1 Holy Name Newsletter Volume 12, Issue 6 Parish Office Evening & Sunday Hours Second Wednesday of the Month from 6:30-8 PM AND Fourth Sunday of the month from AM June 2012 Planting Day May 19, 2012 The Holy Name Community Garden is planted and growing! In fact, we will be adding four more rows of vegetables this week! It is not too late to sign up to help. We need volunteers to help tend the garden every day of the week during the growing season. We will be setting up a Holy Name Community Garden Facebook group for all of our volunteers to communicate with each other as well as a webpage to keep parishioners and friends updated. Thank you to all of the volunteers who came out on Saturday. We planted the entire garden in less than two hours! An extra thanks to: Rosemarie Ruffing for her work in planning the garden and Jim Metro and Greg Wornhoff for soil preparation and layout.

Cantors are those singers who, through personal prayer and preparation, provide leadership and inspiration for the song of the assembly. What do Cantors do? Cantors announce music, invite the assembly to sing, and provide a sense of pitch and rhythm. Cantors need to be skilled singers, just as Ministers of the Word need to be skilled at reading in public. To sing well is very important, but it is not enough. Cantors have to be ministers, or servants, of the worshipping assembly as well. They do not perform for the entertainment of those present, but provide leadership and encouragement to enable the members of the assembly to sing the responses, acclamations and songs of the liturgy. (adapted from Ministers of Music, Liturgy Lines, 3/21/2004, Liturgical Commission Archdiocese of Brisbane) Who can become a Cantor? An individual who is able to sing well and lead the assembly in song; training is provided. What are the responsibilities of a Cantor? Attend their scheduled masses Attend monthly Cantor meetings Participate in periodic Cantor training sessions/workshops Rehearse music prior to their scheduled mass Effectively lead the assembly in song For More Information: If you would like more information on becoming a cantor, please contact Cindy Foreman at (219) or jbh4545@aol.com Additional Resources: For more information on the ministry of the Cantor, please visit the following links:
3 Page 3 Welcome Welcome to our newest parishioners who were recently initiated into our Christian Family here at Holy Name by Baptism: Madeyln Rayner, Daughter of Joshua & Jessica Matthew Gerloff, Jr., Son of Matthew & Jennifer Kailyn Mish, Daughter of Brian & Kylee Mason Boilek Son of Matthew & Laura Alexa Shannon, Daughter of Jeff & Kassandra Anneliese McCoy, Daughter of Michael & Kristen Beckham Barks, Son of Branon & Katie Alexis Milton, Daughter of Joshua & Melissa Ella Adams, Daughter of Ryan Adams & Colleen Vanco Catholic Service Appeal (CSA) On the weekend of April 14-15, 2012 we began our Catholic Service Appeal drive here at Holy Name Parish. Our goal this year is $39,780.00, set by the Diocesan Finance Office. Any funds over the goal are returned to the Parish. This has become our most profitable fundraising activity. For those who have already participated in the appeal, thank you. For those who are considering an amount, we appreciate your generosity. As our parish grows, we pray that the participation in this important diocesan appeal will continue to grow. With everyone s help we will not only reach out goal but exceed the goal to the benefit of our parish family. May God bless the work of our hands and the generosity of our hearts.

Your nickel, dime, or quarter is multiplied by the coins placed by others in the St. Vincent de Paul envelopes. May your heart be glad because of your almsgiving. A sincere thank you! Since we last reported, we were able to help families with $49.66 in food assistance, $ in Nipsco assistance, $200 in gas assistance, and $ in travel assistance. If you know someone or a family who needs help, please have them call and leave a message. Someone from St. Vincent de Paul will return their call. New Parishioners Jaclyn Higginbotham Norma & Bernice Jones Wesley Pratt Susan Stinson We Remember Our Dearly Departed Ralph Klaas Prayer Shawl Ministry The next Prayer Shawl Ministry meeting will be on Monday, June 4 at 11 AM in the Rectory. All meetings have now been moved to 11 AM on the first Monday of the month in the Rectory. New members to this ministry are always welcome. We are grateful to the many parishioners who have delivered shawls to friends and loved ones in the name of our community. Do you know someone who might like a prayer shawl? You can stop in the rectory any weekday to pick one up. Shawls and lap robes will also be available in church on the first weekend of the month. You are invited to take one and write down the name of the recipient. All recipients are added regularly to our prayer list and we continue to pray for their health. Please watch for yarn bargains as you shop yard sales and flea markets. All donations will be put to good use and will be greatly appreciated.
5 Page 5 It s Time to Begin Building As we continue to grow in Christian service and witness, we are also growing in number. We are over 800 families! However, there are growing pains that accompany these developments. The amount of people work has grown. With the expansion of our staff and the increase in pastoral work, there is a need for additional space. Our present conference room is no longer sufficient. The number of people who meet there and the number of meetings held on a weekly basis have caused the Building and Grounds Committee as well as the Finance Committee and the Pastoral Council to look at the space needs in the rectory. Responding to my request on behalf of our Pastoral Council, Bishop Melczek has given our parish permission to build a one story addition on to the east side of the rectory with a full basement. The addition would be handicapped accessible with a ground level entrance, a kitchenette and bathroom. The room would be able to accommodate approximately 30 people. The basement would provide needed storage for the parish. We would then rearrange the office space on the first floor for a reception area, main office, an office for the pastoral associate and additional space for smaller group meetings. Our Buildings and Grounds Committee along with the Finance Committee and Pastoral Council have approved this project and will be monitoring expenses as we move forward. May God bless the work of our hands.
