2 Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family, and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We invite all guests to sign the Guest Register. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus The King Is Coming The Kingdom of God is a major theme in God s holy history, from the house and lineage of David to David s greater Son and Lord, whose birth we anticipate in this season of Advent. The sermons during advent will focus on the appointed lessons from the Old Testament prophets, who spoke from the perspective of their own times under the kings of Israel and Judah, with all their human foibles and failures. Yet the Word of God through these words of the prophets speaks of a greater king to come, whose kingdom will have no end. Our lives as God s people in Christ are lived under Him in His Kingdom, as Luther put it under the righteous rule and reign of Christ our King. Christmas celebrates His birth and coming among us, even as we pray as He taught us, Thy Kingdom Come. May our Advent worship help us prepare and rejoice, for the King is coming! Children are welcome in worship! If childcare is needed, an unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express the belief that Jesus is the Son of God and Son of Man; - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - that Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way; - that Christ's sacrificial death grants the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly; life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine is denatured (alcohol removed) 2

3 First Sunday in Advent AS WE GATHER Humility and thankfulness: they often go hand in hand. When God s people look up to Him as their source and provider of every blessing, how can they not burst forth in songs of thankfulness and praise? That s what we do today as we begin our Advent journey. We humble ourselves in the sight of our Redeemer. Then we thank Him for His gracious promise to send a Savior and turn the darkness of sin in our lives into the bright light of His forgiveness, love and salvation! Dr. Michael Zeigler The book of Ruth deals with unimportant people and unimportant matters, but deals with them in such a way as to show that God is active in ordinary lives-like yours and mine. Ruth's story became an important part of the story of Jesus. Listening to God's work in her life can rescue us from dead end delusions and bring us into what is most real-a Jesus-centered reality. Dr. Michael Zeigler When people use the word "redeem" outside of religious context, they tend to use it in a commercial sense-redeeming points from purchases or casino tokens for cash. In the Bible, the word "redeem" is used in a family setting. In the story of Ruth, Boaz is a "kinsman redeemer," who points to Jesus, our capital-r-redeemer. Jesus has done more than pay our points. He redeems by bringing us into his clan, his people, his household, that we might be with him forever. 6 STEWARDSHIP: Dec. 2 (Advent I) Luke 19:31 If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you shall say this: The Lord has need of it. Consider the faithfulness of that man who owned the donkey and colt. All he needed to hear was, The Lord has need of it, and he willingly gave. The Lord has given each of us various callings in life in our homes, in the Church, and in our communities. In each calling we have good work to do, and that comes from the Lord s hand. The Lord has need of us in each calling. How is He calling you to generous giving in each of your vocations? LUTHERANS FOR LIFE: December 2 Advent is about Return the Lord s Second Coming, our return to Him, which is another way of saying repentance. Repentance requires memory, for return requires memory. The Prodigal did some mental research and remembered the facts about his father's house from his personal history. Informed by a paternal history, he struck a new course, which was to return. And the Homecoming was sweet, like the marriage supper in paradise, when all history will be fulfilled, and the guests live happily ever after. Advent reminds us, based on history that we know, that He is coming, which should remind us, Repent! James M. You may purchase anything that is appropriate. However, there is a greater need for gifts for 0-3 and year olds. Gift collection will run from November 18 th through December 9 th. You may bring your UNWRAPPED gifts to church and place them under the Christmas tree. The Salvation Army s auditors have requested we add the monetary value of each gift that is donated. SALVATION ARMY For the month of December Gloria Dei graciously donated 103 pounds of food to the Salvation Army Food Shelf. Due to the holiday season, food shelfs are in greater need of food more than ever! As a reminder, ethnic foods are in high demand, as is cooking oil, canned fruits and vegetables, ramen, spaghetti sauce and noodles, flour, rice, macaroni and cheese, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, etc. Thanks you for your donations! December 8:00 am - 12:00 pm - PANCAKE BREAKFAST Boy Scout Troop 167, which is comprised of scouts from Columbia Heights and Fridley, will have an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, Sunday, Dec. 2, 8 am-noon, at St. Williams Church, 6120 Fifth St. NE, in Fridley. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice. There will also be a bake sale. A freewill donation will be collected at the door. Singing the Christmas Story with St. Luke Catholic Eldercare will host a free presentation on Monday, December 3, 1:30-3 pm at the MainStreet Lodge, 909 Main St. NE. The birth of Jesus as told in St. Luke s gospel is surrounded in song. And people have been singing about this birth story ever since. 11 Catechesis Note for the Week The Beginning of the Church Year Advent is a season of repentance and hope. It is a time of self-reflection that is similar to Lent. As we struggle through the difficulties of life and the weaknesses of our own fallen nature we are reminded of our need for the coming of Christ. Advent is the season of comings as is the meaning of the word itself. He came in the incarnation and was born of the Virgin Mary to be our Savior. He will come again in glory to release us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven. But He also comes to us now, right where we live with all of our struggles and hardships, through the preached Word and Sacrament. It is this Word that is the power of God for our salvation and for the living of our lives in a fallen world. We are taught during Advent to live by the sufficiency of this Word of Promise the Gospel of Christ that is so powerful that it is able to give us the gift of salvation and to rescue us from every attack upon our faith. It is the Word of Promise in the Gospel that gave our forefathers in the faith hope when there was nothing else to depend upon. And it is the same Word of Promise in the Gospel that gives us hope hope that is NOT simply wishful thinking for a better tomorrow, but a living and vibrant faith that is anchored in the certainty of what Christ has accomplished for us in His death and resurrection. 11

12 Today s Scripture Readings JEREMIAH 33:14-16: Weak and vacillating leadership by the current king of Judah was leading the nation into disobeying the will of the Lord, and consequently they were heading towards his judgment. Jeremiah stood up against the popular political swell of support for this movement of the court towards national disaster. This brought down on him universal anger and hatred. Yet he could see ahead to a time when, despite what judgments God would bring, there would arise a Messianic King, a shoot from the present fallen stump of the house of David. This King would rule in perfect righteousness. His kingdom would therefore also carry that name of righteousness. Jesus the Christ is the true fulfilment of this prophecy. 1 THESSALONIANS 3:9-13: We receive here an insight into Paul s love and concern for his converts. It led him to be overjoyed when he heard reports of living which was worthy of the gospel. His desire to return personally to affirm and confirm the Thessalonians in their faith was prominent in his prayers. He also offers the prayer here that the love of which he had heard might increase yet again and that the hope of the Lord s glorious return might encourage and spur them on to even greater strengths in holiness. LUKE 19:28 40 The first Sunday in Advent traditionally begins with the reading of the Palm Sunday story of our Lord Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey as the multitudes confess the words of the Passover Psalm: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! In Advent we celebrate the coming of our King, Christ Jesus, who was born of the Virgin, who comes to us in His Word and Sacraments, and who will come again in glory. The song of the pilgrims on Palm Sunday reminds us that Jesus came to die and that His kingdom is inaugurated through His suffering and death as the true Passover Lamb who came to set us free from the bondage to sin. Anticipation, yearning, and blessed hope for our Savior s return in glory characterize the season of Advent.
