2 Welcome to God s house today!!! A special welcome to visitors today; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family or if we can be of any help to you, please call the pastor or speak with him after the service. We pray that as we celebrate Christ s resurrection, as every Sunday is a celebration of this that, you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus People of God, Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! As we come to the last two Sundays of the Easter Season, we begin to get a sense of the surpassing greatness of the resurrection. In our passage, Jesus is preparing His disciples, so they may persevere and believe. Jesus has been with them throughout His ministry and now He promises not to abandon them. This preparation is precisely what they will need when Jesus dies at the cross. This Upper Room Discourse is filled with contrasting language. The language of going and coming, grief and joy, tribulation and peace, asking and receiving, seeing and not seeing, parable and open speech, unbelief and faith, the world and God. Children are welcome in worship! An unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. On Communion Sundays, children are also welcome to come with you and they will receive a blessing. THE LORD S SUPPER is celebrated on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of the month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord and one another: we express a faith that Jesus is Son of God and Son of Man that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; that Jesus offers us His Body & Blood in a mysterious yet real way that Christ's sacrificial death is for the forgiveness of our sins; that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and practice. Those who share these convictions are welcome to come and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine in the center is denatured (alcohol removed) wine. 2

Martin Luther said this about our faith: Oh, it is a living, busy, active, mighty thing, this faith. And so it is impossible for it not to do good works incessantly. The Word of God is not merely to be heard, but to be received and believed, and implemented. James reminds us of this and encourages us to examine our lives and come to repentance where we can see that we are not living out our faith in sincerity. 7 Catechesis Note for the Week "What does it mean to pray in Jesus' name?" Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. John 14:13-14 ESV You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, He may give it to you. John 15:16 ESV In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. John 16:23-27 ESV Some misapply this verse, thinking that saying in Jesus name at the end of a prayer results in God s always granting what is asked for. This is essentially treating the words in Jesus name as a magic formula. This is absolutely unbiblical. What does "in someone's (anyone's) name" mean? It means to act by proxy, on the authority of something or someone greater than yourself. When a herald reads a proclamation "in the name of the king," or a cop yells at a fleeing thief to "stop in the name of the law!" this is what they mean. It's a convenient shorthand for "I'm not just saying this of myself; I'm speaking with the authority of a higher power." Praying in Jesus' name means the same thing as praying according to the will of God, This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us whatever we ask we know that we have what we asked of Him (1 John 5:14-15). Genuinely praying in Jesus' name and for His glory is what is important, not attaching certain words to the end of a prayer. It is not the words in the prayer that matter, but the purpose behind the prayer. Praying for things that are in agreement with God s will is the essence of praying in Jesus name. 7

8 Today s Scripture Readings Acts 16:9-15: Paul s ministry in Europe begins in Philippi, Macedonia and included the baptism of Lydia, seller of purple. Even though there was a small population of Jews in Philippi, Paul would continue the practice of gathering with the Jews on the Sabbath to proclaim from the Old Testament Scriptures that Jesus of Nazareth is, indeed, the Christ. As Christians were converted in Philippi, they began to meet as a congregation in the home of the wealthy Lydia. Revelation 21:9-14, 21-27: In the final picture of heaven in the Revelation to St. John we see that the Church s temple is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb Himself! In the immortal and eternal communion with our Lord we shall need no created sun or moon, for the glory of God and the Lamb is the eternal light that warms and illumines all. John 16:23-33: Prayer is central to the Church, her ministry, and the Christian s own faith and life. Prayer in Jesus name is prayer that asks for the gifts and help that Jesus promises in the Gospel. If the Church is troubled by persecution and suffering, she is to pray for strength. If she is tempted to unfaithfulness, she is to pray for faithfulness. If you have sinned, pray for forgiveness. If you are tempted by the devil, pray for deliverance. If you are weak in fulfilling the responsibilities of your calling, pray for strength. We have Jesus sure and certain promise: Whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Our prayers are heard and they are absolutely answered when they are anchored in God s Word. Like the disciples before us, our faith, too, often wanes. They scattered and fled from Him, yet they were able to be restored because of His promise of grace to them in the Gospel. The same is true for us. These things I have spoken to you, Jesus said, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
