Gospel Reflection October 2, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 5:1 7; Ps 80:9, 12 16, 19 20; Phil 4:6 9; Mt 21:33 43 Paul suffered in the dark confinement of prison, yet the light of God s peace, not his jailers, stood guard over him. Because Paul rose above his sufferings, he could urge his community to unlock their prisons of fear and anxiety by filling their minds and hearts with everything that was virtuous and worthy of God s praise. By living fruitful lives according to what they were taught, God s peace would be with them. Then, no matter what fleeting circumstances they endured, they would be free like Paul. Jesus told another parable, which echoed Isaiah s Song of the Vineyard. In the allegory, God was the rightful owner of the vineyard, the kingdom of peace and justice. God sent numerous messengers to teach the people the truth, but most of them were persecuted and killed. Like the prophets before him, Jesus suffered the same fate for his fidelity to God s word. Because those who rejected him and put him to death were unproductive vines, the vineyard would be handed over to others who would bear good fruit and give God the produce at harvest time. For Reflection: Is my life fruitful or barren? How can I be a more productive laborer in God s vineyard? Thank you for Helping Project Love Since January 2011 Project Love food pantry has served 1,142 families (3,631 people). Thanks to everyone who has brought in groceries and monetary donations to help restock the shelves at Project Love. Additional donations are always welcome. Thank you for your continued generosity and kindness. Waterproofing work continues on the southwest corner of the church. Dur- ing this construction, the elevator will not be available. Opportunity for Server Training Server Training will be today, Saturday, October 1st after the 5 PM Mass in church. If you are interested in becoming a server, please be sure to be at this training. Generations of Faith Our next Generations of Faith session will be Sunday, October 16th after the 9 AM Mass and Monday, October 17th at 6 PM. Our theme for the month will be the Feast of all Saints. We will talk about who the saints are, our patron saints and what the Communion of Saints is. This will prepare us for the Celebrations of Halloween, All Saints and All Souls on October 31st, November 1st and 2nd. Don t forget to bring your green Generations of Faith bag to carry home your materials and to have the first four chapters in the textbooks finished for those who have them. Generations of Faith is open to all members of the parish. It is an opportunity to meet new people in the parish, find out about the trends and changes in the church. deepen your prayer and faith life, and expand your knowledge of liturgy (Mass) and doctrine. Call or e- mail maustgen9092@att.net Faith Sharing Faith Formation Join us on Thursday 9:15 AM for lively talk on current events, new books, church topics and just "stuff." We begin around 9:15 and end when we feel we are done usually between 11:00-12:00. We will be reading "Approaching Eden" this fall, a book about the stories of the bible and modern culture. All adults in the parish are welcome. Come once a month or every week. We are very non-structured in terms of attendance. We meet in the Faith Formation Office of the Parish Center. If you are interested, please contact Jackie Holden jackieholden@comcast.net Baby Shower/ Baby Bottle Ministry An important part of healing for many men begins with a repentance of their role in the abortion and the failure to protect mother and baby from harm. This act of humility opens the door for them to acknowledge that they have lost a son or a daughter. We can help. October 21-23, Our new ministry will begin October 2 and end November 6. Empty Baby Bottles will be distributed at all Masses in October and bottles will be available at the entrance of church. While we are asking for your loose change to fill the bottles, we would truly appreciate cash or checks as well. The monies collected by the Peace and Justice Commission will be used to financially support women who have chosen NOT to abort. We support organizations such as the St. Monica Home in Dyer and The Answer for Pregnancy in Hobart. Donations of crocheted, knitted or sewn items will be appreciated. Always needed are clothing, wipes, formula, high chairs, car seats, diapers, hats, pacifiers, etc. We are praying for your support of this new ministry and for volunteers to distribute items donated, to collect bottles and make purchases. 5 Parish Life Evangelization News Several of our parishioners are residents in local nursing homes. In order to assure them of our prayers and care, we are planning a nursing home visitation ministry. For parishioners wishing to participate in this ministry or those just seeking information there will be a training and planning meeting on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 PM in the Rectory. Please contact Janine Yablonowski ( ) or the Parish Office if you wish to attend so we can prepare enough training material. We are excited about this new initiative and encourage as many of our parishioners as possible to help plan and receive training. Calling all Liturgical Ministers Are you interested in serving as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Usher, or Altar Server during Mass? You may Paul Kselman at pmkselman@comcast.net. The Art of Grace The Art of Grace, will be performed by Artistrings, Cello, Violin and Piano on October 2, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at St. John Parish. Quintessential classical and sacred music from Vivaldi, Bach, Handel and Mozart will wash over the assembly as one of Chicago's premiere string and piano ensembles, Artistrings, graces our Laudate Concert Series. The artists have appeared with major performers such as Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, The Three Tenors, Michael Buble and Natalie Cole. A free-will offering will be accepted and details can be found at on Facebook as Laudate Concert Series, or by calling (219) Remembering the Children Memorial Prayer Service The Diocese of Gary Office of Pro-Life Activities/ Elizabeth Ministry is sponsoring a Remembering the Children Memorial Prayer Service for anyone whose life has been touched by the loss of a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, or any other infant/ childhood death. This memorial service will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at the Providence Section of the St. John St. Joseph Cemetery, th Street, Hammond, IN at 10:00 AM. 6 St. Vincent depaul News: St. Vincent depaul The good news of this Gospel is that all we need to do is let God tend us and bring us to produce good fruit. All we need do is be faithful; God will take care of the rest. Please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and abandoned. If you know someone or a family who needs assistance, please have them call and leave a message. Someone from St. Vincent de Paul will contact them. St Vincent de Paul would like to thank all who participated or donated for the annual nationwide Friends of the Poor Walk at Lemon Lake last Saturday. We will report how much money was raised at this event in the near future. Temporary Closing of St. Clare s Kitchen Due to construction at Holy Name Church, St. Clare s Kitchen will be closed from Tuesday, October 11 thru Tuesday, November 8. We regret the inconvenience but work needs to be done on the heating and air conditioning systems. Reopening date is Tuesday, November 15. Lowell Adult Learning Center The Lowell Adult Learning Center offers classes to prepare for the GED, as well as the SAT and ISTEP. We also offer classes in Reading, Math, and Language to any adult who needs to brush up their skills. We are located in the Cedar Creek Community Center at 151 N. Fremont St. in Lowell. We will be having orientation Monday, September 26 from 1-3 PM, Tuesday, September 27 from 4-6 PM, Wednesday, September 28 from 1-3 PM, and Thursday, September 29 from 9-11 AM. The cost to register is a one time $20 fee.
