1 Holy Name Newsletter Volume 11, Issue 9 September 2011 We pray for our fallen troops Parishioners of Holy Name Parish community pray weekly at our liturgy for those who serve in the armed forces, and are in combat in Afghanistan and elsewhere throughout the world. These prayers become more profound and poignant when people in our parish and our neighborhood are killed or injured in action. National Guard Spec. Augustus (Augy) Vicari was killed in Afghanistan on July 29. Augy is survived by wife, Holly, parents, Evelyn and Michael, two sisters, two brothers, grandmother and parishioner, Linda Slankard and great-grandmother, Bernice Slankard. Hundreds of family, friends and fellow soldiers attended the funeral service at Holy Name Church on August 9, He was buried with full military honors in the Parish cemetery. Veterans and friends lined the path to his final resting place. August 9, 2011 Photos by The Times of Northwest Indiana We join with those who mourn the loss of Augy Vicari. We continue to pray for all military personnel, especially those from our community. As we pray for their safety, we pray in earnest for an end to this war and all wars. We continue to pray for those in harm s way We share our concern and continue to pray for Joe Guerrero who was seriously injured in Iraq when a grenade was launched into the truck he was driving. Joe graduated from Hanover Central in June 2010 and left the same month for basic training. After being trained as a tank driver, Joe was sent to Iraq in May and celebrated his 21st birthday the first week of August. PFC Joe Guerrero is now back in the United States in an Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Your continued prayers and get well cards would be appreciated. Joe s address is: PFC Joe Guerrero. Brooke Army Medical Center, MCHE-DN-4W, 3851 Roger Brooke Drive, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas We pray for all of the men and women serving in the armed forces of our country, that they may return home safely and soon: Paul Armstrong, Joe Guerrero, Joe Letcher, Brian Pennel, Robbie Ribicki, Jill Sliger, Elliott and Justin Sprehe, Mike Wendlinger and Chris Willy.

Since January 2011 Project Love food pantry has served 1,142 families (3,631 people). The number of families seeking help from Project Love continues to grow and the supplies on the shelves continue to dwindle. Many clients are without jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. There is also a significant number of senior citizens (60+) who have reached out for help. We are grateful to everyone in our parish who makes it possible for Holy Name to continue to support Project Love financially and with many helping hands. And now we are putting out a special appeal asking for donations of nonperishable items and/or cash. Please drop your donations off in the church or rectory lobby. Checks may be made payable to Project Love or Holy Name Church. Thank you for your continued generosity and kindness. 5 P a g e 5 Stewardship and our Children Beginning on the 3 rd Weekend of September at the 5 PM mass on Saturday and the 9 and 11 AM masses on Sunday we will be inviting the children (5-12) of our parish to bring their own offering envelopes forward. The children with their offering envelopes will be invited to follow the gift bearers up to the front of the church and deposit their offering in the baskets that the ministers will be holding and then return to their families. This is just one way to teach our children about stewardship. St. Vincent depaul News School has begun and the kids are back in their classes. For some families, this time of the year is most challenging. St Vincent de Paul is here to assist people who may need help. Since we last reported, we have provided $ in rent assistance, $ in NIP- SCO assistance, $25.00 in gasoline assistance, and $40.00 car assistance. Without your help, we could not continue to assist others in need. We thank you for your support. If you know someone or a family who needs help, please have them call and leave a message. Someone from St. Vincent de Paul will return their call. At the end of this month, the Society of St Vincent de Paul will be holding their annual nationwide Friends of the Poor Walk. It is a wonderful opportunity to participate in an amazing event. Please join us on Saturday, Sept. 24th at Lemon Lake Park. To register as a walker, to pledge support for a walker, or for more information, please go to Questions, please call Kathy Bolger at or Shirley Mudy at We hope you consider participating. Generations of Faith It is that time again, school is starting, the days are getting shorter and it is time to register for a new season of Generations of Faith. A registration form can be ed to you or is available in the parish office. Remember that this year we are offering a high school breakout for both sessions and our night has changed from Wednesday to Monday. Sunday morning sessions begin after the 9:00 AM Mass till 12:30 and Monday evening runs from 6:00-8:30 PM. For those attending on Monday, we will begin the session at 6:15 PM instead of 6:30 after the meal so we can get the kids home for bed. Child care is available on Sunday mornings for preschoolers. Dates for this year are as follows: September 18 and 19 October 16 and 17 November 13 and 14 December 4 & 5 January 15 and 16 February 12 and 13 March 18 and 19 April 15 and 16 May 20 and 21 Any questions? Call or maustgen9092@att.net Generations of Faith is open to all members of the parish. It is an opportunity to meet new people in the parish, find out about the trends and changes in the church. deepen your prayer and faith life, and expand your knowledge of liturgy (Mass) and doctrine. If you are new and want to just check us out, the first session is free.

7 P a g e 7 Holy Name Fall Bowling League It's time to dust off those shoes and bowling balls! Holy Name will again be joining Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church of St. John in a fall bowling league at Stardust in Dyer. This is a non-sanctioned league -- just for fun. So no worries if you are not a bowler, or if you have never bowled before. The idea is just to have fun. Each team will consist of 4 bowlers. This league will bowl every other Sunday at 6:00 p.m. from Mid-September through the first week of May. If you cannot bowl on the appointed evening, you can either have a substitute bowl for you or you can "bowl out" any time before the next game. If you are interested in joining us, please call Maureen Steinberg at or at steinbergshouse@comcast.net. All bowlers from last year should also let me know that they will be returning. Baby Shower/Baby Bottle Ministry The Baby Shower ministry will be conducted for a 30- day period this year and hopefully, every year after to assist new mothers by providing those items necessary to start parenting off on a positive note. New clothing, diapers, bottles, formula, car seats, beds, and all baby supplies can be donated to support the several agencies in our area that nurture, counsel and educate pregnant women (often just teenagers) such as the St. Monica s Home, and The Answer for Pregnancy. A space for your donations will be available in the vestibule. Handmade items, i.e. quilts, blankets, layettes, etc. are most appreciated as your artistic creations provide love in a material way. We are supplying baby bottles to anyone interested in supporting this new ministry. By taking a bottle, you are asked to simply put your loose change in the bottle until it is full or until the end of our time period. Please note checks and cash are also accepted and are much easier to transport. All bottles should be returned (partial, full or empty) at the end of our time period. Having to buy new bottles each year is money that can be better spent elsewhere. Together we pray.. Sunday, September 11, 2011 Ecumenical Prayer Service At the new St. Michael the Archangel National Catholic Church 6629 W. 133rd Ave., Cedar Lake (Near Lemon Lake Park) 2 PM On this day we will have a special prayer service for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. We join with our neighbors and friends from Zion United Church of Christ, Cedar Lake United Methodist Church and St. Michael National Catholic Church for an afternoon of prayer and fellowship. Confirmation Retreat We are excited to have the opportunity to offer the second weekend retreat with St. John in preparation for the upcoming Confirmation celebration on September 20 at St. John. The final retreat will be September 10 & 11, While this is a different format than what we have used in the past, we truly believe this will be a very worthwhile experience for our young people. The retreats will take place here at Holy Name. St. John and Holy Name are both making changes so that we can best serve our youth in the most meaningful retreat experience possible. Please keep our 16 young people and St. John's 65 young people preparing for Confirmation in your prayers.
