He is one of the strongest prophets to denounce injustice. The people could hardly wait for the holy days to be over that we may sell our grain and fix the weights and measures for cheating. Though Israel is waiting for the Day of the Lord, Amos tells them that it will be a day of judgment and justice, not a day of joy, for God will punish them for their sins. The writer of First Timothy asks us to pray for everyone, for this is good and pleasing to God our savior, / who wills everyone to be saved. By praying for kings and for all in authority, we do God s will; when we pray for them, we cannot help but think of them in a different light. The understanding in early Christianity was that they should live as good citizens an extension of rules for conduct within a household. As all people are children of God, we are united as one family, and so we should live in all devotion and dignity. In a careful reading of today s Gospel, we see that the dishonest steward was commended not for his dishonesty but for acting prudently. The steward acts sensibly to secure his future. By lowering the amount each debtor owes his master, he gains favor with the debtors. In Jesus s comments following the parable, we hear him calling the disciples to have a similar sense. The children of this world / are more prudent in dealing with their own generation / than are the children of the light (referring to the Christians). This parable, addressed specifically to his disciples, teaches us that while we are citizens of heaven, we still have to deal with the realities of this world, and we should do this with the good sense of the steward. For reflection: What is my attitude toward the poor? Do I support a system that tramples on them or assists them?

The Prison Ministry is looking for volunteers to make a dozen cookies for delivery to the prison on October 12. There is a sign up sheet in the church lobby or you can call Deacon Tom at and leave a message. Faith Sharing Faith Formation As we begin a new school year, we also begin another year of Adult Faith Sharing on Thursday mornings in the Faith Formation Office at 9:15 AM. If you are interested in some good conversation and a little stretching of the knowledge of your faith, you are welcome to join us. Planning to Marry? The Diocese requires that couples begin preparing for their marriage in the church at least six months prior to their wedding date. Our Action for the month will help Deacon Tom with his prison ministry. Please take home the fall leaves coloring page insert to decorate as a family. You may include some of the suggested words of encouragement and hope that are listed below. Last year s Lenten decorating projects were really appreciated by the inmates. Many were astonished by the kindness shown to them by so many of you. Let s continue to remind them that they are in our thoughts and prayers. Please return all completed coloring pages to the designated box in front of church by Sun., Sept. 29. Here s a great tasting tomato spice muffin recipe from Country Woman that has a yummy spice flavor. The tomatoes keep it moist. Great way to eat your veggies! TOMATO SPICE MUFFINS 4 cups all-purpose flour 2 eggs 2 ½ cups sugar ½ cup butter, melted and cooled 2 teaspoon cinnamon 2 teaspoon vanilla 1 ¼ teaspoon baking soda 5 cups seeded quartered tomatoes 1 teaspoon baking powder ( about 6 medium ) 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup raisins 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon pepper Combine first nine dry ingredients, set aside. In a food processor combine the eggs, butter, vanilla and tomatoes. Cover and process until tomatoes are finely chopped. Add to dry ingredients, stir just until moistened. Fold in raisins. Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups ¾ full. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans. Serve warm. Makes about 2 dozen. Tip: Freeze in heavy-duty resealable plastic bags. On busy mornings, pop in the microwave to warm. St. Ann s Church Bereavement Group Finding My Way Finding My Way, will begin October 3 (day) and October 10 (evening) and continue for 7 weeks each at St. Ann's, 3010 Ridge Road, Lansing, IL. Finding My Way, a support grief group, will be facilitated by Debbie Bona, Ministry Coordinator at St. Ann Parish, and a licensed and nationally certified counselor. The groups will be offered alternating Thursdays from 2-4 PM and from 7-9 PM at the Parish Office. You may come to both day and evening groups if you like. There is no registration and no fees for this group. If you have any questions, you can call Debbie Bona, at the Parish Office at , ext. 43.

5 Meals on Wheels Peace & Justice Prayer For Peace In Syria God of Compassion, hear the cries of the people of Syria, bring healing to those suffering from the violence, bring comfort to those mourning the dead, strengthen Syria's neighbors in their care and welcome for refugees, convert the hearts of those who have taken up arms, and protect those committed to peace. God of Hope, inspire leaders to choose peace over violence and to seek reconciliation with enemies, inspire the Church around the world with compassion for the people of Syria, and give us hope for a future of peace built on justice for all. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace and Light of the World, Amen. St. Vincent de Paul News The annual SVDP Walk for the Poor will be held again this year at Lemon Lake County Park on the 28th of September Anyone interested in walking can pick up forms after church in the back by the doors or see Kathy Bolger or Pat Wozniak. If you know of someone or a family who needs help, please have them call and leave a message. Someone from St. Vincent de Paul will return their call. Meals on Wheels seeks volunteer drivers to deliver hot nutritious meals to the homebound, elderly or disabled in your area and surrounding communities. Volunteers choose how frequently they wish to drive. The time commitment is just one hour to an hour and a half per delivery session. We also ask you to help us identify those in need of our services. Working together, we can improve the quality of life for our most vulnerable senior citizens. 6 Parish Life The bottles for the Baby Bottle Ministry will be available for pickup after Masses the weekends of Sept and Sept (if available). Please consider the struggles of being a single, teenage parent as you take the bottle home. It can be a wonderful teaching tool for your children in many areas and open conversations regarding the sanctity of life. Keep your bottle until it is full (coins, cash or checks made out to the chuaarch), pray for these women daily and return all the bottles at the end of October. Volunteers will be available for returned bottles before every Mass in October. ALL bottles should be returned (full or partially full) at the end of October.
