Couples can contact Missy and Tom to register: thelauty5@comcast.net or Gospel Reflection July 8, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ez 2:2 5; Ps 123:1 2, 2, Cor 12:7 10; Mk 6:1 6 The prophet Ezekiel is sent to a rebellious people. They are "obstinate of heart" (v 4), but still he must speak the words; they must hear them, for the Lord has something to say. When he has spoken, "they shall know that a prophet has been among them" (v 5). Like ancient Israel, sometimes we too know God is speaking to us, but we refuse to listen. Paul speaks of the mysterious "thorn in the flesh" (v 7) that was given to him to keep him humble. Though tons of ink have been spilled over this passage, no one has conclusively determined what exactly this "thorn" was. But its significance is spelled out by the apostle as he tells us that through it he came to humbly rely on God's grace rather than on his own strength. In our own lives as well, when we are weak, we sometimes experience the strength of God. Jesus's visit to the synagogue of Nazareth elicits a mixed response from the crowd. For Mark this is true of the reception given to the gospel in his time as well. He tells us that many who heard Jesus "were astonished" (v 2), marveling in the wisdom of his words and mighty deeds. But others are not convinced, and "they took offense at him" (v 3). This response is not unexpected, as Jesus indicates by the proverb he quotes. Their problem is that they know him, and their expectations of him do not allow for him to be a great preacher or miracle worker. So his visit to Nazareth is relatively uneventful because of their lack of faith: "he was not able to perform any mighty deed there" (v 6). For reflection: How do I deal with rejection or failure when I am doing God's work? What "keeps me humble"? Do I allow God's grace to overshadow my own weaknesses? ML

All adults in the parish are welcome to join us. We meet at 9:15 AM in the Faith Formation Office on Thursday mornings. We are currently reading the Gospel of John. If you are new to scripture study, we are happy to help you along. Coffee is on! Faithful Citizenship Hub Pool Party Thursday, August 2nd 7:30-9:30 PM All are Welcome Cost: FREE Bring your own drinks and snacks The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has been proactive about encouraging and supporting Catholics in their political lives. Every four years, leading up to our presidential elections, the Bishops write a pastoral call to political responsibility on the part of Catholics. They build on Scripture, writings of the popes, and their own past documents on faithful citizenship. We bishops seek to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with the truth, so they can make sound moral choices in addressing these challenges. We do not tell Catholics how to vote. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience. In light of this teaching, Holy Name Parish will be covering the document, Faithful Citizenship, this September at its Generations of Faith sessions. We invite all in the parish to attend and learn how to discern our voting choices with an informed conscience. We will also be including a flyer of the document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, in one of the July bulletins. We invite you to read and reflect on this document as this election season has already shown us some very heated propaganda from all sides of the fence.

As part of our learning experience, we studied some of the parables of Jesus. We then wrote our own modern parables. We will be sharing these with you throughout the summer. These parables were written by children, teens and adults. Some of the wisest of the bunch come from our youngest parishioners. We invite you to take some time over the summer to look at the parables of Jesus and reflect on our modern offerings. (PS A parable is a story that teaches about the kingdom of God. They can be found in the Gospels.) The kingdom of God is like Godzilla because it is strong and powerful. The kingdom of God is like a baby tree in an empty patch of land because it gives us hope. The kingdom of God is like a book, there is either a happy or sad ending. The kingdom of God is like a marshmallow because it tastes good and sticks together. The kingdom of God is like a telephone because you can always reach someone through prayer. The kingdom of God is like a large glass of water refreshing. The kingdom of God is like an oven mitt because it protects us. The kingdom of God is like a mansion. It s a place you can live for a long time. It s peaceful there. The kingdom of God is like a home you are safe in and are surrounded by family and friends. The kingdom of God is like a good meal. It can keep you full for a LONG! time. The kingdom of God is like a GPS because you never get lost. July 11, 2012 How to Build Healthy Relationships Whether you are single, engaged or married, healthy relationships are important to young adults. Why is it that so many struggle? Learn what you can do to have healthy relationships be a part of your life. This workshop will discuss the different skills needed depending upon whether you are single and searching, dating and determining, or engaged or married and committed. Presenter Frank Hannigan, Director of Family Ministries in the Archdiocese of Chicago and former advisor to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Marriage and Family Life.
