Fathe Theodoe Hesbugh, now n his.35th and final yea at the Univesity, pesently holds the longest tenue among active pesidents of Ameican univesities. Hesbugh told faculty membes that the Univesity must continue to pusue ts goal of geate quality n faculty, students, administatos and tustees. "t s the people who make the Univesity," he said. "Of couse, pesidential leadeship can and will help, but what is essentially needed most s continued leadeship up and down the line." The pesident encouaged faculty membes to act as moal and ntellectual leades of the Univesity by the ish adage to "keep the faith, pusue the vision." "Whateve we say, we educate by ou lives," he said. "Ou wods speak as we teach, but ou actions shout, believe St. Augustine said." Hesbugh said both he and Fathe Edmund Joyce, Note Dame's executive vice pesident, have seen much pogess made towad founde Fathe Eduad Sain's goal of ceating a geat Catholic univesity. "We have seen a good measue of his deam come to eality, thanks to hundeds of valiant cot- iaboatos," the pesident said. "But neithe of us believes that we ae anywhee nea the final stages of Sain's deam." Togethe, Hesbugh and Joyce have spent moe than 100 yeas at Note Dame. They both aived as undegaduates n the ealy 19.30s. Hesbugh ecounted the histoy of the Univesity's beginning n 1842 by tacing the path of Soln, a Holy Coss piest hailing fom Fance. "Fo half a centuy, he changed this place fom a wildeness to a spiitual oasis fo leaning," Hesbugh said of Sain. "The Univesity would neve have.made it without him." Ason suspected cause of fie behind ACC By MRAM HLL Senio Staff Repote Ason s the suspected cause of a fie that damaged seveal boxes of constuction equipment ealy Satuday moning behind theacc, Note Dame Fie Depatment officials said. No one was njued in the fie, which began at about 2:20a.m., accoding to Diecto of Fie Safety Jack Bland. The equipment was being used n the constuction of indoo tennis couts located behind gate 6A of the ACC. Associated Pess WASHNGTON (ap) -Pesident Reagan told the Ameican people Monday that the United States and the Soviet Union "ae close than eve befoe" to eliminating ballistic missiles and said he emains eady "to pick up whee we left off' in an attempt to beak the mpasse ove the futue of Sta Was. n a speecn ooaocast nationally fom the Oval Office, Reagan eviewed the collapse of his summit talks on Sunday with Soviet leade Mikhail Gobachev in Reyl\lavik, celand. " cannot pomise, no can any pesident pomise, that the talks n celand o any futue discussions with M. Gobachev will lead nevitably to geat beakthoughs o momentous teaty signlngs," Reagan said. And he nsisted that "we pefe no ageement than to bing home a bad ageement to the United States." Reagan acknowledged that Gobachev gave no ndication "when o whethe" he would come to the United States fo the summit the leades went to celand to pepae fo. "Ou invitation stands," the pesident said. "We continue to believe additional meetings would be useful. But that's a decision the Soviets must make." Afte efusing to compomise with Gobachev on the testing of his hypothetical stategic defense system known fomally as the Stategic Defense nitiative, Reagan said, "We ae deallig now fom a position of stength, and fo that eason we have t within ou gasp to move speedily with the Soviets towad even moe beakthoughs." Reagan had woked on his speech up to the last hou. A U.S. official said that speechwltes ewoked dafts that had been pepaed in advance, and the pesident himself made some last-minute changes n the text that the White House customaily has eady well n advance of Reagan's delivey. Reagan's national secuity ad-. vise, Vice Adm. John M. Poindexte, told epotes Monday that U.S. ams negotiatos in Geneva will ty to salvage elements of the accod that won tentative appoval at the summit. Meanwhile, an official taveling with Secetay of State Geoge P. Shultz en oute with the secetay home fom Bussels, Belgium said that Shultz will attend an intenational human ights confeence n Vienna in ealy Novembe, and may at that time meet with Soviet Foeign Ministe Eduad Shevadnadze. n his speech, Reagan said, "Ou deas ae out thee on the table." He was efeing to the two supepowes' unfinished ageements to phase out medium and long-ange nuclea missiles by "They won't go away," he said. "We ae eady to pick up whee we left off... When a subject appeaed that demonstated the gadual tyanny of consevative opinion on Ameicans' basic pesonal ights, put the aticle in a file folde. By the end of the summe, the folde was bulging. The lis( of news events llllustatlng '80s social consevatism which appeaed just ove the summe s