2 - Page 2 TUESDAY, MAY 5, 1959 Waiting in Vain The honesty of the MT student has been called into question The poblem of student ethics is an old and ecuing one, but it has come into so much pominence of late that it cannot be ignoed Examples of this poblem ae not difficult to discove: The continual theft of money and pesonal belongings fom domitoy ooms; the ecent theft of the ntenational Week flags; the double-dealing used by senios on inteview tavel expenses; the loss of postes fom bulletin boads; and the theft of 's fom nstitute sales acks Most of these instances have been maked up to typical college panks and youthful fun by the offendes and thei sympathizes, but this is a shee ationalization, fo the poblem goes deepe This yea thee students wee asked to withdaw by the dean's office because they wee caught in the act of stealing; two moe wee appehended but have been pemitted to emain Eveyone ecognizes that acts leading to expulsion ae quite seious, but whee is the line to be dawn between theft and mee pank? s it becase newspapes only cost five cents that people feel justified in eading them without paying, o does the size of AT&T make it fai game to tampe with telephones? We think not Appaently thee ae many who disagee We might inquie into just what pompts students of a geat school like MT to indulge in dishonesty j D Salinge said that "the moe expensive a school is, the moe cooks it has" But pesumably evey student hee is above aveage in intelligence, pesumably he has come fom a good home, pesumably he has been taught the meaning of ight and wong Yet twice a week, we find that less then 30, of the newspapes taken fom hono sales acks have Scouts, Exhibits, Success The following note mystically appeaed in one of ou typewites set up in the lobby of building seven on the moning of Open House "Open House at the Massachusetts nstitute of Technology began today with hodes of little boy scouts in thei geen and white unifoms awakening Cambidge with thei woodsman cies of Tazan inspied movies" And so it did By aftenoon, howeve, the scene had changed consideably as geat masses of visitos began thei seemingly endless maches though ou halls Although fom ou vantage point it seemed like the numbe was somewhat less than 25,000 (the official "count"), we felt that those who wee hee wee at least impessed with the nstitute We extend congatulations to the students on the Open House Committee who so ably oganized the affai which, we emembe only too well, was opposed by almost eveybody ealie in the yea On the othe side of the ledge, we wee extemely disappointed in a numbe of exhibits which wee left fo the public to stae at - and leave To be effectivse as anything moe than a cuiosity piece, an exhibit must be explained as was done so well at the eacto This undoubtedly points out the validity of the gumblings of a few unhappy individuals whose task was to oganize student suppot fo thei couse exhibits What is done is done, though; we can be sue many people have a diffeent idea of MT than they did last Fiday We feel no qualms in calling 'Open House a success the MJ4 been paid fo Appaently, nealy 3/4 of the students have Afte each numbe in the billiant concet given by The no hono; they have eithe been failed in thei basic education o ae so immatue that, once feed fom the bonds day evening, John Lewis left the seven foot gand piano Moden Jass Quatet at Kesge Auditoium last Wednes- of home and paents, they have taken a holiday fom moals and slowly walked a shot distance acoss the stage amidst a n a school that is engaged in the education and pepaation of men of pofessional standing and leadeship, this is hind the micophone waiting to comment on the Quatet's wave of applause which ose in amplitude as he stood be- a dangeous and distubing sign The pofessions of law next selection He emaked about the title of a piece and medicine ae built on igid standads of pofessional (sometime obvious afte his explanation) and about its ethics; the lowe pofessional standing of the enginee o musical natue (Concode has a fugue stuctue, fo example) in a hesitant, nevous-like manne, choosing his scientist is patly based on the fact that he has not as yet evolved such ethics But cetainly they cannot be long in wods caefully and appopiately (efeing, fo instance, coming, and if the pogess made by the pofessional to tunes of the bop peiod as "exploited," the announcing oganizations is not to be lost, pofessional ethics must Chalie Pake's Nou s/ the Time, a blues which was plagiaized late by Tin Pan Alley, given wods, and enamed The begin in college Cetainly no eputable fim will even hie any senio whom it finds has been milking evey company Hucklebuck) he inteviews fo tavel expenses, fo no oganization can The pefomance, pesented in two lengthy sets, included toleate dishonesty Yet, MT has beautiful, failed sensitive to develop compositions a by John Lewis, seveal wokable woks ethic by moden of honesty jazz-men, t cetainly such as cannot vibahapist be imposed Milt Jackson, Pake, and Dizzy Gillespie, by the and Administation aangements of We such ae waiting fo some action divese fae as the English folk caol God Rest Ye Alety, fom the students We wait in vain Gentlewen The Quatet, playing in its paadoxically tightly disciplined and loosely ambling, elaxed, pulsating style, The shifted Changing easily fom ensemble Scene passages to solo sections and back again, each potion undelined by the pecise We do not think dumming that MT of could Connie have Kay made Kay, seving a bette both as pecussionist and musical choice "effects" fo the make, new Dean bounced of the clean, School un-slued of Engineeing than shots and, especially on Fontessa, olls off the cymbals, and Pofesso Bown; his enthusiasm and effectiveness as an employed his unusual collection of tiangles, hand cymbals, educato have been made clea by the sweeping changes in and othe exotic equipment in exhiliating fashion the Electical Engineeing depatment since it has been John Lewis played in his swinging, economical way, the unde his contol notes clealy and evenly stated, both asoloist and suppote t is well known that these changes wee to Milt Jackson based on the Jackson, the solo sta of the goup, using philosophy the foot of a pedals boade, on moe his electically scientific, type poweed of engineeing vibahap to achieve a haunting biato, seemed to education be altenately They punishing his instument, as he ained down his mallets in soulful have pobably been a significant facto in the high level discussions on the question of the best way toents, and caessing it, as he danced his sticks back and to conduct on undegaduate education fo the apidly foth Pecy Heath, his facial expessions constant eflections fo his thoughts, thumped and scaped his impotant advancing pofession of engineeing Thus the implications of this appointment will undoubtedly be felt thoughout the bass in thick appot with his cohots nstitute in tems of the decisions which will be made concening this The concet, pesented by the Peshing Rifles, ended with two encoes; question the of latte, educational totally philosophy unexpected except fo the polonged applause, bought seveal membes of the audience of one thousand (held to that numbe because of false Although the poblem (boadly titled "Engineeing s Engineeing Science") is one which can be ably handled umos that the auditoium had been sold out at an ealy only by administation and faculty membes, we think is it date), who wee nealy out thexits, scuying back to thei something about which students should be infomed D seats Statton had planned to talk about this topic in his speech Mye Kutz, ' 59 to inteested students seveal weeks ago;
