PM adzerm i t By DAVD SETH FREDMAN An aboted attempt to move the Commute College fom the basement of Gay College to the Billiads Room in the Union has aoused a political contovesy within the Commute College. Last yea, the Commute College Executive Council leaned that the Billiads Room 8 in the Union was vacant and that the Commute College had a '"9 pecent chance of getting in," Executive Council membe John Folcik said. 'Me Executive Council applied to the Union Govening Boad's House and Opeations Committee. Revesed Decsion The House and Opeations Committee appoved the move on Decembe 18 at 2 PM. But at a 5 PM meeting that same day, the committee ousted Chaiman Mak Minasi and evesed its decision. Afte the defeat of the petition, some Commute College offices began to have second thoughts about moving to the Union. Executive Council membe Gene Rollins voiced feas about being kicked out of the Union afte one yea and about educed sevices to commutes. Rollins said that the Commute College might un into some legal conflicts with Hon and Hadat and the Rainy' Night House ove giving donuts and coffee away fee to commutes. He also expessed his eluctance about moving to the Union because the Faculty Student Association might fobid the Commute College fom continuing to povide billiads and ping pong to commutes since the FSA povides chages fo the same sevices. Folcik said that he would be willing to move into the Union if the college can obtain an extended contact. "f the Commute College can get a thee to five yea contact in the Union then would want to move," he said. He added that if the usual Union policy of a one yea tco isant o c ed then the Commute Cobb w d be vey fooldo to lewe Gay Clleg. "1f we only get a one yea lease, then well become a political football afte that yea. G Quad Ma looke Joh n has b tow us tht if we lev Gay she wants to use the vacated mmea as a stoage oom. The Commute College is liable to become a $4, clb with no home." Commute Senato Mak West said the Executive Council is hesitating in eapplying to got space in the Union. "Thee ae 4,2 commutes. 6 LAtt w. w U Pue Politics To the Edito: t is unfotunate that Statesman must play the game of pesonal politics. Two examples of the pesonal polities appeaed in the Fiday, Januay 31 and Monday, Febuay 2 editions. The editoial paising the Togetheness Weekend efused to give cedit fo the planning and successful poduction of the weekend to Eale Wepin and Paul Tautman, meely because the editos ae in opposition to those two Polity leades. When Wepin and Tautman thought it up told them it would flop: thee wee only two days to put it togethe and thee would be little if any publicity. felt Polity would end up with shit on its face. was wong... 'm cleaning the shit off My face. t was the most successful poduction in yeas. SAB and the Union can lean fom Tautman and Wepin. Now admit it, editos, and eat shit, too. The othe example of had jounalism was pefomed by Statesman in the aticle concening the appointment of M. Walsh as Executive Diecto of Polity. The epote completely ignoed pevious epots of the situation. This appointment became news last semeste when the Polity Seach Committee selected anothe candidate, a candidate who membes of that Seach Committee still say was highly qualified. Howeve, Stan Geenbeg wanted his SASU fiend, Mossgabbe to be consideed and Mosagabe applied too late. Geenbeg tuned to his political allies, Mak Minasi and Al Saubet. With that, what should have been a selection based on competence then became a political football. Soddenly the Mina si Sc h ube t G een beg Syndome swept though the senate, infecting all membes. By the night of the voting the Syndome had split (a news stoy not epoted by Statesman): Schubet suppoted Wendt, Minasi oiginally suppoted Walsh, then switched to Wendt be foe the voting. Mossgabbe (who stated it all) eceived a handful of votes and was eliminated fom consideation. Geen beg switched to Wendt. The following week was heavy with politics ove a position which should be untouched by politics. Rumos had it that the Minasi Schubet Geenbeg Syndome wanted Wendt so they could contol him. On the night of the voting it was appaent that Wendt wuuld lose. Thiee was maneuveing to put off the vote. When the vote was called the MSG Syndome voted fo Mossgabbe yes, Mossgabbe, who had been eliminated fom the voting the week ealie because had eceived only a handful of votes. Wendt, once pomoted so heavily, eceived fou votes. Now Minasi had voted fo all of them, changing his mind faste than he changes his undewea. Unfotunately, this Syndome does not vote