The incidental pupose of this pape is to infom the campus, in geneal, of the tue situation. Fist in impotance is to establish a backgound fo an undestanding of,the fatenity poblem. The fatenities have suffeed geatly because of this wa. The fatenities ae composed of leades, the men who want to do something about this wa. The loss of these men has been a seious blow to thei espective oganizations, a blow felt in all thei undetakings. The fatenities have suffeed fom othe lesse obstacles. One of these was the division along political lines ove an issue that has been long fogotten, in fact it is doubtful that one can find but two o thee pesons on this campus that have eithe head of the incident. These ivalies wee kept alive by men, fatenity and nonfatenity, fo selfish easons. The Fatenity Paty is an attempt to alleviate this poblem. Now we, the fatenities, would like to point out some of the things of which we can boast. Evey eade of this aticle please stop a minute and ecall his o he yeas in college. Look at the leades, the eally big men, the men who did things, wee not the majoity of these men fatenity men? It doesnt The College Paty Based on simple tenets opposition to the domination of campus by any one goup and suppot of a positive and specific pogam of efom the College Paty equests only this: that, its objectives be analyzed, that its candidates be citicized, that eveyone vote and vote his own fee, independent opinions. We have no constaint upon any man, no do we desie to possess any. Ou candidates ae chosen on meit alone by an independent goup of both men and women, of all fou classes, with and without fatenity affiliations. Ou Constitution has been published. Ou pocedue is democatic. To ou objectives, which follow, we invite you citicism. We pledge ouselves to the following: TO PREVENT a fatenity clique domination of the campus. TO LEGISLATE FOR measues in the Student Assembly which will make fo cleane and faie elections. TO LEGISLATE FOR a coopeative, pofitshaing book stoe. TO BRING ABOUT a claification of the Athletic Fee situation. TO SUPPORT any measues which will make fo an impovement in the pesent Hono System. TO SUPPORT a study and evision of womens social ules. National atings of the fences and of the fencing teams will be out shotly and it is expected that W. & M. will be ated high, as will Glassman and Gove as individual fences. With No Little Reget It is with no little eget that we note the esignation of William and Mays John Stewat Byan fom the office of Pesident. In eight yeas Pesident Byan has bought about an academic ennaissance on this Williamsbug campus. Scholaship has been continually upgaded with administative selection of students and faculty additions made to measue against a meit yadstick of continually inceasing high standads. Ou own appeciation of Pesident Byans eight yea administation makes specific acknowledgement of the geat amount of feedom allowed the students of this small college to manage thei own affais. This has been a vey eal expeience fo us, whateve any othe goup o oganization may feel about its actions in elation to administative contol. Fo thee yeas we have been fee to wite as we please and pint the opinions of all students in this William and May college weekly. Thee has been no faculty o administative censoship of amy natue ove the mateial which has been submitted fo publication to this newspape. Such feedom of the pess is a esponsibility that we have honestly undetaken and fo which _ we pint hee ou sincee appeciation. This has been no snail matte. The ight to speak and wite as one believes on all issues of community inteest on this camnus is in the" democatic tadition of William and May to which Pesident Byan has piven geneous sevice these last eight yeas. We ae soy to lose the leadeship of this gentleman and schola. The Boad of Visitos will have geat difficulty to chose a successo who can cay fowad the boad libeal ats pogamme of pogess set in motion by M. Byan duing his pesidency. This is a time of cisis fo William and Mav as well as the nation. At this moment William and May needs the goodwill and influence of men who undestand the academic vahies of highe education quite as much as any peiod in its existence. We hope Pesident Byans position as chancello will allow him to continue an association with the collete that is moe than nominal. William and May, we epeat, is at a vey citical point in its moden pogess as a fist ank college of libeal ats, and has seious need of intelligent leadeship. Pesident Byan has given diection to the main objectives; the Boad, of Visitos has a clea path to follow. In the uncetain futue this college will do well to hold to these objectives listed unde fou headings by William and Mays pesident in his epot to the Boad of Visitos. The fou objectives ae:. A highly educated and enthusiastic faculty. 2. A caefully selected and capable student body. 8. A physical plant adequate fo the instuction and wellbeing of both the faculty and the students. 