long. The United States Supeme Cout upholds a Geogia Jaw banning sodomy -between heteosexuals as well as homosexuals. The moal beliefs suounding sodomy ae not the question hee. Rathe, what's impotant is that the highest cout n the county has technically aftlmed the ight of pollee to ente pivate citizens' bedooms and posecute them accoding to thei sexual pefeences. t doesn't seem to matte to the Supeme Cout that t's going a bit fa to ty and egulate the manne n which consenting adults engage n sex. What find oppessive s the fact that the couts can even conside t within thei juisdiction to mpose thei view of moality on citizens. And thee's moe. Censoship s eaing its ugly head again these days n a much moe subtle -and dangeous -manne than book bunings and such. A petentiously named oganization called the National Fedeation of Decency was able to pesuade Attoney Geneal Edmund Meese's Commission on Ponogaphy that 7-Eleven stoes wee distibutos of pon because they sold Playboy and Penthouse magazines. The commission subsequently sent a lette to Southland Copoation, 7 -Eleven's paent company, ndicating they might be llf,ted as selles of ponogaphy n the Commission's final epot. No company wants the edtape and bad publicity of legal and govenment hassles hanging ove its head. Of couse 7-Eleven dopped Playboy and Penthouse fom ts shelves. Meese's govenment commission succeeded n detemining both the mechandise a pivate company wished to sell and the type of publication many membes of the public wished to buy. Speaking of Meese's so-called pon commission, on what gounds can the govenment justify assembling 11 "expets" who head the testimony of 208 "victims" of ponogaphy only to conclude that ponogaphy is "hamful?" One so-called witness testified that as a "nomal, healthy" boy of 12 he found a deck of cads depicting had-coe ponogaphic scenes. He claimed that his subsequent ecod of shoplifting. homosexual encountes, dug-taking and even "watching R ated movies on HBO and Showtlme cable" was caused by the set of cads. Accoding to a July May Jacoby Accent Edito aticle n The New Republic, much of the man's testimony had been witten by the commission's staff. So my consolation is that the cuent socially consevative atmosphee, like the libeality of the '60s and '70s, will pobably eventually wea tself out. As fa as can tell fom my study of Ameican histoy, national moods seem to move n cycles. Ten yeas fom now the pendulum will likely have swung too fa n the opposite diection, and you'll find me ailing against the idiculously libeal attitudes dominating Ameican life. Why can't we just find a happy medium and stay thee? A final discouagement to ationality aives n the fom of the eligious fundamentalist Pat Robetson, who many expect to un fo pesident n '88. How can any easonable peson, no matte how eligious he o she may be, take seiously a man who claims n a fund-aising lette about the Michigan delegate selection pocess that "We saw the hand of God going befoe us in Michigan, affiming ou ~vey step?'' Who is to say what God is thinking? f"o that matte, who s to say conclusively that thee even s a God? Easmus Books Stash 1027 E. "Founde's Day s a time fo us to hono the college and all those who have given to t and made t what t s today," stated Lisa Lawle, Taditional Events Commissione of the Student Govenment. Tuesday, Octobe 14, 1986, -page.3 Nickie's dodges demolition fo now By MARLYN BENCHK Assistant Saint May's Edito Nickle's, an established student ba, tempoaily was spaed the wecking ball at South Bend 's Code Enfocement heaing Monday. Poceedings office Lay Cliffod, howeve, detemined the cost fo epai pesented by Nickle's owne Nick Bilello and by Code Enfocement Committee nspecto Stanley Molenda must be moe consistent n ode fo the taven to avoid demolition. Molenda epoted the cost fo epai of the bu1ldlng would equal $.35, 000. Lay Spombeg. Bilello's contacto, estimated the cost of epai fo the facility to be $5,000. "Thee has to be some sot of ageement. Eithe then s one list which both paties agee on o two sepeate lists. f thee ae two sepeate lists, 'll agee upon which figues will be used as the estimate," Cliffod said. Poblems with the building nclude holes n the main oof, a otted oof on a fist stoy addition, missing guttes, buckled walls, peeling paint, extensive wate damage and tash and debis nside, accoding to Molenda. Molenda nspected the nteio of the building on Aug. 28. "Thee was an ndication of odents, but did not see any myself," he said. "Thee was evidence to the pollee depatment the building had been boken nto. Rooms (on the second floo) looked like they wee being occupied. We wee afaid gangs wee tying