The text is concerned with religious fidelity. Give to the Most High as he has given to you, / generously, the author advises just before the text of today s reading. Throughout the Bible God is depicted as a giving, generous God: creating, calling, redeeming, forgiving, revealing. God s act of self-revelation is an invitation to a relationship that results in blessings for us. He shows no partiality toward the weak but has a special concern for the oppressed the orphan the widow. In 2 Timothy we hear that the just judge will give the crown of righteousness to those whose lives witness to their faith. God is faithful, and those whose lives have been spent in the service of the gospel, like Paul, have reason to stand firm in their faith. The Lord will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom. With his time of departure at hand, Paul is confident in God s goodness. In today s parable we hear of a Pharisee who is convinced of his own goodness and a tax collector conscious of his own sinfulness. Luke tells us that Jesus addressed this parable / to those who were convinced of their own righteousness / and despised everyone else. The Pharisee goes beyond the requirements of the Law; the Law requires an annual fast, but he fasts twice a week. But he is blinded by his own pride, which tells him he is not like the rest of humanity. This is his downfall, for whoever exalts himself will be humbled. He may be keeping the Law, but he fails to love his neighbor, and in failing to do this he fails to love God as he should. For reflection: How do I witness to my faith? We discuss current events, books, movies and just 'stuff" and how they relate to the church and out daily lives. All adults in the parish are welcome. We meet from 9:15 to around 11 AM weekly. Who: As for Me and My House Sponsored by Holy Name Generations of Faith Everyone who attends Mass; especially Lectors, Ushers, EMHC s, Altar Servers, Cantors, What: A fun and engaging workshop that incorporates original music; concrete, practical and easily applied suggestions; reflection; stories; poetry and scripture led by Catholic workshop presenter, writer, storyteller, dramatist, singer, song writer, retreat leader, Sam Kauffman, a roster artist with NEAG with over twenty years of ministry experience. Workshop includes a meal. When: Sunday, Nov. 10 from 10:15 am to 12:15 pm - OR - Monday, Nov. 11 from 6:15 to 8:15 pm Where: Holy Name Gym (in school building) Please join us for a morning or evening exploring the question: "How is my personal/family spiritual development essential to my faith? This workshop is for all ages and all in the parish are welcome to attend. For anyone not registered in GOF there is a $5.00 fee for food and materials. We are so blest! All bottles should be turned in by the end of the month. Words cannot express how generous this parish is to the women and babies who will benefit from your warm, loving and generous hearts! God is surely smiling on you all! Food Pantry Unbelievable, dear Parishioners, you did it again, surpassing last week's food contribution. More than an additional 1000 pounds of food was delivered by Carol McClymont (5 Car Loads) to Project Love Pantry. In fact, we have not unpacked all those bags, as our shelves are full. 5 Parish Life Parish Life News Are you trying to figure out a way to help our parish when you have very limited time? How about enjoying a meal at Amarillo Roadhouse, in Schererville, from 11 to 4:00 PM any Sunday in October. 15% of your bill will be donated back to our parish. You must present the Amarillo Roadhouse coupon when ordering. Coupons can be found in the October newsletter & in the back of the church. With the direction and enthusiasm of Linda Abbott, 16 teams participated in our first Trivia Night at the Knights of Columbus. First prize went to Mike and Diane Abbott, Shawn Kirby, Tom Schell and Kevin O'Brien and second prize went to Judy and Dan Roper, Dale and Cindy Sjoerdsma and Rick and Joanne Besich. Over $1,300 dollars was raised for the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all for the tremendous support in this endeavor. A Personal Invitation Holy Name is extending a personal invitation to all our new parishioners, as well as our long standing members, to join us in the lectoring ministry. We offer training, support and encouragement to anyone who feels the call to serve in the reading of The Word at Mass. As Father indicated at the welcoming dinner, this can be YOUR opportunity to become a functioning part of our parish family and gain ownership to our community. Scheduling can be at your choice, i.e. monthly, alternating Masses or weekends. We are flexible in every way. Grief Support Group Our Grief Support Group offers a safe and friendly environment where all are welcome as we gather together to share our pain and sorrow. Even if you are not ready to share, you can experience the peace of being with others who accept and support the wide range of emotions that you are experiencing. We ask those who have journeyed through loss and grief to please consider joining us to share your personal experience as support members. We meet September through May on the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of the month from 6:30~8:30 PM. Sessions have resumed. All are welcome. Foresters Celebrate Anniversary Our Lady of Help Court #865 of the National Catholic Society of Foresters will be hosting an anniversary party. Mass will be celebrated here at Holy Name at 5 PM on Saturday, November 2. Celebrating 70th anniversary's are Nancy Culver, Lorraine M. Harper, Judith Lueder, and Agnes Moffett. We will be going to Dick's Restaurant after the All Soul's service in the Cemetery.