4. A sound and pogessive financial stuctue without which the othe puposes cannot be fulfilled. Ou well wishesgo topesident Byan fo success and continued good health in his wa wok and new possibilities. "Business As Usual" "Many Ameican fims, in the pusuit of selfinteest o unde the command of copoate esponsibility, continue to confom to unpoductive aangements, which seiously hampe the nations ability to build the weapons equied fo its defense. Conventional popety ights and taditional ways of pofitmaking continue to divet the nations enegies and to inteupt the flow of wa mateials." This, in a nutshell, is the state of the nations big business mind thee months afte Peal Habo. The wods ae those of Thuman Anold and J. Steling Livingston who have witten an aticle captioned "Antitust Wa Policy And Full Poduction" in the Sping, 942, issue of the Havad Business Review. We emphasize the authoship and magazine to emind eveyone that we have not been cibbing though back numbes of last yeas New Masses o The Daily Woke. It is not difficult to undestand what M. Anold and M. Livingston mean when they wite "in the pusuit of selfinteest." They mean that this wa is a pofitable business fo many of ou industial capitalists whose political philosophy is still in the best taditions of the old Hading, Coolidge, and Hoove "laissezfaie" school" of govenment. They mean that companies like Standad Oil of New Jesey and the Aluminum Company of Ameica think that you can do business with Adolf Hitles Gemany. Howeve the Allied statesmen may define the wa objectives of the United Nations, this countys industialists continue to opeate thei copoations on a "business as usual" basis while voting themselves and thei stockholdes pofits which help pay the expenses of a viscious antilabo campaign. What eats ou outs is the cheap patiotic catewauling a numbe of business spokesmen and apologists keep up, while pointing an accus. ing finge at Ameican tadeunionism. as the geat stumbling block in the nations pogess to allout wa poduction. Oganized labo cetainly is no lilywhite handed champion of the peoples ights but it has at least kept its findes out of the intenational Fascist pies cooked up by such maste chefs as I. G. Fabenindustie and M. Rockefelles New Jesey oil company. In thei effot to cone the woid maket on synthetic ubbe poduction Standad Oil and the statecontolled Faben company of Bittefield. Gemany, enteed into a seies of commecial ageements that wee in good woking ode up to Januay, 940. This date is on the testimony of Standads own Vi>ePesident R. T. Hsislam. The Tuman Committee of Conaess has bought out evidence that Standad Oil continued its Axis business association as late as Apil, 94. It is a fact that last Sping the Rockefelle company was still selling gasoline to Lati and Condo, the Geman and Italian ai lines in Bazil. Magnesium is anothe aw mateial vital to ou wa economy which has been puposely suppessed in domestic poduction by the Geman Faben fim in collaboation with Ameicas Aloca aluminum monopoly. This metal is used as an alloy in a numbe of poducts including aiplane pats. The 939 Geman output of, magnesium was moe than 50% of the wold total while as late as 940 Ameican magnesium poduction was less than a thid of. the Geman poduction. Reason fo this poo Ameican showing ean be found in a conspiacy between "the Aluminum Company of Ameica and I. G. Fabenindustie to keep ou domestic magnesium poduction down to pevent competition with aluminum in the Ameidan light metal maket. Just how effective this monopoly ageement has been in limiting magnesium poduction is gaphically illustated by the following passage fom the above mentioned Havad Business Review aticle: "Since that ageement was negotiated neithe I. Q. Fabenindus Editoial tie no Aloca has poduced magnesium in the United States, no has eithe made patents held by the Magnesium Development Copoations [The patents owned by the Magnesium, Development Copoation ae Geman and Ameican patents pooled by the Aluminum Company of Ameica and I. G. Fabenindustie pusuant to thei 93 ageement] available to any othe company as of the date of the witing of this aticle. Although an oganization desiing to begin the poduction of magnesium has pojected plans fo the constuction of a plant employing the Magnesium Development Copoations electolytic pocess, to the authos knowledge no aangement satisfactoy to the Magnesium Development Copoation has been made fo the use of these patents". This aticle, we epeat, was pinted in the Sping issue of the Havad Business Review. This is big business of which we wite, not oganized labo. This is bloody business that needlessly costs Ameican lives fo the selfinteest of pivate pofit. IN OUR TIME By ELI DIAMOND TO FIGHT THE WAR II In the last aticle it was said that in spite of the fact that the amies of the fascist nations have been developed by geneal consciption, they in no sense can be consideed to confom to the spiit of the definition of a popula amy although they most cetainly do confom to its lette. The conception of the popula amy implies that the amy is itself an ogan of societv. that it is composed of and solely in the inteest of defending, the entie peoole of a nation. Unde the conditions of moden industialized wafae, socalled "Total Wa", the whoe nopulation must become pat of the amed foces whethe they wea unifoms o not. The best demonstations of the pactical application of this type of wafae ae to be found in the natue of the esistance of Loyalist Spain, in China, and in the USSR. Pofessional Amy is Paasitic On the othe hand, howeve, the