to get n," Molenda said. Bilello said many of the poblems concening the condition of the building wee the fault of the neighbohood. "Afte the ba closed, vandals looted the popety when was out of town, and neighbos used the aea as a local dump sevice," Bilello said. "The epai needs ae cosmetic." Bilello said, "No wok has been done because want to walt until decide what want to do with the popety. Spombeg woked on the facility a numbe of times ove the last 20 yeas. "Most of the wok that needs to be completed s cosmetic. The building looks quite sound to me aside fom the holes n the oofing which wee fomed by the weathe," said Spombeg. Spombeg admitted he has had no pio expeience n oofing a building and s a pofessional plumbing and heating contacto. "Fo a stuctue this size, demolition would cost about $10,000," said Molenda. Neighbos wee allowed to comment. "The business n the neighbohood should benefit the people living thee. The business should be just as concened about the neighbohood as they ae about the actual business," said Renelda Robinson, diecto of the Noth East Neighbohood Cente. Nickle's egained ts license fom the ndiana Alcoholic Beveage Commission n May, afte the ba was closed fo 10 months following state liquo law violations. The taven had been unable to open because of the dangeous condition of the building. Cliffod added the estimates ae due by Oct. 20. Banned goup looking at options By CLFF STEVENS Senio Staff Repote Fome membes of the banned goup RASTA ae weigh ng the options available fo continuing the goup's wok f the the Office of Student Affais ejects thei appeal fo einstatement, accoding to Sean Eves, fome co-leade of the goup. Although no definite plans have been made, pending decision on the appeal, Eves said possible options nclude woking though an existing campus goup with compatible goals o foming a new oganization. "The options open depend on the decision," he said. Rally Against Stavation (RASTA) was banned by the Univesity fo the pesence of alcohol and dug use at an event held by the goup last yea. The Oveseas Development Netwok has expessed an nteest n woking with the fome membes of RASTA. said Eves. But fome RASTA membe Rafael Benavente said he doubted othe goups could achieve the banned goup's goals. " don't think the goals of othe goups could match what we wee afte," he said. Eves said he found no eason to believe the U~.slty would pohibit the fo..jn of a new goup with the same cause as RASTA. " pesume that they could not efuse a new goup with the same goal to aid staving people and pomote the cultue of Afica," he said. The pime objective of the goup's fome membes, howeve, will be obtaining the einstatement of RASTA until the decision s made, said Eves. Eves said appoximately 20 fome membes have egulaly gatheed nfomally to discuss the goup's futue and wok fo einstatement. He said such effots esulted n the dafting of the appeal lette submitted Sept. 26 to Fathe David Tyson, vice pesident fo student affais. Eves questioned the delay n Tyson's esponse. He said the Offlee of Student Affais failed to delive ts pomise to etun a decision by the end of last week. Tyson's secetay said Tyson was busy n meetings and unavailable fo comment Monday. She was unable to say whethe a decision had been eached on the appeal. But Eves said fome membes emain committed to the banned goup despite the delay. "The longe we have to walt. the moe detemined we ae to get ou goup back togethe again," said Eves. "nteest s definitely not dying out." Poblems with paietals poposal debated at Student Senate meeting By TRPP BALTZ News Edito Poblems with the Student Senate's paletals poposal wee discussed at Monday night's senate meeting. Last week the Campus Life Council d4\clded to delay until its next meeting a vote on the poposal, which seeks to lengthen visitation hous and educe the punishment fo ovenight paletals violations. "My peception s that we hadn't discussed t enough amongst ouselves," Student Body Pesident Mike Switek said. "But we'e definitely not going to give up on lt." he added. Switek said he believes the esolution should be ewitten befoe t goes befoe the CLC again. Student Senato Bian Holst. one of the CLC student epes.entatives, said pat of the debate on the poposal nvolved "students disageeing with students." "t didn't look good fo ou cause," he added. Holst said the CLC neve eally discussed the "fundamental ssue" of paletals, but athe the woding of the poposal. "To this day, still don't know f the administation agees with us on the seveity of paletals punishments," he added. Judicial Commissione Mala Cinton said the administation does not feel that n evey case an ovenight