The latest victims of this inept agency ae the 8b sophomoes in G and H This yea's sophomoes wee told last yea that the deam of the new doms would be theis if only they showed patience. Obviously, living in G and H fo two yeas should pove one's patience. Howeve, this is not the case. nstead, the Housing Depatment has poposed to distibute next yea's feshmen evenly thoughout the quad. The esult of this policy will be to keep between 500 and 600 sophomoes in G and H The injustice of this becomes moe appaent when one ealizes that this decision eflects but a geneal attitude on the pat of the Housing Depatment. The questions of enovations in G and H has fequently been discussed by the Housing Depatment. Howeve, as we all know by now, in this univesity "talk is cheap." Fo example, the Housing Depatment in its benevolence has bestowed upon us a new conveyo belt in ode that it might be as nice as the new quads. Howeve, these meage enticements ae not and should not be enought to placate the students of G & H. Futhemoe, the Housing Depatment has not pefomed its feats of ineptitude in isolated incidents. Rathe, it seems to be pat of a conceted effot to make sue students don't get what they pay fo. A ecent illustation of this has been the ailoading of students though administative heaing fo such heinous cimes as keeping pets past an inflexible deadline that was suddenly enfoced in the middle of the yea. They have also failed time and time again to povide adequate potection fo the student duing vacation. The list of obbeies, including the incident in Kelly concening wokmen, ae insults added to injuy. will not even discuss the delays and lapses that have chaacteized the maintenance sevice this yea. Potest concening the feezing of sophomoes in G and H has taken the fom of a petition containing 600 names. The Housing Depatment must espond to this petition in a manne which shows a concen fo the student. believe that the Housing Depatment must give the sophomoes the oppotunity to leave G and H. mean all the sophomoes, not just a select few. The logic of allowing one student to enjoy the sunlit teaces of Kelly fo fou yeas, while making anothe student languish in G fo thee o maybe moe yeas, escapes me. The havoc that the Housing Depatment has weacked on the students must come to an end. uge all sophomoes to put pessue on this puppet agency that seeks to fulfill its own ends and make it fallbefoe the powe of the students. Vietnam fits squaely in the middle of this dilemma in two ways. Since Wold Wa, the wa economy has povided a majo aea of investment and souce of pofit theeby maintaining U.S. capitalism. With the closing of U.S. investment oppotunities in Westen Euope (evidenced by the ecessions) an incease in the U.S. wa economy was the only immediate hope fo staving off complete stagnation and collapse, and only an escalation of the wa could justify the inceased taxation fo the subsidies demanded by the defense secto. Please, please do this soon. Can have you eplies by Fiday, Apil O? " fom Memoandum witten by D. James Simons, Chaiman of the Mathematics Depatment This memoandum was issued afte students pesented D. Simons with a petition containing 1,500 signatues equesting the ehiing of D. David Schoe and the changing of pioities fom eseach to teaching. Evidently, D. Simons continues to ignoe all pleas fo student input into the evaluation of the Mathematics faculty. D. Simons has demonstated the lack of good T Zseoo Khe judgment in his issuance of the above memoandum, and should be chastised fo it, as he ightly has been. The ecommendations fo the five membes of the faculty equesting tenue have been etuned to the Math Depatment chaiman fo specific wods of student input, afte Simons had sent them off to D. H. Bentley Glass, Academic VicePesident. Evidently, D. Simons does not believe in the ability of students to diffeentiate between who is a good teache, and who is a good eseache. Students have been leafletted by membes of the "Adhoc Committee to Retain Schoe" duing peegistation. They have been equested to efain fom peegisteing fo mathematics couses as a show of suppot fo D. Schoe and his stuggle against an immobile policy. Statesman suppots the concept of thei stuggle. A teache should be judged on his ability to teach, not on his quantity of eseach. Theefoe, we ae uging students to paticipate in a peaceful picket to be held on Thusday, Apil 16 at 1 p.m. aound the Physics Building. t is one way to make known that students have ights, too! Keep Cads Those and Lettes The ecent, continuing wave of stikes in the U.S. is the only esponse Ameican wokes can give to the waeconomycaused inflation and social decay. The capitalists' only esponse at this time to the economic uin they have ceated is an attempt to make the wokes pay fo inflation and the inceasing debt sevice by futhe inceasing wage taxation coupled with a butal suppession of wokes' stuggles, legislated settlement imposed on aiload wokes, toops to bust the postal