It also is the weekend when the 2019 Appeal bochues ae to be inseted in you bulletins. Please pepae an alta announcement asking people to eview the bochue and be pepaed to make an Annual Catholic Appeal pledge (an example is given below). The in-pew envelope will include a section whee paishiones can note if they have aleady given by mail Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me and shae the Wod Please spend some time this week eflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal bochue that you eceived with you bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much diffeent than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment whee you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a pomise to make a gift ove a span of time. Each pledge makes a diffeence because all paishes paticipate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable ou Achdiocese to delive needed ministies and sevices to answe Jesus call to Come, Follow Me and shae the Wod. Once we each ou paish goal of $ in paid pledges, 100% of any additional funds come back to ou paish to help fund ou needs. If you eceived you pledge fom in the mail, please complete it and mail it back o bing it to Mass next weekend. The pasto s homily should be a five-minute pesentation. Please wok closely with you Stewadship and Development patne to customize you homily fo you paish. In pepaation, pastos should listen to the Cadinal s homily, which is to be played at all Masses on Commitment Weekend. A pinted copy of the homily appeas in the Commitment Weekend section of this manual. 11 ANNOUNCEMENT WEEKEND Homily Notes fo Peaches fo Announcement Sunday The theme of the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is Come, Follow Me and shae the Wod The following homily notes wee pepaed by F. Louis J. Cameli. (Paishes have the option of having a student fom a Catholic school, a epesentative fom a ministy funded by the ACA, o an achdiocesan employee offe a testimony eithe afte the homily o at the end of Mass.) The theme of the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is Come, follow me and shae the Wod. Many of the geat saints of ou tadition, such St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Bigid of Sweden and St. Fancis de Sales and St. Teesa of Avila, payed by imagining themselves inside the gospel that they wee eading o that they had head. We can do the same thing today to ou geat advantage. We can, fo example, ente into today s gospel passage dawn fom chapte six of St. Luke s gospel. Pictue the scene as Luke does a lage stetch of level gound. Imagine being with the people who ae thee a lage numbe of Jesus disciples and othes who ae thee to hea Jesus and pehaps become his disciples. We can see Jesus as he begins to shae a wod with this geat cowd. We can sense that he is going to say something of decisive impotance to them. He has aleady called them and us to be his disciples, his followes. Now he foms them in a way of life that enables them to be his tue disciples and so to shae his destiny. The call to follow Jesus, as he explains it in the vaious blessings and woes that he enumeates, always summons us to ecognize the lasting futue effects of how we live ou lives ight now, in this moment. As disciples called by Jesus, we find ouselves poised between ou pesent moment and God s pomised futue. So, fo example, he says, Blessed ae you who ae now hungy, fo you will be satisfied. If now we follow a path of self-satisfaction, self-absoption, ou own amusement, and a dive to achieve the esteem of othes, we will inevitably fall into a woeful state in the futue. If, on the othe hand, we follow the way of Jesus who was poo, hungy and dependent on his heavenly fathe, eady to embace his coss, and willing to endue the ejection of othes fo a geate good, we will find that blessedness, that happiness and fulfillment that only God can give us. The wod of God, the woship of the Chuch, and ou life togethe in the Chuch all this keeps eoienting us to ou call to be disciples, to ou mission and pupose in this wold, and to a way of living in the blessedness of God. All this is not distant, and it is not complicated. It is in the odinay cicumstances of ou lives that we live as disciples and cay on ou mission in ou maiages and families, in the wokplace, in school, in ou neighbohoods and lage civic community, as we stuggle and celebate and suppot each othe. Ou esponse in these pesent moments shapes how we can live in God s pomise in the futue. Next weekend we will once again have a special oppotunity to eclaim ou lives as disciples. It is the Commitment Weekend fo the Annual Catholic Appeal. The theme fo this yea s Appeal follows fom last yea and develops it: Come, follow me and shae the Wod. It is, of couse, an appeal to suppot the wok of the Chuch with ou contibutions. Even moe, howeve, it is an oppotunity to eflect and pay about ou following of Jesus as his disciples and ou mission to shae his wod in ou speech and in ou actions. In the meanwhile, we gathe today aound Jesus, as the cowds did in today s gospel. We have head his wods, and we need to take them to heat. We will meet him in the Euchaist, the one who calls us, sustains us, and one day will welcome us home into his blessed kingdom. 10