paletals violation necessaily nvolves dismissal o suspension. "Why s thee an option fo suspension o dismissal?" she asked. Holst said t was mpotant the poposal do moe than just change woding. "f t's a cosmetic change, all we'e doing s fooling the students." Cinton said t would be not be possible to get a change n the philosophy of the cuent paletals violation. "Thee's no way," she said. Accoding to Cinton, John Goldick. associate vice pesident fo esidence life, said two out of evey fou ovenight patetats violations esult n suspension o dismissal. Student Senato John Gadine pointed out that the body was usually aguing semantics on the paletals ssue. "We don't want to get too lofty," he added. Senio Class Pesident Dave Miklos questioned whethe othe student epesentatives had an ssue "moe pessing" than paletals. Switek esponded that the senate should begin woking on moe wothwhile ssues. n othe business, Switek announced Vce Pesident fo Student Affais Fathe David Tyson has not yet esponded to an appeal by RASTA fo einstatement. "What 'd like to do," said Switek. "s send a lette encouaging (the administation) to eview thei case." Switek said he would wite the lette n the next few days and have t available n his office fo senate membes to sign.

The following is a satie on the Reagan admil}istation's affimative action policies. ltlee s a lot of talk going aound about abolishing affimative action and the quota system. Appaently, the Reagan administation thinks affimative action and quotas ae outdated and unneeded pogams. This pesumably stems fom an attitude affiming that unequal oppotunity due to acism and discimination has been neutalized duing a mee twenty yeas of equality unde the law. Michael Foning in the minoity Knowing that equality unde the law does not automatically eadicate acism, and thus unequal oppotunity, and thinking thee was some meit to opening doos whee they wee closed befoe, was supised when head these umos. So decided to call the White House and flnd out exactly why ou govenment wants to scap these pogams. To my supise, the White House has a special epesentative, whose sole pupose is to explain the administation's position on this ssue. "What it all comes down to," the epesentative told me, "is that we believe eveyone is basically equal now. A mee 20 yeas of equality unde the law has affected such an attitude change that we have succeeded in ceating a multiacial society fee fom acism and discimination leading to unequal oppotunity." "Ae you saying that thee s absolutely no nequality o discimination n the United States?" asked ncedulously. "Don't be absud!" the epesentative eplied. "Of couse, in a fee society, thee ae bound to be a few mino inequalities, o even a few scatteed cases of discim nation, but cetainly no eal poblems exist." "Then why is the povety ate of blacks.31 pecent and that of Hispanics 29 pecent while the povety ate among whites is only 11 pecent?" "Why is the median family income fo blacks only $16,610 fo compaed with $29, 152 fo whites?'' "Why is pe capita income only $6,840 fo blacks, $6,610 fo Hispanics and $11,670 fo whites?'' "Why then s the median net woth of white households $.39, 1.35 while the median net woths of black and Hispanic households ae $.3,.397 and $4, 91.3 espectively?" "Why s the unemployment ate only seven pecent among white teenages compaed with 41 pecent among black teenages?" "And why, if blacks epesent oughly ten pecent of the total population, do they epesent less than thee pecent of all doctos, lawyes, television and adio station ownes, and less than one pecent of all elected officials in the United States?'' pompted. "t s mostly because of govenment funded pogams and govenment intefeence," the epesentative told me. "You see, eve since Civil Rights was instituted 20 yeas ago, society has miaculously efomed tself so that thee is vitually no discim nation o inequal oppotunity as thee was befoe the Civil Rights movement. "Well, no..." stated. "You see? Why should we have these idiculous pogams, when thee is no discimination to begin with?" the epesentative exclaimed excitedly. "Well, actually," said, "thee ae pecious few minoities at Note Dame to disciminate against. You see, Note Dame doesn't actively ecuit qualified minoities as othe nstitutions do. Pobably the only thing that would make them do so is a quota." "Ah, but hee s the clinche," the epesentative said. "Quotas ae no good because they advocate evese discimination." "But qualified people get ~ected fom univesities o jobs evey yea, simply because moe than enough qualified people apply. though quotas simply gave qualified mlnoltles an oppotunity whee thee was none