1 The Community of the Holy Name of Jesus Holy Name Mission Statement Holy Name Parish is a thriving Roman Catholic community that strives to create a welcoming atmosphere for many people from diverse cultures and various backgrounds. Using our time, talent and treasures, we are committed to responsible stewardship and financial accountability. Sunday, February 26, 2012 First Sunday of Lent We nourish our Catholic faith through our weekly sharing in the Eucharist; strengthened through intergenerational faith formation. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we dedicate ourselves to the service of those most in need, by being Disciples of Christ in the world.
2 Holy Name Parish February 26, 2012 Cedar Lake, Indiana First Sunday of Lent Liturgical Schedule Saturday, February 25 5:00 PM Steve Mathias Sunday, February 26 First Sunday of Lent 7:00 AM Beloved Deceased 9:00 AM Beloved Deceased 11:00 AM Intention of Parishioners Monday, February 27 Tuesday, February 28 Wednesday, February 29 7:00 PM At Friary ~ Beloved Deceased Thursday, March 1 Friday, March 2 Saturday, March 3 5:00 PM Beloved Deceased Sunday, March 4 Second Sunday of Lent 7:00 AM Beloved Deceased 9:00 AM Beloved Deceased 11:00 AM Intention of Parishioners Gospel Reflection February 26, st Sunday of Lent Gn 9:8 15; Ps 25:4 5, 6 7, 8 9; 1 Pt 3:18 22; Mk 1:12 15 After the biblical flood, God set a rainbow in the sky as a sign of God's covenant love. Peter, in his epistle, saw the flood as a metaphor for baptism, the pattern for our life in Christ. In this bath we drown to our former lives. Liberated from sin and death, which threatens to destroy us, we rise to a new life in Christ. The sacrament of baptism is not merely a physical cleansing; it is a spiritual purification of the whole heart, soul, and mind. In baptism, Jesus enters the waters of our corrupt state and rises victorious over the powers of evil. He emerges triumphantly to announce the good news of God's reign: "This is the time of fulfillment! Reform your lives!" The light of Christ pierces the darkness for all who walk in truth and love. For Reflection: When do the storms of life put me to the test? Where have I seen rainbows? 6 St. Vincent depaul News: St. Vincent depaul In today s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we continue to open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We would like to thank you for your tremendous support in our cry for food for Project Love this month. Without your help, many people would have been without. No words can adequately express our gratitude. We are waiting to help someone or a family who is out of work and needs assistance. Maybe they are experiencing a temporary setback. Please suggest to them to call and leave a message. Someone from our Society of St. Vincent de Paul will return their call.
