10 Page 10 Advent: A Time of Joyful Anticipation In the Catholic Church, Advent is a time of anticipation that begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. The word Advent means to come and during Advent we anticipate: Christ s coming at Christmas Christ s coming into our lives through grace and the Eucharist Christ s second coming at the end of time Throughout Advent, we are on a spiritual journey that connects us to Christ s past, present, and future coming. We remember Christ s coming into the world and yet we long for the day when Christ will come again to set the world right. In this sense, Advent reminds us that the kingdom God is both already and not yet. Advent is also a time when we become acutely aware that church and the world are at odds with each other; the church gifts us Advent as a time of prayerful preparation, while the world whips us into a frenzy of pre-christmas preparation. The words of John the Baptist urge us to prepare the way - to make our hearts, minds, and souls ready for Christ - but we strain to hear his voice amid all the hustle and bustle of the world. In modern times, Advent is celebrated as a time for prayerful joy and happy anticipation instead of a time for penitence and fasting. Our understanding of Advent may have changed over the years, but our Advent prayer has remained unchanged since the beginning of time. As we wait and yearn for Christ to come again and bring peace, justice, and righteousness to the world, we pray much the same as the Israelites in the Old Testament did: O come, O come Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel German Advent Traditions Holy Name parish was founded in 1859 by German settlers from the Hanover region of Germany and many of our current Advent traditions originated in Germany. You may recognize the following Advent traditions that have their roots in German culture and have been adopted by many cultures throughout the world. Advent Calendar Advent Calendars originated in Germany in the early 1800 s. The purpose of an Advent calendar is to count down the days until Christmas. The earliest known example of the modern Advent calendar was handmade in Germany in But the tradition goes back even further - with families using chalk to make marks on their doors in anticipation of Christmas. Modern Advent calendars are usually made out of heavy card stock and have little windows with a piece of chocolate hidden behind each window. A new window is opened every day. This is a wonderful tradition to make a part of your Advent celebration and to share with your children or grandchildren. Advent calendars are inexpensive and Aldi stores carry them for a few dollars apiece. Advent Wreath The Advent wreath is another familiar tradition that began in Germany. The four candles on or around the wreath symbolize the four weeks before Christmas. If you don t already have an Advent Wreath, you can create one very easily. All you need is an evergreen wreath and four pillar candles. Place the wreath on a table and set the candles in the middle of the wreath. Most Catholics use three purple candles and one rose-colored candle. The first candle is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, two are lit the second Sunday of Advent, and so on St. Nicholas Day, December 5th St. Nicholas Day traditions are found throughout Europe. Although celebrating St. Nicholas Day did not originate in Germany, there are several traditions associated with St. Nicholas Day that are unique to the Germanic and Scandinavian peoples. One such tradition is that an item such as a shoe, boot, sock, plate, etc.. is put out on the evening before St. Nicholas day and, at some point in the night, St. Nicholas (or one of his assistants) comes and places treats and small gifts in the items left out - kind of like a mini-christmas to help us anticipate and prepare for the real Christmas to come.