fo anything; it just votes against. This time Statesman missed the news. t was bad epoting. Stony Book is badly in need of good jounalism. K LSta tesmaiil [OPNONS Editoials nceasing Domitoy Secuity As the numbe of apes on campus inceases, we ealize that it is essential that college legislatues tighten secuity measues in each domitoy. Howeve, we oppose the decision made by Bauch (Kelly B) College esidents to lock all entances to the building in the ealy moning hous, allowing only those with oom keys to be admitted. This policy will ceate a hadship fo guests who wish to visit between the hous of 1 6 AM and fo college esidents who must meet thei guests at the doo. And what happens if a dom esident fogets his key, as often happens, and his oommate isn't in. n addition, the social atmosphee on campus will suffe without the fee access to the esidential colleges. We theefoe encouage the college legislatues to take altenative pecautions to potect esidents. Posting student voluntees at building entances between 1 and 6 AM can effectively decease the cime ate. Voluntees can be stationed nea an oncampus phone to call esidents when visitos aive, simila to the doomanintecom system employed in most apatment buildings. Unde such a system, students who have no legitimate eason fo enteing the building can be tuned away. nteim Public Safety Diecto Kenth Sjolin is planning to coodinate the closings of domitoies at night, upon appoval of each college legislatue. This, we feel, is not the best solution. n addition to a doomanintecom system, we uge M. Sjolin to concentate his enegy only to the einstitution of the student coluntee dom patols. the patols stated in Kelly Quad last yea, but neve expanded acoss campus. f this policy is implemented on a campuswide basis, it could be vey effective; while allowing the domitoies to keep 24hou access. We uge Sjolin to make povisions fo student patols in all of the esidential colleges. Moe impotant, we uge each college legislatue to implement such a secuity plan of its own o to appove Sjolin's poposal. n addition to dozens of unepoted apes, thee wee two epoted apes on campus last yea. Although we ae just beginning 1976, anothe ape has occued. Wednesday, a obbey occued in Geshwin College. Students stationed at dom itoy entances making peiodic checks thoughout the building will help eliminate futhe sexual assaults and make the doms a safe place to live. Judiciay Shenanigans (Pat ) The inmates have taken ove the.asylum. Wednesday night, the Polity Judiciay decided to emove Chaiman Richad Kon fo having the sense not to enfoce the Sunday decision to make Polity Teasue Mak Minasi take his desk out of the Polity Office. Replacing Kon is Dov Teiman, who was defeated by Kom last semeste fo the post. Such decisions can only lose what little espect the Judiciay still has. Fom a legitimate thid banch of student govenment, the 1membe body has disintegated into a flying cicus. Fome Justice Kon, who esigned fom the body afte he was ousted as chaiman, stood almost alone in tying to give the Judiciay any sot of statue. Now, it appeas, the Judiciay may ask Vice Pesident fo Student Affais Elizabeth Wadswoth to intevene in the dispute and cut off all Polity funds. Howeve, because Minasi 's desk is not a student, Wadswoth appeas to have no juisdiction in the matte. Then again, that neve botheed the Judiciay befoe. We agee with Minasi's obsevation that vin e wouic uebsui iuluil iay siavc uccun a political powe play on the pat of Teiman. Teiman has been attempting to oust Kon all semeste. Now that he has succeeded his mood has changed fom confontation to compomise. We can only wonde why the most militant justice is now appaently willing to compomise so easily. We applaud Minasi's and the Polity Council's actions as the only sensible way to deal with the Judiciay. They plan to ignoe the justices. The Union s fo Students The Stony Book Union: As the name would suggest to any liteate peson, the Union is fo studentsfist and foemost fo Stony Book students. That's not the impession anyone would have gotten had they tied to attend the dance held in the Union Balloom last Satuday night. The dance was sponsoed by Ebony 1, a goup which is not affiliated with any student oganization on campus. Appaently the dance was advetised off campus as attested to by the nine busloads of nonstudents fom New Yok City which attended the dance. To exacebate the situation, thee was a pohibitively high admissions pice fo students and the dinks wee also quite expensive. The atmosphee was one which hadly encouaged paticipation fom Stony Book students. onically this dance was held on the vey same weekend that Polity sponsoed a 72hou festival of activities to pomote student use of the Union facilities. Now we have leaned that anothe goup, Obitals, is planning anothe event to take place in the Union Balloom on Febuay 14. The flyes advetising the event give infomation on buses which will leave Booklyn and Queens bound fo the Stony Book Union. t seems that the Union is becoming a entahall fo paties, open to all of New Yok City. We stongly uge the Union officials to execise moe discetion in pemitting the use of the Union Balloom, especially petaining to outside oganizations. 