stike, etc. The fist signs of a adicalization of Ameican wokes has come with the opposition of many ank and ile goups to the Vietnam wa and the inflationay wa economy. t is now cucial that we pose a positive altenative to the nonsolutions of the LindsayMcGoven "New Politics" politicians. As demands, suppession, and Nixonfosteed ecession continued to escalate, wokes will come to see that only in alliances aound common demands with lage and lage segments of the woking class, and eventually with othe social stata as well, can they hope to win stuggles even to maintain pesent inadequate living standads. Ameicans will come to ealize that only such class alliances have the powe to evese the social decay, destuctive economic. cycles, and stop the violence pepetated on wokes by the state in capitalist inteest. Thus capitalism's inheent difficulty to continue useful consume goods poduction ceates the economicpolitical situation which calls foth the political esponse of the Vietcong and the political esponse of the Ameican woke, a esponse which has the potential to tansfom an economicpolitical poblem fo the uling class into a majo social cisis involving all social layes in Ameica. n this peiod students must demonstate willingness to suppot wokes stuggles by fighting fo pogams which addess themselves to the common needs of all wokes and point out pactical classinstituted solutions to these needs; solutions on which all hopes fo decent living depend. Only a political woking class movement, based on a pogam demanding an incease in new consume and capital goods poduction, deals with the oot cause of the decay of ou society, the lack of essential sevices, wa and inflation. We must begin by demanding the complete and planned econvesion of ou wasteful inflationay defense industies to the poduction of goods that fulfill human needs. On Long sland fo example, Gumman will lay off 5,000 wokes while its aifame poduction machiney could easily be used to build the mass tansit we so badly need. Reconvesion would libeate capital and machiney, but not the 85% of ou scientific and technical wokes, now employed to pefect waste, to wok on human poblems. ntoduction of new poduction techniques and edeployment of ou unemployed and misemployed wokes will cheapen the pices of all commodities and povide a net incease of useful jobs (counteposed to Nixon's ising unemployment). Such a pogam enables wokes to attack inflation nationally at the level of poduction, while simultaneously stating to fulfill the neglected human want in Ameica and the wold. Aound such a pogam the woking class, unemployed, and students can join to stop the wa by smashing the wa machine. A ally will be held on Wednesday, 2 p.m. at the libay mall to suppot wokes' stuggles and to discuss the ole of the student movement in these stuggles. Comi ' By SCOTT KULPPEL Well, hee we ae, exactly six months afte the fist Moatoium Day. He blew his ai of legitimacy howeve, when he sent his daft boad a change of addess on the belly of a dead fish. But no matte, it still, by law, must go into his file. But by fae the most i agative couse of action so fa, has been a student in New Yok City who claims that he, single handedly, signed his daft boad up fo 37 oneyea subsciptions to the Reade's Digest, 55 twoyea subsciptions of Time, Life, and Spots llustated, 18 subsciptions to vaious ecod clubs (with ove 200 fee ecods and obligations to buy 200 moe), and some 150 o so assoted pamphlets, books, and whatnots. AR of which, might add, cost him not one cent as he used the handy postagepaid selfaddessed postcads that one finds in all sols of magazines. hen too, he checked the little box saying, "Bill me late." 8 Baseball Team ^^^ 1~Mf^ Faces Post H At Home g H.L±±V ^ V Today 3 p.m. f i_ i S t Spots lttsman Tennis Team Faces Hofsta At Home Today 3 p.m. 1 Page 8 With the stat of the softball season, sping has officially come to Stony Book. Unlike basketball and football, whee some degee of talent is necessay to suvive the season, softball bings out all those fustated "wouldbe" supestas who can't tell the diffeence between the bat and the ball. Howeve, all is not lost. As was the case in those spots that took place duing the fall and winte,. softball also has its shae of notewothy individual and team accomplishments. Since Newsday and thepess efuse to cove out intamual pogam, this column will bing to you accounts of these emakable feats. The softball pogam, unde the ion ule of gentle and kind Coach Bob Snide, consists of nine hall leagues and fou independent leagues involved in a doubleelimination tounament. All teams will have played thei fist game by Thusday. With weathe pemitting, the intamual softball championship will be held aound the second week in May. The play of "Abuckle" and the "Madi Gas" highlighted this week's independent action. Led by the two homes and six RBs of captain Dan Geenstein and the unning, fielding and hitting of Joe "Running Bea" Bleiche, " Abuckle" cushed