2 Holy Name Newsletter Download Our New Parish App! At Holy Name we are pursuing new opportunities to foster a stronger parish life and better engage the New Evangelization. As a part of these efforts we are happy to announce that Holy Name now has it s own App for Apple and Android phones. Our new App will allow us to send you useful and important messages throughout the week regarding our parish life and events, and allow you to reply to messages or RSVP for events. There will be no need for parishioners with smart phones to remember to silence their phones before Mass. The App will send you a reminder to silence your phone 20 minutes before the Mass you select. We cover current events, hot topic issues in the church, new (and old) DVD releases on church topics and never is there any such thing as a stupid question! He is the son of Richard and Susan Sheehy. Joe followed his dream and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He graduated from bootcamp in San Diego, California, in June of 2014 and completed his Combat Training at Camp Pendleton. Joe graduated from his MOS school at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri, as a Heavy Equipment Engineer. In October of 2014, he reported for duty at Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan. Joe currently holds the rank of Private First Class. Thank you for your continued prayers. Page 3

5 Holy Name Newsletter Paint the Town Ladies, mark your calendar for Friday, April 17th at 6:30 PM for an exciting night out with other women in our Parish. Parish Life will be hosting our second annual painting party for women only. Paint the Town Chicago will provide guidance with our painting experience, while we enjoy appetizers. Cost of the event will be $35.00 which will cover the cost of your painting. The reservation deadline is April 10th. Unfortunatley, you cannot participate without an advanced purchase of a ticket so call Robert Allan at to reserve a spot. It should be a great time in the gym! Holy Name Cemetery Walks (continued from last year) Our October Generations of Faith session took a trip to the cemetery! Great fun was had by all while studying about the people on whose shoulders we stand. Our topic of study was The Communion of Saints: God s holy gifts for God s holy people. Now that the weather is getting nice, you might want to take a walk with your family, watch for the budding trees and the greening grass and enjoy our beautiful cemetery. Here are a few graves you might want to check out. Millie and Andrew Huseman Center Row 3 Graves Millie and Andrew had a farm on 141 st Ave where their son Kenny and his wife Pat now live. Millie was a big part of the fish fries and dinners that took place at Holy Name among various other committees and projects. John and Charlotte Justak Northwest Row 1 Graves 3 & 4 John and Charlotte ran a farm, had a trucking business and were very active volunteers at Holy Name. In the 1940 s they had an ice cream party for the people of the parish in a time when this was unheard of! Ice cream was expensive and hard to keep frozen. Einsele Family Southeast 3 & 4 The Einsele family built the hotel that was later sold to the Franciscans and referred to as the Upper House. Many of our parishioners attended Mass there until it was closed and eventually torn down. Josephine and Frank Wachter Southwest Row 1 Josephine and Frank were a farming family. They moved from the farm to Cook. They are responsible for the Shrine on US 41 being built. That was their land. They still have family in the area. Joseph and Herbertine O Dea Northeast Row 4 Graves 18 & 19 Owned a furniture store where Walgreens now sits. (It was the Heritage Restaurant in between those times). Joseph sold insurance and Herbertine was a member a small theater group. Joseph spent much of his time volunteering at the church. Joseph was also involved in the incorporation of the town of Cedar Lake. Fr. Joseph Wonderly Center 1 Fr. Wonderly was a priest here at Holy Name from January 1943 until he retired in He is one of five pastors buried here at Holy Name. Fr. Wonderly attend St. Joseph s College and Mount St. Mary s Seminary in Cincinnati and was ordained June 10, Fr. Wonderly witnessed the marriage of Woodie Guthrie (This Land is Your Land) to his first wife, Mary Jennings. He is the longest serving priest at Holy Name He built the new school in 1956 and a new convent in Page 5

6 Holy Name Newsletter Prayer Shawl Ministry We are always looking for more volunteers to join The Prayer Shawl Ministry. You can knit, crochet or weave items at home and drop them off at the rectory. Feel free to use any pattern of your choice, or we can offer you pattern ideas. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call Anita at or Mary at and we will be happy to talk with you. Please consider being a part of this very rewarding ministry. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on the first Monday of each month. The next meeting will be April 6 at 11 AM in the Rectory. All are welcome.