've obseved that when moe can ae in the middle and ight hand lanes, taffic moves faste than when moe cas ae in the left hand lane. Thien ealized, politics was like this also. f one equates the geneal flow of taffic with social pogess, and the political feelings of individuals with the lanes they dive inleft lane fo libeals, middle lane fo modeates, and ight lane fo consevativeswe can see this similaity. Social change moves fowad fastest (the flow of taffic) when most individuals ae modeate politically (middle lane). The eason fo this is due to the fact, that when the left lane is clea, the fast cas (social moves) opeate feely and set the pace fo the est of the county (flow of taffic). Such was the case duing the Kennedy and Johnson yeas. PNople geneally stayed in thei lanes, and the speed that taffic flowed at. inceased (the Geat Society). t should be noted that this eal analogy did not apply in the case of Vietnam. As we all know, one cannot dive to Vietnam. At any atenixon came along, he wanted to be eveybody's Pesident. One might compae him to a dive who is hogging all the lanesthis of couse causes taffic congestion slowing down all taffic. Had Nixon emained in the ight lane whee he belonged, pehaps he could have been convinced to exit by the flow of taffic passing him (the votes). He even had an escot to tie up anybody who'd think of tying to pass him. The escot was made up of seveal motocyclesmost notewothy the Haldeman, the Ehlichman and the Mitchell. Pehaps you saw these bikes in the movie Easy Ride. But this wasn't enough fo Nixon. He even used govenment agencies (we might compae these to the Suffolk County Pakway Police), to haass othe individuals (motoists). A list of license numbes of cetain cas wee given to the Suffolk Police and pulled ove unjustly. This tied taffic up even moe. t inceased and inceased until finally taffic almost came to a standstill. Even when 1 tucks (senate) and 435 cas (congess) came up fom behind, Nixon would set up oad blocks (vetos). Meanwhile thee wee some motoists who wanted taffic to move faste (libeals). They woked on the poblem at the AAA (National Democatic Headquates). The Suffolk Police decided to find out what the AAA was up to, but as they enteed the building and the Nassau County Police (good guys) caught them. The Nixon guy who was hogging all the lanes told the Chief of the Suffolk Pakway Police not to say anything. Nixon even caused it to snow to distact thei attention fom the beakins (we call this a Doug Weisbege Taffic Causes A Jam cove up). Tuesday night's win ove Patt gave Stony Book a 3 ecod in confeence play tying them fo fist place with New Yok Tech and Booklyn. "We ae in good shape," Bash said, "but in ode to win it we will have to take all of ou emaining league games." That means the Patiots will have to beat secondplace Pace Univesity tonight. "Pace, is eally a good team, they have won nine in a ow, and it should be a geat game," Bash added. Against Patt, the Patiots held the ealy command, building a 166 lead. The Patiots box zone defense was keeping Patt away fom the hoop. But Stony Book was having no poblem penetating Patt's zone. Only some accuate long ange shots by Eddie Boo, who scoed 3 points, kept Patt clae. Patt only tailed 3528 at the half. "We could have won by 25 tonight if we wanted to," Bash said "but we tied to un a little too much and we substituted feely most of the second half." Then Bash spoke about the man he knows will be the main facto in the Pats' championship dive. "Keith was fantastic tonight," Bash said. "f he keeps playing aggessively as he did tonight see no eason why we shouldn't win it." Patt guad Joe Chilli ageed with Bash. He wound up shooting 13 fo 15 fom the floo with eight ebounds. Only the outside shooting of Boo made the final scoe. ' "t looks like the Pace game will be the big one," By ERC WASSER The thing that makes spots so exciting is the unexpectedlike when a lowly team ises up and outplays an obviously stonge opponent.