pofessional amy is paasitic within its own nation not to mention the teitoy that it oveuns. Hee the amy is an end in itself. It is identified only with the ambitions and the inteests, of the uling class, and to which the people as such must be passively subsevient, o (as in this moden age) ae focibly compelled to sacifice evey effot to the militay Moloch. In tems of this definition, the fascist amies ae undeniably pofessional amies; and theefoe thee is a vey maked dichotomy between the amy and the geat mass of the population. The one is the maste, the othe Is the slave. Clealy, as the anks of the maste class become depleted, and the amy is foced to daw upon the geneal population, the lagest single goup of whom ae the" factoy wokes, the amy will become einfoced with men whose inteests ae in diametic opposition to those of the oiginal amy. We Can Not Ape Fascism Obviously if we wee to ape the political methods of fascism in ode to fight the wa, we would in due time each the same situation in which the moale of the ank in file, and the ability of the geneal population would begin to decline apidly. All things being equal, a stalemate would be eached which would leave things geneally inconclusive. Howeve a glance.at the map indicates quite clealy that all things ae by no means equal. The fascist powe is in complete domination of Euope, and almost the whole aea of the Southwesten Pacific, and the theat of immediate conquest hangs heavily ove the est of the wold, exclusive of Noth and South Ameica. Ou enemies ae in contol of enough of the stategic bastions and aw mateials to ule out at once any hope that attitional wafae may at one time have had of success. To ape the fascist methods can only hold out the hope of waging a wa of attition with, ou available manpowe. Factionalism Must Be Eadicated Populaly Speaking If Si Issac Newton can do it why cant you so dont pay any attention to "Dont Sit Unde The Apple Tee". This pohibitoy note is stuck on Bluebid 474 by Glenn Mille. The numbe has catchy lyics, and the tune blends in nicely. The Modenaies, assisted by Maian Hutton, also Tex Beneke, pesent a smat endition of this numbe. * * * * On Columbia Hay James ecoded "Sleepy Lagoon". Jimmy Dosey has done an appealing ecoding of this instumental numbe. This half of the Dosey twosome seems to have a popensity fo doing instumentals with a geat deal of success, such as "FingeBusting" and the vey fascinating "Ba Babble" which was popula last summe. * # * # "I Cant Give You Anything But Love, Baby"??? Anyway, Dinah Shoe on Bluebid 4288 wables in he finest fashion this old favoite. The esults ae pleasing and I think that youll like this teatment of such a swell song. The By MARTHA NEWELL platte patne is "I Look At Heaven". If I mention the fact that Feddy Matin plays fo Dinah on this ecod, then you should know that he is going to inset a little bit of his enovated and massaced classicism. Thats just what he does hee, fo "I Look At Heaven" is the inevitable vocal teatment of the Gieg "Piano Conceto". So sad!! So sad!! This is quite a gacious thing; no paticula eason fo mentioning it, I just think its nice. $ ifc S&! $ To the gentleman fom Havad who smokes a con cob pipe; thee is always Toscanini! THE OUTLOOK By WILL BEKGWALL The fatenity situation on this campus looks gave, fom the fatenity standpoint. We have eason to believe that fom othe standpoints, notably the administations, the futue that looms ahead fo campus social oganizations is something they have hopefully awaited. In fact, if the tuth must be known, they have actually engineeed many of the toubles that all too fequently oganized Geeks have accepted as "mattes of couse". A Lage Investment It is tue that the College does have a lage investment at stake in the mens domitoies to which fatenities seem to menace by poviding othe means of housing. It is tue that ou student body, next yea, will pobably be composed lagely of women.(which we hope will still be known as coeds). The poblem then becomes a simple one of convesion of mens dom into a gils dom, so why assault fatenity? Why impose scholastic equiements, sophomoe standing, etc., etc., on students befoe they may live and eat in a fatenity house? William and May A Pep School Again the egulations make William and May look like a pep school. Such estiction assumes that the student body is incompetent of enjoying the pivileges of Ameican citizeny, fo it is witten in the Constitution that as citizens, we shall not be denied the ight to peacably assemble. Fo a centuy and a half, most Ameicans have intepeted that as to mean fo any system of govenment to keep hands off peacable assembly in evey way. Why then, doesnt ou College administation leave fatenities to themselves in the good old democatic way? If the students who ae citizens of today ae to be subjects of such undemocatic teatment now, how ean they be expected to become pope citizens of ou democacy tomoow? A PERSONAL OPINION By BRADFORD DUNHAM The elephant, the huge old beast is slow to mate; He finds a female, they show no haste they wait... They do not snatch, they do not tea; thei massive blood moves as the moontides, nea, moe nea till they touch in flood. (I>. H. Lawence). The ejuvenated elephant, howeve, its huge eas folding ove its eyes and its