the "Peanuts," 251. "Madi Gas," spaked by the hitting and contol pitching of Rich Feund olled ove "FST," 161. n othe action, "Puple Haze" and the "Teem" beat thei opposition by the espective scoes of 194, and 117. n hall action, the five RBs each by Howie Bege and Geg Gutes poweed KGE2B to a 2314 victoy ove a hapless KGC2A team. n contests involving othe hall teams, the most emakable game was that of KGC3A and KGE2A. KGC3A nipped KGE2A, 98, in a game maked by the back to back homes of the winne's Dave Fein and Dave Baasch as well as by the tipleplay executed by the losing Steinbeck team. The game ended when a had line was caught with the tying and winning uns on the bases. n the McDowell Cup standings, JHC3 still leads with 840 points. Still in contention fo the oveall intamual championship ae TD3A with 795 points, LD3 with 780 points, and AT1B and TD2A with 745 and 715 points, espectively. n next week's column, the esults of the tennis and bowling championships will be highlighted. Hopefully, this will pevent those of you who hate softball fom witing angy lettes. Diamond men Face Post Today n Knick Contest The Stony Book Baseball Team will host CW Post today at 3 p.m. on the athletic field in an ealy meeting of two potential challenges fo the Knick Confeence title. With a ecod of 11 afte two league matches, the Patiots can hadly affod to lose anothe Confeence tilt. Post, in finishing thid last yea, slaughteed the Stony Book team 154, so the Pats will be out fo evenge. Caig Bake is Coach Fank Tiico's mound choice. Bake also stated Stony Book's disasteous opene, a 168 loss to Adelphi, in which the defense let thei Sophomoe state down with fou thid inning eos that led to a wild 12 un inning. Offensively, the team showed some life, as they hit against Caig Menzyl, the Adelphi ace who fashioned a no hitte against them last season. This time Stony Book eached the had thowing lefty and his two successos fo thei eight un total. n t h e i second encounte' Stony Book again showed some shaky defense and offensive life as they battled fom behind to top Booklyn, last yea's fist place Knick team, by the scoe of 119. With this win acting as a lift, the Patiots hope to continue in high gea today as they face thei thid staight Confeence ival. A Masha and Max: You Thought we could do it... And we did! lo V f _0 o 7' a T L By MKE LEMAN t was the bottom of the sixth inning Satuday, and Booklyn, with eight uns aleady in the game was theatening to hit moe. n ode to keep the scoe close, Stony Book Coach Fank Tiico decided to take Steve Keine out of the outfield. But fotunately the coach didn't take Keine out of the v game, as fo the second time in his thee yea vasity caee, Steve Keine went in to pitch. Thee inning; late, fo the fist time in his vasity caee, Steve became a winning pitche, as the Patiots allied to defeat the highly touted Kingsmen. Tack Coach Heny von Mechow was fa fom confident about his men in the weight events at the beginning of this yea. His mood matched that of his team, which was fa fom confident about Satuday's meet with Queens. Mike Vaudeil didn't shae eithe attitude. Mike went out and won the discus and shot put (two weigh events) and placed a supising A :_ &R_ : :_ EA second in the javelin. His effots gained 13 points fo the team (5 fo each fist and 3 fo second), and since the tackmen only won by 12 points (7866) Mike povided the magin of victoy. Fo thei fine effots in helping the tack and baseball teams defeat tough opponents, Mike Vaudeil and Steve Keine ae the Statesman Coathletes of the Week. Keine did not help his team by just pitching fom two outs By NOEL J. GSH t was snowing at 5:30 A.M. on Satuday Apil 11, as the Stony Book cew team headed noth up to Poughkeepsie to face Maist College and Holy Coss in the second meet of the season. By ace time the weathe had modeated and it stated with a slight tailwind. But although the weathe tuned out to be not much of a facto, the tough Maist and Holy Coss did. The Patiot vasity held its opponents even fo about 500 metes. But hee the expeience of the Maist owes began to tell. With a combination of style and powe Maist pulled away winning the 2000 mete ace in a time of 6:01. Stony Book and Holy Coss battled fo second place fo most of the distance. The Cusades finally edged out the Pat cew by only six seconds. The junio vasity ace held in a slightly highe wind again found the stong Maist cew out ahead at the finish. Holy Coss was second with Stony Book a close thid by less than one boat length. This Satuday at the New Yok Athletic Club's Ochad Beach couse the vasity shell will take on an old ival, ona College. The Patiots would dealy like to beat an ona cew they have neve defeated and that has foiled them the last two yeas in the Metopolitan Championships. So fa this season Stony Book's opponents have held the edge in expeience. This yea's ebuilding pogam by Coach Dudzick may pove successful yet. LOSS: Cew Team dopped a tough one Satuday.
