rd at 10 am We start a new study on 1 st Peter as we ask ourselves - How can you be holy within an immoral culture? How do you function in a society where Christians are an oppressed minority? 1 Peter recognizes the difficulties that Christians encounter when living in a society that opposes their values. Thus, it is highly relevant for Christians living in a modern society. So you are welcome to come as we tackle these important questions. The August KOA/50+ will be on August 11 th instead of the 18 th so not to conflict with the above Birthday party. We will meet at church to carpool at 11:00 am. Then we will go to the HyVee store in New Hope for a tour followed by lunch at Country Kitchen. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Please sign your name if you will be joining us. 7 Catechesis Note for the Week A LUTHERAN PERSPECTIVE ON PRAYER In the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Philip Melanchthon declared that in the churches of the Augsburg Confession, sermons avoided trivialities and dealt with central aspects of Christian life. Among them, he specifically mentioned prayer, what it should be like and that everyone may be completely certain that it is efficacious and is heard. One might think that prayer is so common that it needs no study. Reflecting on the implications of this biblical and universal truth, J. W. Acker concludes that. the desire to pray is instinctive with man. As man s belief in the existence of the soul and in the reality of a hereafter seems to be innate, so there seems to be lodged in man s heart a natural impulse to pray. As naturally as the wing of a bird seeks flight or the fin of the fish takes to water, so the human heart yearns for a higher being, a god. Aware of his utter helplessness, man instinctively seeks help from his god or gods, especially in times of adversity and distress. God has put eternity into man s heart, says the Preacher, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end (Eccles. 3:11). Kenneth Korby asserts that it is human to pray; and we acknowledge that much prayer, day and night, is carried on that is not in the name of Jesus. To be sure, he says, such instinctual prayer, must be distinguished from the prayer of faith. Yet there is clearly a drivenness in our creaturehood that gives humanity no resignation from praying. As praying Christians, seeking to fulfill our mission and destiny as God s church in the world, we need to understand this phenomenon. This groping after God through prayer, even when seriously misdirected, is actually a sign of the divinely-planted knowledge of God that still survives and surfaces in every human mind and heart. St. Paul might well respond to the surge of interest in spirituality in our society today much as he did in first-century Greece: I see that in every way you are very religious! Very religious, yet Paul could not leave them as they were, for while their religiosity identified a very real need for God, neither our human groping after God nor our begging enable us to find or know God with confidence. 7

8 Today s Scripture Readings Genesis 18:(17-33: Abraham had the courage to pray to the Lord for mercy for Sodom and Gomorrah because of the promise of God s Word to save His children who trust in Him. We intercede for others on the basis of the Gospel. Colossians 2:6-19): The faith and love that Christians share in Christ rests upon the redemption that we have through the blood of Christ, even the forgiveness of all our sins. Christ is the image of God and the One who holds all things together. Luke 11:1-13: When Jesus teaches His disciples to pray, He gives them the very words to say. Prayer rests upon the promises of God s Word. Before the Lord s Prayer ever becomes our prayer to the heavenly Father, it is His Word to us! This makes every petition of the Lord s Prayer a promise of God to us. Therefore, we can pray and ask God for these things in the Lord s Prayer with absolute certainty! After giving the Lord s Prayer, Jesus then teaches on prayer through the Parable of the Friend at Midnight. If a friend will give you what you ask of him, not because he is your friend, but because you pester him with your need, how much more can the Lord, who loves you with an everlasting love, be relied upon to give you the Holy Spirit and faith? The Christian prays to God incessantly, not because his persistence makes God act, but because of the Lord s love and His promises to help. The Lord promises the Christian daily bread, forgiveness of sins, rescue from temptation and the power of the devil. His promises are based upon His love, not our worthiness. This parable teaches us with what faith we pray the Lord s Prayer. Next Week s Readings 11 th Sunday after Pentecost Ecc 1:2,12-14, 2:18-26; Psalm 100 Colossians 3:1-11; Luke 12:13-21 The messengers of Jesus will be hated to the end of time. They will be blamed for all the division which rend cities and homes. Jesus and His disciples will be condemned on all sides for undermining family life, and for leading the nation astray; they will be called crazy fanatics and disturbers of the peace. The disciples will be sorely tempted to desert their Lord. But the end is also near, and they must hold on and persevere until it comes.
