Formerly called Eucharistic Ministers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are acolytes or lay persons who have been commissioned to distribute Holy Communion. The term "extraordinary" distinguishes such a person from the ordinary (normal, regular) minister of Holy Communion, namely a bishop, priest or deacon. What do Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion do? Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) present the Body and Blood of Christ to those who approach for Holy Communion. Their presence and prayerful preparation deepen the experience of the mystery of Christ present in this sacrament. EMHCs are properly formed, instructed, and commissioned lay persons. EMHCs may be male or female. They should reflect the cultural diversity of their parish community. EMHCs are appointed for a given parish community to aid in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass and to the sick and homebound when ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are unavailable. Who can become an EMHC? A Catholic living in harmony with the teachings of the Church and able to receive Eucharist. An individual of sufficient age and maturity to perform the duties of an EMHC at Mass or to the sick and homebound. What are the responsibilities of an EMHC? Be an active participant during Mass Attend their scheduled masses Attend periodic EMHC training sessions and meetings Participate in ongoing faith formation Who is our EMHC chair? Our EMHC chair is Ted Kawczynski. He is responsible for the recruiting, training, and scheduling of EMHCs. If you would like more information on becoming an EMHC, please contact Ted at (219) or tedkawczyncski@att.net The staff liaison for this ministry is Cindy Foreman (219) jbh4545@aol.com Additional Resources: For more information on the ministry of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, please visit the following links:

All meetings have now been moved to 11 AM on the first Monday of the month in the Rectory. New members to this ministry are always welcome. If you like to knit or crochet, but don t like meetings, we would be happy to have your finished shawls or lap robes. We are grateful to the many parishioners who have delivered shawls to friends and loved ones in the name of our community. Do you know someone who might like a prayer shawl? You can stop in the rectory any weekday to pick up a shawl or lap robe. Beginning May 5-6, shawls will be available in church on the first weekend of the month. You are invited to take one and write down the name of the recipient. All recipients are added regularly to our prayer list and we continue to pray for their health. As our parish grows, we pray that the participation in this important diocesan appeal will continue to grow. With everyone s help we will not only reach out goal but exceed the goal to the benefit of our parish family. May God bless the work of our hands and the generosity of our hearts.

Just notify the ushers upon entering the church before mass. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. More on Immigration from the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops Today s Immigrants are different than those of 100 years ago: The percentage of the US population that is foreign-born stands at 11.5%; in the early 20th century it was approximately 15%. Similar to accusations about today s immigrants, those of 100 years ago initially often settled in mono-ethnic neighborhoods, spoke their native languages, and built up newspapers and businesses that catered to their fellow emigres. They also experienced the same types of discrimination that today s immigrants face, and integrated within American culture at a similar rate. If we view history objectively, we remember that every new wave of immigrants has ben met with suspicion and doubt and yet, ultimately, every past wave of immigrants has been vindicated and saluted (Source: Census Data) Has immigration law changed over the years? Current immigration law has helped to create the present crisis. The problem is that current laws permit too few persons to enter to work or to be united with family members. The immigration system is broken and today s unrealistic low visa limits helps drive illegal immigration. The national economy requires more immigrant workers than are allowed to enter. The problem with not permitting access to work or to immigrate legally is that individuals are forced to stay once they make the treacherous trip here. Legal channel need to be widened to meet needs of today s realities. Moreover, families often have long waits, sometimes up to years to be reunited. For persons who desire permanent residence the time between application and admittance is unreasonable in many countries such as Mexico and those in Central America the wait is 5-10 years. Even an individual married to a US citizen with children must wait for years for their status to be clarified. Family reunification must be given greater priority. Catholic Charities Counseling The Counseling Program of Catholic Charities serves individuals, couples, families, and children. Minor stresses or major disruptions are helped through counseling and life management skills. Therapy is provided by experienced and licensed therapists. Daytime and evening hours are available. Call to schedule an appointment at any of the Catholic Charities locations. Catholic Charities Seeking Adoption Specialist Tootsie Roll Drive The Knights of Columbus will be holding their annual Tootsie Roll Drive the weekend of May 5 & 6. They will be on the street corners the morning of Saturday, May 5th. The Knights will also be available after the Masses that weekend accepting your donations in exchange for Tootsie Rolls. The funds raised through the annual Tootsie Roll Drive are used to help people with intellectual disabilities. Some Holy Name parishioners directly benefit from these funds. Funds from this drive will continue to support Arc/Bridges, South Lake County Special Olympics, Fr. Blaney's Share Foundation, and Downs Syndrome Association of Northwest Indiana. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Catholic Charities, Diocese of Gary is seeking an experienced Adoption Specialist to work with families, and birth mothers.
