I suggest that we focus on the central themes that Pope Francis has laid out for us: living out both the mercy and justice of the Father by practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy As a reminder, the corporal works of mercy are: To feed the hungry; To give drink to the thirsty; To clothe the naked; To shelter the homeless; To visit the sick; To visit prisoners; To bury the dead. The spiritual works of mercy are: To teach people who are uninformed; To counsel those who have doubts; To help people who sin; To be patient with others; To forgive people who hurt you; To comfort people who suffer; To pray for the living and the dead. Bishop Hying invites everyone to a special Eucharist on Sunday, December 20 at 2 PM at the Cathedral as we open the Holy Door for this Year of Mercy. This door symbolizes Christ as the sacred portal through which we enter into the fullness of the Father s merciful heart. We are hoping there will be representatives from each parish to truly make this a diocesan celebration. Here at Holy Name we have added special services to help us celebrate this Year of Mercy. The First Sunday of Each month December November PM Chaplet of Divine Mercy March 4-5 There will be all night Confessions and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament More details to follow. Please spend some time praying about how your family might practice the works of mercy.

2 Holy Name Newsletter Holy Name Celebrates.. Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass Sunday, December 6 The doors open at 5:00 PM. Aztec dancers, and a Mariachi band will begin at 5:30 PM. Hearty Refreshments will follow at 7 PM in the church basement. Come join us for an evening of Vibrant festivity. All are welcome!! The 28th Annual Giving Tree Project is about to begin. On Saturday, November 28 th volunteers are needed to prepare the tags for parishioners to take beginning after the masses Thanksgiving weekend. Volunteers will meet in the church basement at 10:30 AM. Please help us make the Giving Tree project successful by taking tags from the Giving Tree located at the entrance of the church. If you could please purchase one or two items listed on the tags and return them, gift wrapped with the tag on them, no later than Monday, December 14th. Donations of non-perishable food items are also being collected. Monetary donations are also welcome. The Giving Tree deliveries will take place on Sunday, December 20th. Volunteers are needed on Sunday, December 20th beginning at 8:30 AM to sort, pack, wrap and deliver the food and gifts. The Giving Tree is a great project for the whole family. We all have family traditions that fill our memories with fond and familiar, warm and wonderful good times shared with people we love. Consider making the Giving Tree project a new tradition for your family. Volunteers may either call Mary Lanham at (219) or Carol Johnson at (219) th Annual Giving Tree Holy Name Hispanic Ministry invites you to join them for LOS POSADAS Nightly from December beginning at 7 PM in the Gym (December 16 & 19 will be in the church basement) There will be an indoor procession, praying of the rosary, music, hearty refreshments and a piñata. The strips need to be turned in by December 12, 2015 so they can be assembled and placed on the tree at the December 15 th meeting. EVERYONE is welcome to join us in December to assemble the chains and/or to make an ornament. Our group meets the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesday of the month at the parish office from 6:30 ~ 8 PM. The Diocese requires that couples planning to marry begin their preparation with the church at least six months in advance. We have recently received this thank you: Dear Members of Holy Name Church: Thank you for your kindness during this time of sorrow. My family and my church family appreciate your support and your warm thoughts through this devastating loss. It is not only my faith that sustains me, but also the caring gestures of people like you. Your card was truly appreciated and I hold you dear in my heart. Thank you for taking the time to reach out and offer solace to my family. It is my plan to continue my husband s legacy of service to others through the Honorable Reverend Clementa Pickney Foundation. The foundation will support causes and organizations that were important to Clementa, and in doing so it will uplife many citizens in South Carolina and also shine a light on inequalities across our state. Yours in Christ, Jennifer Pickney Dish Cloth Stocking Stuffers Available Now Caps For Kids The Northwest Indiana Catholic newspaper is accepting donations of new or handmade winter caps, gloves, mittens, and scarves for its 18th annual Caps for Kids campaign. These donations are sorted and distributed to area needy by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, social service agencies, and other groups. Monetary donations also help in the purchase of these items. Donations are being accepted through December 18 at the Pastoral Center, 9292 Broadway, Merrillville, IN Call x249 or seuvino@dcgary.org for more details. The members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry have been busy making festive color dish cloths. These hand made, cotton, dish cloths make great stocking stuffers, and are available in the Parish Office at the bargain price of 2 cloths for $5.00. Get your supply while they last. After the holidays, we will be sending out surprise packages to these very special individuals. Questions, please contact Amy Wilk at Parish Life Trivia Wrap up Trivia Night was a huge success again this year with $2,158 being raised for Project Love Food Pantry. From naming melodies from the past to current events, each team strived to be the smartest. 6 Holy Name Newsletter Youth Group Activities Youth Group welcomes you to participate in these holiday activities. All activities will take place in the School. Dec. 5th 6-8 PM- Christmas Party and preparing packages for our Military Personal of the Parish. Bring a White Elephant gift wrapped for gift exchange. Dec. 12th 6-8 PM Planning and preparing for programs offered for the children over the Christmas Holiday, see below. Dec. 20th at 10 AM Youth will assist with the delivering of Poinsettias to our Parishioners. Dec. 21st from 9 AM~3 PMChristmas VBS - Open to pre-schoolers to 4th Grade. The day will include; crafts, games, gift making for love ones, music, and creating Christmas treats. A light snack and lunch will be served. Cost: $5.00. Pre teen and Teens are needed to supervise. If you are interested in assisting contact Mary Joan Dickson Dec. 22nd from 6 9 PM Last Minute for Mom, to accomplish a few preparations for the holidays. Open to all children ages 3 and up. Christmas Movies and Crafts. Children may arrive in their pajamas and bring along a blanket and pillow. Snacks will be served. Cost: $3.00. Pre teen and Teens are needed to supervise. If you are interested in assisting contact Mary Joan Dickson Dec. 28th and 29th Open Gym for HS and College Age from 6-9 PM. Gather with friends and get a little exercise in during the holiday. January 2nd - Free Ice Skating at Midwest, call to register. You must rent or bring your ice skates. You must register by December 30th at 4 PM. New Parishioner Dinner The New Parishioner Gathering was hosted on Saturday, Oct 24th. Over 125 parishioners attended to welcome and spend time with the 18 new parishioners who were able to attend. There was plenty of food and fellowship for all who attended. A special thanks to Shirley Manning and her team of volunteers for hosting this event. We welcome our new members and look forward to seeing the wonderful contributions they will provide to our Parish. Page 6