13 COMMITMENT WEEKEND Febuay 23-24, 2019: Commitment Weekend! Pepaation Open the supply boxes to ensue you have eceived sufficient quantities of all item, including pencils fo inpew gifts. Place a PENCIL inside each pledge envelope befoe distibution. Play the Cadinal s ecoded homily on the equipment you will use on Commitment Weekend. You may have also odeed a DVD in eithe English o Spanish. If, fo some eason, the cassette, CD, o DVD do not wok popely, contact you Stewadship and Development patne immediately to secue eplacements. Immediately afte the eading of the Gospel, the pasto will play Cadinal Cupich s homily. Then, the pasto will add a bief announcement in suppot of the Annual Catholic Appeal. The pasto will then lead the in-pew pocess at evey Mass. Taining the Students and Infoming the Ushes The paish should ecuit students who ae pepaing fo Confimation to distibute and collect the pledge envelopes. If you choose to use students, please be sue that thee is adult supevision and sufficient taining. You will need one student in evey section of you chuch, about evey five (5) to eight (8) pews. You will need one adult in each side aisle to etieve exta envelopes fom some pews and to povide exta envelopes fo pews that do not have enough. These adults should also take cae of any people who ae standing o the choi loft. Each paish should hold a pactice session fo the students, when the Pasto eads though the entie scipt. To ensue that the students attend thei assigned Mass and epot at the ight time and place, a lette should be sent home with them afte the pactice session. The ushes and/o students will collect the Annual Catholic Appeal envelopes immediately afte the in-pew pocess. Make sue that the decision on who will do this is made and communicated well ahead of time. 12

14 COMMITMENT WEEKEND Taining the Students The pasto and the Annual Catholic Appeal Leadeship team assigned to coodinate in-pew activities should tain the students. Assign the students and adults to thei espective aeas and have them assemble in the aea of the chuch whee they will wait fo the Pasto s signal. The peaanged signal will tell the students that they should move to thei assigned aeas. At the point in the scipt whee Fathe asks one membe of each household to aise his o he hand, the students can pass the equied numbe of pledge envelopes down each ow. The adult woking the outside aisle can etieve oveages and povide envelopes whee thee ae shotfalls. Only one adult pe side aisle is needed. Students will need the following infomation (We suggest poviding it in witing): whee to epot; what time to epot; whee to pick up thei supplies; whee to wait fo the signal that it is time to distibute thei envelopes; which specific pews they will wok; when they will be expected to move to thei assigned locations; when Fathe signals fom the alta and what signal he will use; what to do while the people ae completing thei pledge envelopes; whee to get the collection baskets; whee to empty the baskets afte they collect the pledge envelopes; whee to etun the baskets. At each Mass, a committee membe should be designated to take the Annual Catholic Appeal envelopes to an appopiate, secue place afte they ae collected. Pledges and Fulfillment It is suggested that substantial effots be made to educate paishiones on the impotance of not only making but fulfilling thei pledges. Paishes should begin to define what a pledge is in the vey fist Annual Catholic Appeal Bulletin Announcement. Cae must be taken not to discouage pledging. Something as simple as the following blub may help. Use the following at the end of paagaph fou in the scipt: It is impotant that you make you pledge payment evey month. Even though the fom you have shows six payments, the Achdiocese will send out monthly statements. You have though Decembe 2019 to fulfill you pledge. Concens About Pivacy If you paishiones have a seious level of concen about the pivacy of thei names, addesses, etc., please include the following pio to paagaph five in the scipt: All infomation that you povide today will be shaed only with the Achdiocese of Chicago and this paish. No one else will have access to it. 13

