Stewardship of Forming Why is formation important? Because... The work of the Holy Spirit within the Christian community forms the person as a disciple of Christ. You see, as community, we re all tools and instruments in the hands of the Holy Spirit. If we re not properly formed, our effectiveness will be dulled. We ll have missed our opportunity to cooperate with the Spirit. The challenge for us today is - what are we doing to be an effective tool in the hands of the Spirit? Stewardship Reflection on this Week s Scriptures The First Reading from the prophet Ezekiel tells of how Ezekiel was called by God. The Lord speaks to him and says, Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you. God knew He was not giving Ezekiel an easy task, but that is part of what being called by the Lord sometimes involves. Being called is something to which we often make reference, as each of us is called in Baptism. St. Paul once wrote that we are called to belong to Jesus Christ. The United States Bishops issued a document a few years ago titled Disciples Called to Witness. That is what we are all to do as baptized Catholics. In that treatise the Bishops say, To create a culture of witness, we must live explicit lives of discipleship. Being a disciple is a challenge. Fortunately, one does not become a disciple of Christ on his or her own initiative. The work of the Holy Spirit within the Christian community forms the person as a disciple of Christ. (my emphasis). God does not forsake us when we are called, just as He did not abandon Ezekiel. He is with us through the Holy Spirit to strengthen us and assist us. We must allow the Lord to help us. At the same time, we must strive to be disciples of the Lord. We are called to spread the light of the Gospel in everything we do. -Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. Stewardship of Forming Small Christian Communities (aka SCCs) Fr Bing started to develop a plan for implementing SCCs across the parish almost 2 years ago. We now have 13 communities and close to 140 members gathering regularly. It s a good start, but there s opportunity for so many more parishioners. SCC s are not Bible studies. They are communal prayer, reflection and discussion based on the coming weekend s Gospel reading. Through group discussion SCC members will find their spiritual life and understanding of scripture will be greatly enhanced. It is prayer, formation and community all rolled up in one convenient package! Communities are formed based on location (there s a preference to have neighbors gathering with neighbors) and schedule availability. Gatherings are rotated through members homes according to the times and frequencies determined by each SCC s members. Typically weekly or biweekly for 60 and 90 minutes. Even if this doesn t sound like your cup of tea, I urge you to prayerfully consider giving them a try. If you want to join a community or have any questions at all please feel free to contact me. 5 D I S C I P L E S H I P p. 5 Ministry Spotlight We are truly blessed at St Rose and Good Shepherd. So many of our parishioners give freely of their time, talents and treasures. As a community it s important for us to put a name to a face and hopefully gain a little insight into why they serve the parish as they do. Over the last couple weeks, I ve been gently twisting arms of these parish servants, asking them to share a little bit about themselves and the ministry that they serve and lead. We have our first fruits below and I hope to continue to share new ministries and leaders once or twice a month. *** Welcome Ministry Cindy Follensbee and I (Paula Brown) have Co Chaired the Welcome Ministry for 7 years. I have been an active member of this ministry for at least 10 years. My husband, Dorian, and I moved here from Denver, CO 11 years ago and have been active members of St. Rose serving on several ministries. Cindy and her husband, Mike, joined the parish about 8 years ago and are also active in several Ministries. This particular ministry has been very near and dear to our hearts, for we feel, as our St. Rose Parish Mission states, we are a welcoming and joyful community and our ministry strives to make all who attend St. Rose a special part of our Parish family. Five scheduled Welcome Reception Luncheons are held each year. Our committee (pictured below) sends out s and makes phone calls welcoming new members on a weekly basis. We set up, bring food items, clean up and visit with each and every one of our new parishioners who attend the receptions. Our ministry also provides Welcome Folders and a Welcome Reception gift bag to each family that attends. Occasionally we assist other ministries in planning and providing help, with food and other needs at special events held at our parish throughout the year. 6 FAITH FORMATION p. 6 Safe Environment Training Together, we can protect our minors and vulnerable adults, not only here at Church but in society at large. St. Rose is presenting Protecting God s Children for Adults, a program for all employees and volunteers that have not previously completed the foundation Safe Environment Training. This program will educate and empower adults about how to help identify and prevent abuse. This training is mandatory for all employees and volunteers who have not preciously attended the foundation class. To register for a class, please go to choose a training session, and register.
