1 ST. JAMES UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 2945 Main Street, East Troy, WI Rev. Lorrin Radzik The daily bread August 2014 Pastor s Ponderings August already?! Time flies when you attending meetings, leading worship, and getting to know new people! It s hard to believe that I have been with you for a month already! It has been a good month and I am looking forward to deepening relationships and growing in love together in the coming months. This August, we ll be talking and thinking together about the many ways that God calls us into ministry. In 1 Peter 2, we read that God has claimed us as God s people and called us to be in ministry to all the world. In worship together, we ll be focusing our time on welcoming new people, being examples of Christ in the world, and who we are in Christ. It s an exciting time of the year to be thinking about the ways that we serve others and the ways that God meets us in community. Soon, the familiar rhythm of school and work, programs, and the liturgical year will begin to take over. Gone will be the days spent on the beach and the extra time with children and grandchildren. I m looking forward to these days as we prepare to begin Confirmation Classes and think about beginning a youth group. I m hopeful and excited about the ways that St. James will continue to reach out in Christ s love into our community and to serve our neighbors each day. I look forward to welcoming back Kookho Kim as our Student Pastor and working with him to continue to serve you here at St. James. As we begin to look forward to the changes that fall will bring, let s remember who we are at St. James, and join us for worship in August as we talk about God s calling for each of us and as we prepare for the upcoming school and program year. Blessings, Pastor Lorrin

Thank you to Nancy for all the hard work on the Education Committee, we appreciate her care for our children and youth. ************** A heartfelt thank you to the Trustees and all who were involved with readying the parsonage for Dave and I! 3 MISSIONARY WEBSTER On June 30, a small group of ladies attended the presentation and video of Rev. Paul Webster. Hearing and seeing about his projects was most interesting and intriguing. A delicious pot luck and fellowship followed. He left a video with us and it was shown to those in the congregation that were interested on July 20 after worship service. He really needs our financial support. The Conference number is 3640 but Paul prefers a more direct payment of 15016A. Checks can be made out to St. James UMC also and please put Paul Webster and 15016A in the memo on your check. ******************************************* OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Another exciting shoebox season is about to begin. Please help St. James United Methodist Women fill several shoeboxes for delivery around the globe. Samaritan s Purse first began collecting these gifts in Now twenty years later in 2013, God worked through people like you to reach almost 10 million children. Praise God and thanks to everyone who participated!! It s not too early to get involved in the excitement of Operation Christmas Child, as school supplies are now on sale. We have red/green boxes to fill in the Narthex. NO need to save shoeboxes. An area in the Narthex will be available for all boxes. A check of $7 should accompany each filled shoebox for mailing and shipping costs. Checks need to be made out to St. James UMC and designated Shoe Box Mission and placed in the Sunday s collection plate. A suggested list follows this article and also is on the ledge in the Narthex. Please join us in bringing the true meaning of Christmas to boys and girls around the world. God Bless You! 6 Take a Moment... To Grow Closer to God! Shaped to Serve God has made each of us a unique individual shaped to serve and to glorify Him! Recently, our granddaughter, Meg, and her husband, Joe, came to visit. They brought our 3 month old great grandson, Stoxen, to meet us. Meg and Joe were on a mission to introduce Stoxen to the members of the family who don t live in Minnesota. Stoxen has already traveled to Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, Wisconsin and Washinton, DC. Meg and Joe are reaching out to Stoxen s widely scattered family, letting us know that we are a loved and valued partner in the upbringing of our newest family member. Reaching out has a warm feel to it. To me, it means sharing our love, talents and faith with others. Christians believe that worship is not only Sunday pew sitting, but rather a lifelong, seven-days-a-week witness to others. The act of worship is living in Christ in everything we do. People who reach out to help others know that challenges in our lives need the love and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Remembering our challenges and how Christ helped us to solve them makes us worthy to spread that knowledge to others. Many acts of worship happen within the St. James faith family. When individuals take food to shut ins, it is an act of worship. When we encourage others, it is an act of worship. When we use our talents to work in the church, it is an act of worship. When we participate in missions in our community and beyond, it is an act of worship. God commands us to reach out to meet the needs of others. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:1-2) Jesus established the church to spread His message throughout the world. He appointed all of us to serve as His disciples. The worship setting helps us to fulfill our calling to serve other believers in practical ways. All of you together are Christ s body, and each one of you is a part of it (1 Corinthians 12:27) Acts of worship are needed in the Body of Christ. Each of us has a role to play, and every role is important. We are dependent upon one another for the church to continue to grow. Sadly, thousands of local churches are dying because of a lack of service and witness. For some, the upholstered pews are more comfortable than pursuing acts of worship. God has put a calling on our lives, His plan of purpose for us. To fulfill God s calling, we must develop the gifts He gave to us, and always give God our best. Be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith, and purity. Don t neglect your spiritual gifts, but practice these things and devote yourself to them, in order that your progress may be seen by all. (1 Timothy 4:12, 14-15) To fulfill your calling, refuse to be distracted. Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. (1 Timothy 4:16) Timothy traveled many miles with Paul spreading the gospel to thousands. Paul said of his brother in faith, I have no one else like Timothy (Philippians 2:20) Can God say this about us? Yes, He can, if we stay focused on the Word and committed to God s purpose for us. The Holy Spirit in our hearts will give us the love and self-discipline we need to witness and to reach out to others. Run your best in the race of faith, and win eternal life for yourself, for it was to this life that God called you. (1 Timothy 1:12) Praise be to God! Judy McFarlane
7 STRAIGHT FROM THE ARK! A Mission of St James United Methodist Church Our mission at Noah s Ark Christian Day Care is to provide a safe, fun and spiritual environment for children. Report from the Directors Last month we welcomed five new children to our center, one Infant, two Preschool children and two School Agers! We have been very busy keeping the kids active this summer. So far we have gone to Gus, the Library, Booth Lake, mini golfing and walks to the park. All ages participate in water day once per week. Our little ones can be seen in the grassy area outside with two small pools and a sprinkler. Our school age children go to Booth Lake every Thursday. Also in August we are going roller skating, a trolley ride, and to see a movie. Pastor Lorrin has been reading to all the children on Thursday afternoons and the children all look forward to the stories. We will also have an end of summer pizza party!