15 COMMITMENT WEEKEND Cadinal s Homily Cadinal s Homily 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal Commitment Weekend Febuay 23-24, 2018 Cadinal Blase J. Cupich Come, follow me and shae the Wod My bothes and sistes in Chist, You have just head the poclamation of today s gospel taken fom chapte six of Saint Luke. This passage undescoes what we have been heaing acoss the past seveal weeks the call of Jesus to his disciples to follow him. And we you and I ae numbeed among those disciples whom he calls. Luke s gospel also emphasizes the mission that Jesus gives us to evangelize to shae his good news with a waiting wold that is deeply in need of healing and enewal. This message, the message of call and of mission that Saint Luke descibes, fits pefectly into this moment in ou lives within the Achdiocese of Chicago. Fo example, ove the next seveal yeas ou Annual Catholic Appeal will focus on the call to follow Jesus. This yea, in light of Luke s gospel, we want to paticulaly focus on ou call to shae his wod. This yea s Appeal theme Come, follow me and shae the Wod is also at the heat of Renew My Chuch and its goal to enew us as missionay-disciples of Jesus. We follow him, and we shae him and his wod, and we do this togethe. If we listen attentively to Jesus in today s gospel, we ealize that we shae his wod not only in ou speech but especially in ou actions. We shae his wod when we love ou enemies, extend ou geneosity to those in need, and become souces of mecy and compassion fo eveyone. The Annual Catholic Appeal enables us to shae the wod of Jesus about love, geneosity, and mecy in all of ou actions. Though ou paticipation and ou financial contibutions in the life and mission of the Chuch and its outeach pogams, we can follow Jesus and we can shae his wod. Wheneve we gathe to celebate the Euchaist, as we do in this moment, we eceive God s wod and the bead of life. As disciples who hea the call to follow Jesus, we must take up that wod and sacament in ode to follow him. The gifts we eceive ae also meant to be shaed so that othes may live. When we suppot ou paishes, ou schools, and ou pogams of eligious education, when we pomote effots to eadicate violence, ceate a cultue of espect fo life, and extend a helping hand to people who suffe disastes thoughout the wold, then we ae following Jesus and shaing his wod. The Annual Catholic Appeal enables us to do all of this. Though the Annual Catholic Appeal, we can shae his wod in ou paish communities, in ou Achdiocese, and acoss the globe. On this Commitment Weekend fo the Annual Catholic Appeal, ou local chuch, ou Achdiocese, heeds the call to Come, follow me and shae the Wod. We can enew ou commitment to follow and to shae, as we pledge ou suppot fo the mission of the Chuch. You pasto will now walk you though the patneship pocess of the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please thank all those who make a pledge, as well as any voluntees. Impotant Note: Be caeful not to state o imply that people should take the pledge cads home and bing them back. This appoach always esults in lage numbes of pledge cads neve being etuned. Expound upon what it means to come and follow Jesus. Talk about ou commitment to watch and lean fom Jesus; to pay, as He payed in a place apat; commit ouselves to suppot the woks of the Chuch. Connect you paish s contibutions to the healing and comfoting touch of Jesus fo people who need His help. We will now begin ou commitment pocess. I ask those who ae to distibute the pledge envelopes and the pencils to come fowad and distibute them. Thank past contibutos to the Appeal; emind them of how they have impacted lives. Remind families of the call to suppot the gifts of the Chuch, which includes you paish, all the Catholic communities of Cook and Lake counties, and those aound the wold. Please take an envelope even if you have aleady given in the mail. While we ae waiting, please take a look at the monthly pledge payment amounts that ae listed on the ight side of the pledge document and conside giving a daily sacificial gift. This inceases the likelihood of families witing down the coect infomation, thus, easing the pocess fo you paish, the Achdiocese of Chicago, and ou gift pocesso. Review the envelope befoehand to familiaize youself with the way it looks. Pause afte each line to give people enough time to complete it. Patience is key to this pocess. Feel fee to explain the pupose of the line-by-line vebalization of the instuctions. Some pastos talk about stewadship and the impotance of coect infomation; othes utilize comedy and humo. Please customize you appoach befoe hand, utilizing you Stewadship and Development patne as a esouce. Encouage people to include phone numbes and addesses in case thee is any issue with pocessing thei geneous gift. I am going to join you in making a commitment and fill out an envelope with you all.
