Then when Christmas arrives, many people will be ready to throw out the tree, box up the decorations, and lock Christmas time back in the attic. Here are some ideas to help slow down the Christmas rush and give you and your family a chance to savor Advent which will make Christmas all the more special. Hanging of the Green Designate the first Sunday of Advent as the Hanging of the Green day. Decorate your home with evergreen boughs and greenery, but wait to hang the ornaments and light the lights until Christmas. Advent Wreath If you don t already have an Advent Wreath, you can create one very easily. All you need is an evergreen wreath and four pillar candles. Place the wreath on a table and set the candles in the middle of the wreath. Most Catholics use three purple candles and one rose-colored candle. The first candle is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, two are lit the second Sunday of Advent, and so on Some families have customs and traditions that go along with lighting the advent candles. You may want to say a prayer or a read a bible story like Mark 1:1-8 about John the Baptist when you light the candles. In my family, the Advent wreath was placed in the center of the dining room table and, after Sunday dinner, we lit the candles, had a short prayer time, and then ended our Advent celebration with dessert. The Nativity Scene The whole family can take part in setting up a Nativity Scene. Perhaps you already have a Nativity Scene, if not; your children could use their creativity to make one. Some families set up the empty crèche and have the Mary and Joseph figures far off traveling (perhaps in another area of the house) and their approach to Bethlehem is adjusted daily. Advent Calendar Although more popular in Europe than in the United States, Advent Calendars are a fun and meaningful way for families to celebrate Advent. Advent calendars are a way to countdown the days until Christmas. They are usually made up of heavy card-stock or cardboard and have numbered flaps which are opened (one per day) to reveal a piece of chocolate or candy. (So, you may need as many Advent calendars as there are chocolate lovers in your household!) One thing to note is that most Advent Calendars are numbered 1-24, so you would open the first flap on December 1 st. However, some calendars have as many as 31 flaps. If you are interested in making this a tradition in your home, check online for more information and even learn how to make your own Advent Calendar.

3 P a g e 3 Prayer for Leadership Give us, O God, leaders whose hearts are large enough to match the breadth of our own souls and give us souls strong enough to follow leaders of vision and wisdom. In seeking a leader, let us seek more than development for ourselves though development we hope for more than security for our own land though security we need more than satisfaction for our wants though many things we desire. Give us the hearts to choose the leader who will work with other leaders to bring safety to the whole world. Give us leaders who lead this nation to virtue without seeking to impose our kind of virtue on the virtue of others. Give us a government that provides for the advancement of this country without taking resources from others to achieve it. Give us insight enough ourselves to choose as leaders those who can tell strength from power, growth from greed, leadership from dominance, and real greatness from the trappings of grandiosity. We trust you, Great God, to open our hearts to learn from those to whom you speak in different tongues and to respect the life and words of those to whom you entrusted the good of other parts of this globe. We beg you, Great God, give us the vision as a people to know where global leadership truly lies, to pursue it diligently, to require it to protect human rights for everyone everywhere. We ask these things, Great God, with minds open to your word and hearts that trust in your eternal care. Amen. Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB Giving Tree The season of Advent is a time to get ready and build up the hope within our hearts for the promised coming of Jesus Christ. It is a time of joyful preparation when we are invited to draw close to others and remember those in need. In this spirit, we begin preparation of the 25th Annual Holy Name Giving Tree Project. Help us make our Silver Anniversary for the Giving Tree project another successful year. Please help by taking tags from the tree following masses beginning on Saturday, November 24 th. If you could please purchase one or two items listed on the tags and return them, gift wrapped with the tag on them, no later than Monday, December 10th. Donations of non-perishable food items are also being collected. Monetary donations are also welcome. The Giving Tree deliveries will take place on Sunday, December 16th. Volunteers are needed for preparation of the tags on Saturday, November 24 th at 10:00 a.m. in the Church basement. Volunteers are also needed on Sunday, December 16th beginning at 8:30 a.m. to set-up the gym, sort the food, pack, wrap and deliver the food and gifts. The Giving Tree is a great project for the whole family. We all have family traditions that fill our memories with fond and familiar, warm and wonderful good times shared with people we love. Consider making the Giving Tree project a new tradition for your family. Volunteers may call either Sue Smetana at (219) or Mary in the Parish Office at (219)

