3 PAYES AND EADINGS FO TODAY S EUCHAIST Collect Heavenly Lord, you long for the world s salvation: stir us from apathy, restrain us from excess and revive in us new hope that all creation will one day be healed in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. First eading Daniel 12: 1-3 In the third year of King Cyrus a word was revealed to Daniel. At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of a nguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Psalm Psalm 16 Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; I have said to the Lord, You are my Lord, my good above all other. All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble among the people. But those who run after other gods shall have their troubles multiplied. Their libations of blood I will not offer, nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; it is you who uphold my lot. My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; indeed, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand I shall not fall My heart, therefore, is glad and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the Pit. 4 Second eading Hebrews 10: 11-14, Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Gospel Mark 13: 1-8 As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings! Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; Post-Communion Prayer Gracious Lord, in this holy sacrament you give substance to our hope: bring us at the last to that fullness of life for which we long; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. 5 EXTA SINGES NEEDED FO CHISTMAS, PLEASE! The Festival of Lessons and Carols at All Saints will be on Sunday 23rd December at 6.00 pm. In the absence of a Director of Music, John Perkins will once again lead the choir. We warmly invite "extras" to join us for this occasion and thankfully several people have already offered. John writes: Come and sing with us at the Friday rehearsals leading up to the service and on the day itself. Many of the items should be familiar and I have tried to keep the whole thing fairly simple. The rehearsals will be on: Fridays 30 th November, 7 th December and 14 th December from 6.15pm until 7.30pm; Friday 21 st December from 6.15pm until 7.45pm Sunday 23 rd December from 4pm until 5.20pm All singers (children, teens & adults) very welcome: we are especially short of tenors! ADVENT QUIET(ISH) DAY Saturday 8th December 10am-3pm at All Saints Church, to include a simple lunch. Come and spend some time in prayer and preparation this Advent, with some seasonal music and reflections, and concluding with a Eucharist. For more info please see ev Carol or Julia Staves. TAIDCAFT AT ALL SAINTS The stall will be open today and next Sunday - if you need to collect Advent calendars or Christmas cards which you ordered, please do so. You may have heard that Traidcraft plc is in financial difficulties and was expecting to cease trading at the end of the year. ecently they announced that they hope to carry on, but in a different way. We plan to sell out our current stock, and then start up again after a break, if Traidcraft's new model is workable for us. 6 DATES AND EVENTS FO YOU DIAIES POSADA On Advent Sunday, 2nd December 2018, the Posada figures of Mary, Joseph and a donkey begin their journey around the parish. If you would like to offer them a resting place for a night, please sign your name on the list which will be at the back of Church today and next Sunday SO WHAT AE YOU WAITING FO? An Advent course written by evd Lucy Winkett, ector of St James Piccadilly, London, and a regular on adio 4's 'Thought for the Day'. In Advent we think about waiting not just for Jesus to be born in Bethlehem but for him to come back at the end of time. We are first and foremost Easter people, living in the light of the esurrection; but we are also Advent people: expectant, waiting, listening. This course is about time and what the Bible has to say about it. 4 sessions: Tuesdays 27 November, 4, 11, 18 December: pm at All Saints (Parlour) Thursdays 29 November, 6, 13, 20 December: pm at St James (Hall) Information from Peter Harbord: , growth@cofe-northallerton.org.uk SALVATION AMY CHISTMAS TOY APPEAL FO FAMILIES IN OU AEA The Salvation Army is inviting donations of new unwrapped toys or gifts suitable for boys and girls from birth to 16 years, to be given at Christmas to families in our area who have less than many of us. There will be a box at the back of church on Sundays throughout November if you would like to contribute. Financial donations (to purchase similar gifts) are also welcome: a collecting tin for these will be available (any cheques payable to The Salvation Army, please). 7 HAMBLETON FOODSHAE Needed particularly this week: there are currently no particular food shortages, but donations of BAGS FO LIFE to pack the food in would be very welcome. Margaret Brice, the current FoodShare co-ordinator, is retiring at Christmas and a replacement is being sought. It is a 25 hours p.w. paid post; full details and an application form from the HFS website The closing date for applications is 3rd December CHISTMAS FLOWE AANGING EVENING In Aid of The Children s Society Tuesday 27 November at 7.00 pm in omanby School Lucy ichardson (NADFAS) will demonstrate Flowers for Christmas and her arrangements will be raffled at the end of the evening. Tickets are 10 to include refreshments and are available from Jennifer (774485) or Julie (777250). MESSY CHUCH INVITES YOU TO THE MOVIES Saturday 1st December 11am at All Saints Church we're holding a free family film event showing The Star - an animation where animals become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told - the first Christmas. MESSY CHUCH LIGHT Follow the Star is the theme for our second Messy Church at St James held on Sunday 16th December 3pm-4.30pm Please collect a flyer from the back of St James Church to invite friends, family and neighbours. We pray for their healing and for courage in their fight against this disease. Monday 19th November We celebrate the life of St Hilda of Whitby and give thanks for her lifetime of continuous prayer and the care of her surrounding community. Tuesday 20th November The autumn brings wonderful colour as the landscape changes. We praise and thank God for this beautiful world we live in. Wednesday 21st November We pray for teachers in our town, our country and world-wide as they enable children to become educated, bright and socially aware - the holders of our future. Thursday 22nd November Give thanks to God that our town is a good place to live and pray for everyone who works here, especially the wonderful staff at the Friarage Hospital, our firefighters and our shopkeepers. Friday 23rd November We pray for the women with hidden sorrow who have lost babies at birth or miscarried a long-wanted child. We ask God s healing and comfort for them. Saturday 24th November Pray for people in your street or housing complex and for anyone you know who has a problem with loneliness or illness.
