Gospel Reflection July 14, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dt 30:10 14; Ps 69:14, 17, 30 31, 33 34, 36, 37 Col 1:15 20; Lk 10:25 37 The Book of Deuteronomy, presented as a collection of farewell speeches given by Moses to the Israelites just before his death, serves as a source of legislation for biblical Israel. Deuteronomy means second law ; the book is a second edition of the Law found earlier in the Torah. In today s reading Moses exhorts the people to keep the Law, which is not too mysterious and remote. This Law is to be internalized, not written on stone tablets but in your mouths and in your hearts. Writing to the Colossians, Paul calls Christ the firstborn of all creation. Christ reconciled us to God by the blood of his cross, and so we share in the promise of the new life given in the resurrection. As head of the body, the church, Christ sanctifies us by his blood. Because of this we share in his life. Sharing in that life, we must strive to conform our lives more fully to his by loving our neighbor. The scholar of the law who questions Jesus in today s Gospel knows the answer to his own question; he questions Jesus to test him. The commandments calling us to love God and love our neighbor are central to the practice of the Law of Moses and were taught as such for centuries. The question of the identity of one s neighbor is another issue. For some, the word only referred to fellow Israelites; for Jesus, anyone who is in need is our neighbor. The scholar would not consider a Samaritan someone detested by the Jews as his neighbor. Samaritans were so despised that even after Jesus s parable, the scholar still doesn t use the term; he merely calls him the one who treated him with mercy. For reflection: Is God s law something internalized in my life, or is it a set of rules found in a book on a shelf? Is there a neighbor in my life whom I need to love in a better way? What prevents me from loving as I should?

In the past year we have read a book and watched a video series on Vatican II, gone on a field trip to hear a speaker on St. Hildegard of Bingen and attended the opening of the new Strack and Van Til in Cedar Lake. We have future plans for a pontoon boat ride and a video series entitled, "Mining the Meaning of the Bible." Sessions begin at 9:15-9:30 in the Faith Formation Office. 5 Parish Life This 4th of July, Holy Name parish took 1st place in our category in the Cedar Lake parade. There were over 60 people who participated by either sitting on our float or walking. A special thanks to Deacon Tom and Nancy and Bill Kozlowski for decorating the float. Next year, our goal is to have 100 people represent our parish in the parade! Great job to all who participated! Community Garden News Peace & Justice The Volunteer Gardeners hosted an exciting visit from the KAM Isaiah Israel Community Garden volunteers based in Chicago. The gardeners shared ideas to increase vegetable productivity, ways to harvest and distribute produce and spoke about permaculture gardening which combines natural and edible landscaping. Thanks to Fr. Ed and Nan Onest for welcoming our visitors, to Bill Koslowski and Doris Mager representing the Pastoral Council, and to our garden volunteers who worked so hard to prepare our garden for this visit, Clarence Klaas, Bob Grega, Diane Jostes, Dick Kutchek, Anita Torok, Monie and Jim Wendlinger, Mary Lanham, Anne Yearsich, and Tom MacDonald. We have distributed our Lettuce for the season and have now planted Gladiola bulbs which will be used to decorate our altar later in the season. Produce and herbs from the garden were donated to St. Monica s Home Dyer. Visit the garden during the annual Parish Picnic Sunday July 28th. Tomatoes, Zucchini, Squash, Pumpkins, Peppers, Beans, Onions, and many types of Herbs are growing. All these plants were donated by the parishioners. Our produce supports local families and homes in the community. Upcoming events: July 18 th 6:30 PM Gardening Series, Highland Library. Master Gardener Larry Anderson will present a program on composting. Protect the planet! FREE. August 2 11 th. 10 AM to 9 PM Master Gardener Booth at the Lake County Fair. Admission is FREE before 3 PM Monday through Thursday. Master Gardeners are on hand to answer questions about your garden problems.

6 Parish Life There will be outdoor Masses in the yard again this summer. The Masses will be on Wednesdays and will begin at 6 PM. The host will provide the main food dish along with beverages. The guests are asked to bring a side dish veggie or dessert and lawn chairs.