slende tail tickling its soft ea end, umbles "On!", and moves apidly, smashing blindly against, a wall of eality vines and tuth tees. The tees ae indestuctible, though, the huge beast may smash thei leaves to the gound and dance upon them; and he, though ejuvenated, still has soft skin. This elephant had best emove his eas fom his eyes and stop obeying the stimuli of his slende, cooked, tickling *tail, if the eve inceasing smat of wounds is not ultimately to ovecome him. All Fatenity Clique If the system of the new allfatenity clique woks asplanned, no man who is not. in a fatenity and no woman, whethe she concens heself with campus politics o not, will have the slightest oppotunity of expessing himself o heself in the student govenment. It will be a joke fo one to become a candidate, and it will be a waste of time fo one to go to the polls. This then is what the clique intends when it attempts to oganize so powefully that thee will be no possibility of its being defeated and when it efuses to un eithe nonfatenity men o women upon its ticket. A Goup of Ten Futhe, no fatenity man who has not been selected to un upon the ticket will possibly be able to win a position in the student govenment. A goup of about ten men who appea to be undemocatic and who have in the past foced those unde them to take pope pat in the elections by eithe physical o financial means (indeed, many fatenity men on campus have confessed this to me) will dictate to the thiteen hunded students at William and May who shall be thei offices and what thei student govenment shall concen itself with. Why Exteme Measues To the agument that the allfatenity paty is essential to the well being of the fatenity system, and hence is justified, I take exception. The well being of the school in my opinion is moe impotant than the well being of any of its small pats. Futhe, if it is so obvious to evey fatenity man upon the campus that in this time of stess and dange the fatenities mast foget thei diffeences and must unite fo thei own potection, why must they take such exteme and dangeous means to insue that unity? Ovelooks Good Women If a man and a woman ae tuly in love with each othe, they do not wait fo thei fathes and mothes to help them in foming a pepetual union. They meely go ahead themselves. Still fu

As to thesystem we use in nominating ou candidates: The nominations ae made in a meeting in which all the fatenities ae equally epesented and the voting is all open. Does that sound like "dity politics"? The Fatenity Paty, in which all eleven fatenities paticipate, does not claim to epesent any one but the fatenities. They back no women, no independents, only fatenity men. We stand fo none of these deamy fantasies of utopianism that ae so pevalent, we ae fo impovement only. We ae just a goup of people offeing the best we have to do the best they can. Upon no othe plank do we stand. (Signed) A. Vick Swanson, Head of the Fatenity Paty..Dink iceneold CocaCola. Unless we make use of this weapon we can have no chance of duplicating the successful esistances of China and the USSR. Futhemoe ou democatic govenment will cumble fom within as much as fom the blows administeed by foeign fascism unless the majoity of the Ameican people, and finally the govenment, ealize that the economic cause esponsible fo the factionalism pesent in the United States today must be eadicated. If this wee done not only would the entie people become identified with the nations aims in this wa, but it would also mean that thee would be a much close identification between the people of this county and the peoples of Gemany, Italy, and Japan than now exists between the masses of the fascist populations and thei ules. We Must Have Economic Democacy, Without doubt the fundamental cause of factionalism in this county esults fom the temendous concentation of the contol of ou mateial esouces into the hands of an infinitesimally small goup of people, leaving the vast majoity of the population with absolutely no paticipation in the economic sphee of national existance. Indeed, the fatenities will lowe athe than aise thei station upon the campus if they continue to ally themselves with that which is unfai. And lastly, whethe o not all the essentially good men on the campus ae in fatenities, the pesent system planned would completely ovelook the talents of the good nonfatenity men of the substantial goup of good women, which, in my opinion, is at least equal to that of the men, I cannot see why those fatenity men who ae among the best on the campus eithe would need o would desie such means of being elected. The College Paty Opposed to this clique is the College Paty, an oganization of many defects, but an oganization which states as its main goal the binging of fai and clean politics to the campus of William and May by finding means to insue that no single goup upon the campus dominate politics. Whethe o not the paty is sincee is a matte of opinion. I pesonally believe them to be. It is a fact that they abide by a. witten constitution and it is a fact that they will not un candidates, no matte what thei chances of winning, if they will not agee to its basic ideals. In addition, it is a fact that they suppot candidates whethe man o woman, fatenity o nonfatenity, sooity o nonsooity.
