Gospel Reflection August 12, th Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Kgs 19:4 8;Ps 34:2 3, 4 5, 6 7, 8 9 Eph 4:30 5:2;Jn 6:41 51 Elijah was one of the great prophets of ancient Israel. He lived at a time when King Ahab and Queen Jezebel were trying to eliminate the worship of Yahweh from the land. In a great contest with the prophets of Baal (1 Kgs 18), Elijah was successful in proving the superiority of Yahweh and cut down the prophets of Baal with his sword. Because of this, he had to flee for his life, as Ahab and Jezebel wanted him dead. Coming to rest under a broom tree, he prays for death, but God sends him nourishment in the form of water and a cake, and he is encouraged to continue on his journey to the mountain of God. Previously God had provided nourishment for the prophet by sending ravens to bring him food (17:6). God never fails to provide for those who have faith. The writer of Ephesians counsels us to allow the gifts of the Holy Spirit to shine forth in our lives. As beneficiaries of God's graces, we are called to be kind, forgiving, and compassionate to each other. The gifts we have received we are called to give to others, being "imitators of God" (5:1). Comparing Christ's death to a burnt offering made in the temple, he says that Christ's offering was as a "fragrant aroma" (v 2). We should make our offerings acceptable to God as well. Like the crowd in the synagogue in Nazareth, the crowd in today's Gospel finds Jesus hard to accept as someone more than a carpenter. This is "Jesus, the son of Joseph" (v 42); they know him and his family, so they question, "How can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" John's church knows Jesus's true identity, and so for them this is an opportunity to learn more about Jesus. But for the opponents of Jesus and of John's church, it is a reason to reject Jesus. Jesus's words are difficult for them to understand as he presents himself as greater than the bread sent from heaven by God, and he tells them that they must eat his flesh and drink his blood in order to have life. For Reflection: What attitudes or actions in my life do I need to put away in order to be an "imitator of God"? Are there sayings of Jesus that I have a hard time understanding or accepting? What can I do about this?

Registration forms will be available in the back of church on the small table under the bulletin board as you are walking out the door. They are also available in the parish office during office hours. Please turn in to the parish office or drop in the Sunday collection basket with "GOF" written on the outside of the envelope. Registrations will be electronically sent out to all families who were registered last year for whom we have an . These can be returned electronically, but the payment will have to be mailed or dropped of at the parish office. All families who have children ready to prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation (Penance), Eucharist (Communion) or Confirmation must be enrolled in and attending GOF sessions for one year prior to preparation classes. We are busy preparing a year of topics that will tie into the elections in November, the Year of Faith, Vatican II documents and a real casket will be present for our discussion of the funeral liturgy. It is a big help for us if we get registrations in August so we can be better prepared. Please respond as soon as possible even if you can't pay the fee right away. You will be billed. For the Adults Our Thursday morning faith sharing group continues to discuss the bible readings of the new testament along with issues facing our church and our homes. All adults in the parish are welcome to stop by and see what we are about. We meet on Thursday AM and usually go to about 11:00 AM. No prior bible reading experience is necessary. Confirmation Faith Formation Please keep the Confirmandi of the parish in your prayers as they prepare to be confirmed on September 27th. They will be on retreat September 8th.

Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Cabbage, and Squash are currently being harvested. A special thank you to Diane Jostes and family and Michael Polak for their mid week harvest. We are looking for more volunteers to help with the weekly garden harvest. Every Sunday at 7 AM we harvest whatever vegetables are ready for the shut-in parishioners and soup kitchen. Join us at the Community Garden site behind the school. It will take less than an hour to harvest. Mark your calendar. Our next community garden meeting for all volunteers is Saturday, August 25th. We'll meet at the garden at 9 AM to weed and talk about fall harvesting. Our community garden needs a new shed to house tools and supplies. We are looking for volunteers to design and build this shed. We will provide all supplies for this project. If you enjoy working with tools and construction please call Anita Torok It s Time for Bowling Holy Name will once again be joining Holy Shepherd in a fall bowling league at Stardust in Dyer. Each team will consist of 4 bowlers. This league will bowl every other Sunday at 6:20 PM from Mid-September through the end of April. If you are interested in joining us, please call Maureen Steinberg at or me at steinbergshouse@comcast.net. All bowlers from last year should also let me know that they will be returning. I would like to know who wants to bowl by the end of August. The cost will be $12.00 per person, per bowling session. This does not include shoes. 6 St. Vincent depaul News: St. Vincent depaul Finance Collection July 29, 2012 In this Gospel we find that for Jesus, the cost is the cross. The love that Jesus reveals through the symbol of the cross is: self-giving, sacrificial, healing, forgiving, in solidarity with the weak, confident in the power of God. During the hot summer months many of the elderly, especially those who are sick, are not able to find relief from the heat. Please help the Society to bring respite and hope to them. On Saturday, Sept. 29th, the Society of St Vincent de Paul will be holding their annual nationwide Friends of the Poor Walk at Lemon Lake park. It is a wonderful opportunity to participate in an amazing event that helps so many. There will be event information and registration forms in the back of the church in the box located on the lower shelf of the missalette holder.