These items make for great holiday and hostess gifts. They are ideal for teachers and stocking stuffers. We will be selling before and after the GOF sessions. Anyone is welcome to come to the gym and shop. These products make a statement as they are both fair trade and organic- which means they are healthier for you, the environment and the people who produced them. Generations of Faith News Have you ever wondered what all the fuss was and is about Vatican II? Did something happen there besides the document that changed the way we celebrated our Sunday Mass? Our November Generations of Faith session on November 11 at 10:15 AM or November 12 at 6 PM will be on the Vatican II document Guadium et Spes - the Church in the Modern World. As we enter into the Year of Faith, join us as we revisit this document on the 50th anniversary of Vatican II. We will explore what the vision for the church is through the writers of this landmark document. All in the parish are welcome to join us! For those with textbooks, please have chapters 5-8 finished for the November session. Behind the Scenes at Vatican II Join us on Thursday mornings at 9:15 AM in the Faith Formation Office for a discussion on the happenings behind the Vatican II documents. 6 Page 6 What is the Spirituality and Worship Commission and what does it do? The Spirituality and Worship commission exists to help the people of our parish pray. They help the parish pray by subtracting the distractions and adding the artistry and polish that encourages people to lift up their hearts in praise. This commission is given, and accepts, a high degree of responsibility for the public worship of the community. As with other important matters, ultimate responsibility for worship resides with the pastor, but this commission exists to help him facilitate the community s prayer. 3 major functions of the Spirituality and Worship commission: 1. The most important function of the Spirituality and Worship commission is to enhance and improve the liturgical celebrations of our parish. A key responsibility of this group is to evaluate the liturgical life of the parish. Therefore, early and continuing input from representative members of the liturgical assembly is very important. The group meets monthly to evaluate what worked and what didn t throughout the various Church seasons. These evaluations are then used the following year to assist in the planning and preparation process. 2. Another major function of this commission is ongoing education about liturgy. The continuing education of the commission is essential and fruitful because it is meant to be shared with the parish. Members of this commission continually deepen their knowledge and understanding of liturgy. They periodically participate in courses, workshops, and conventions. Information and ideas from these learning activities are brought back to the parish and serve to enrich the prayer life of the parish family. 3. Finally, the Spirituality and Worship commission is entrusted with the coordination of liturgical ministries such as the lectors, ushers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers, musicians, cantors, sacristans, etc The quality of our parish s worship is in large part dependent on the ability of the various liturgical ministers to know what to do during mass and to do it well. There is much work done behind the scenes to recruit, train, and coordinate the various ministries. The commission has representatives from each liturgical ministry who act as the chairperson(s) for their ministry. These chairpersons assist in the recruiting, training, and coordination of their ministry. The ultimate goal of the Spirituality and Worship commission is to enable the full, conscious, and active participation of the entire parish. All of our lives, all of our prayer needs, find an echo in the liturgy we celebrate. The Spirituality and Worship commission strives to create a space in which each member of the parish family can approach the living God and receive the grace needed to live out their baptismal call.

7 Page 7 Prayer Shawl Ministry The next Prayer Shawl Ministry meeting will be on Monday, November 5th at 11 AM in the Rectory. New members to this ministry are always welcome. Anointing of the Sick Saturday, November 3 At the 5 PM Mass The Sacrament of the Sick will be offered on Saturday, November 3rd at the 5 PM Mass for all those who feel in need at this time. This would certainly include those who are physically, emotionally, or spiritually in need of healing as well as those who are on supportive medication or suffer from chronic health condition and those 65 years of age or older. All those in need of healing are welcome to receive this sacrament of the sick. We are grateful to the many parishioners who have delivered shawls to friends and loved ones in the name of our community. Do you know someone who might like a prayer shawl? You can stop in the rectory any weekday to pick one up. Shawls and lap robes will also be available in church on the first weekend of the month. You are invited to take one and write down the name of the recipient. All recipients are added regularly to our prayer list and we continue to pray for their health. Please watch for yarn bargains as you shop yard sales and flea markets. All donations will be put to good use and will be greatly appreciated. St. Vincent depaul News St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank all who participated and donated to the Walk for the Poor. It was a wonderful event and we thank you for your support. The money we raised from the walk will be used to help the less fortunate. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God's love and mercy by providing $ in NIPSCO assistance and $ in rent assistance. Thank you! If you know someone or a family that needs assistance, Please have them call and leave a message. Someone from St. Vincent de Paul will contact them.
