Gospel Reflection July 28, th Sunday Ordinary Time Gn 18:20 32; Ps 138:1 2, 2 3, 6 7, 7 8 Col 2:12 14; Lk 11:1 13 Today s text from Genesis, paired with the teaching on prayer from Luke s Gospel, illustrates Abraham s relationship with God and his role as one who intercedes on behalf of his people. God shares with Abraham his intention to punish the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah, who pleads on their behalf. Would God, the judge of all the world, sweep away the innocent with the guilty?. God s mercy is such that if even 10 righteous people are found, he will spare the whole place for their sake. In Colossians we are reminded that we were buried with him in baptism [and] raised with him through faith. The early church saw the strong connection between baptism and death; we die to sin and rise to new life, as though the baptismal font were a tomb in which we share in Christ s death and resurrection. Through baptism we become God s children, so we can address God as Abba, Father. In giving us the Our Father, Jesus is teaching us how to pray. Our prayer should be simple and direct, acknowledging our dependence on God. Jesus goes on to advise persistence in prayer. We are not to sit back and wait for God s goodness. Ask seek knock, he tells us, for God watches over us and cares for us as a loving parent. Luke s unique addition to this teaching (see Mt 7:11) is that God will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. It is this Spirit, which guided Jesus, that we should be seeking in our prayer. For reflection: Abraham s dialogue with God serves as an example of intercessory prayer. Are my prayers of intercession sometimes focused on others, or are they just concerned with my own wants and needs? Is my prayer one of actively asking, seeking, and knocking? Or am I more resigned to accept whatever comes my way and attribute it to God s will.

We meet in the gym of the school once a month and the sessions last for about 2.5 hours. All in the parish are welcome! If you have never been a part of GOF, make a commitment to yourself and your faith life to attend a session this year. Each session is $10. and includes a meal and all materials. Family registrations for the year are $125. If you are new to our parish and have questions, contact Mercedes or maustgen9092@att.net All preparation for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation take place through the Generations of Faith programming. Registration forms are available at the above and in the parish office. Faith Sharing As we begin a new school year, we also begin another year of Adult Faith Sharing on Thursday mornings in the Faith Formation Office at 9:15 AM. If you are interested in some good conversation and a little stretching of the knowledge of your faith, you are welcome to join us. 5 Peace & Justice Community Garden News The Holy Name Community Garden Ministry was established last year to bring together compassionate parishioners who value food justice, social responsibility, and action. Through our garden, we try to create an organic environment and provide healthy food to those in need. Diane Jostes and Fr. Ed visit in the garden. With only nine volunteers, our first year s harvest produced 1000 pounds of produce which was donated to local organizations and our own parishioners in need of fresh organic vegetables. The response was so gratifying we committed to expand our garden this year from 1000 sq. ft. to 3000 sq. ft. adding many new vegetables. Today we grow zucchini, squash, many types of peppers, six types of tomatoes, beans, onions, pumpkins, rhubarb, chard, and many herbs: basil, rosemary, thyme, dill, and lavender. This year s initial planting was successful due to the amazing generosity of many parishioners donating vegetables and their time to plant them. Your Community Garden takes a lot of volunteer hours to maintain, harvest, and distribute all of these vegetables. While we have expanded in size, there are the same handful of loyal volunteers who continue to work very hard to insure that fresh produce gets picked and delivered to different organizations in our community. We now harvest three times a week: Sunday 7 AM for Holy Name Shut-ins and Parishioners. Tuesday 1-2 PM for St. Clare Kitchen Saturday 8 AM for St. Monica s Home in Dyer or St. Jude House in Crown Pt. We need your help. If you are able to either volunteer in the garden with the harvest or would like to help distribute the produce, please join our group. Our garden only produces from mid July to Labor Day. Even if you only come out once, that hour of time you ve donated is helping us fight the battle of poverty and injustice in our community. 6 Parish Life Outdoor Masses There will be outdoor Masses in the yard again this summer. The Masses will be on Wednesdays and will begin at 6 PM. The host will provide the main food dish along with beverages. The guests are asked to bring a side dish veggie or dessert and lawn chairs. If you are planning to attend one of these masses, please call and let the host know.