befoe?" "Actually, that s a widespead misconception. Quotas keep qualified whites fom getting what they deseve. The oppotunity is thee fo the minoities, they just won't take it." "You see, we can't keep asking the white majoity to make sacifices fo the minoities though affimltlve action, quotas o taxes that pay fo social pogams, college loans o job taining pogams t s time fo the minoities to stat doing these things fo themselves. They have constitutional equality, what moe do they want? Ou administation does not advocate giving things away on a sil ve platte. We believe in a stong wok ethic." "So what you ae saying is that all the pevious pogams instituted to help minoities have at best wosened the situation and that we should eliminate o dastically educe thei pactice, thus giving minoities the incentive to pull themselves up by thei own bootstaps?" The lectue was a fine, compehensive eview of taditional and ecent theoies of women's moality. The balance of my lette coects the aticle's main naccuacies. Fist, Giffin discussed theoetical views of women's moality; she did not pesent a conclusive statement of t as Readon's title mplies. Fo example, she eviewed some of the taditional depeciations of women's moality made by pominent male philosophes and theologians. Second, Readon's most egegious eo was he misepesentation of Giffin's efeence to Feud. Accoding to Readon, Giffin ageed with Feud's view that "the main diffeence between men and women s that women use moe emotion n thei judgements." The tuth s that Giffin citicized this view. She cited t as one way that women's moality has been maligned by male philosophes. Thid, Giffin did not expess ageement with any of the moal theoists she analyzed, ncluding Lawence Kohlbeg and Caol Gilligan. She appealed fo caeful, citical analysis of the new moal theoists, such as Gilligan n ode to avoid the kind of steeotyping that limits tadltlonal.theoles. Fouth, Readon neglected to epot the most nnovative point of Giffin's talk: he counsel to seek econciliation between the ovely one-sided "male" and "female" moal theoies of the past and pesent. n shot, Giffin's lectue was one of the best 've head on the subject. Coodinatos fo the pogams ae D. Anthony Black, associate pofesso of Histoy at Saint May's and D. Potia Spanu, diecto of the Saint May's Rome pogam. Accoding to Black, "the oppotunities fo wold tavel, to see and expeience othe societies and cultues ae mmeasuable." Pehaps this s why the tunout fo these pogams has been so positive. Last yea,.35 students attended the London pogam, but "thee have been as many as 1.30 who sign up," says Black, "and then we have to set a limit." Last yea's Rome pogam was cancelled due to a lack of nteest which was caused by the teoist activities n Euope. When asked f he foesees the same poblem occuing this yea, Black answes with an enthusiastic "No. We can't pedict what will be happening then, we can only hope. The Honos Pogam was stated n the fall of by Pofesso David Solomon. The pogam was ceated patly to eplace the old C. A. P pogam, which fell apat in the ealy 1980's. The pogam s designed to be challenging. t s not just a moe difficult vesion of the egula couses. The best pofessos ae assigned to the honos classes to povide a good backgound fo the students, who ae encouaged to apply geate amounts of input to the honos classes. Honos gades ae not weighted any diffeently than DR. DAVD SOLOMON those of egula couses; - - howeve, some fom of ecogniatlve and flouish academically. The second eason was to combine the Ats and Lettes College with the College of Science by making nnovative couses available to the colleges' students. Solomon explained how one gets nto the Honos Pogam. He said that fist the Admissions Boad selects the ncoming Feshman class, then the top 100 applications ae sent to tion will be given to the students who gaduate fom the pogam. Exactly what type of cedit sn't known as of yet, but some deas such as a special diploma ae being discussed. This yea, the flst membes of the Honos Pogam will gaduate. As pat of thei final yea, these students ae equied to wite a thesis pape. Fo the Ats and Lettes students, the thesis topics ae up the the stu- dents. Vitually any topic can be chosen, even f t doesn't diectly elate to the student's majo. Each student will also wok with a pofesso who will guide the student though the witing pocess. The Science students ae, fo the most pat, doing some type of eseach thesis. Even though Solomon will not be unning the Honos Pogam next yea, he doe.. ; have some deas fo ts futue. He hopes to be able: to send n..:,,, ~es about the pogam to high school students befoe they apply to Note Dame in an effot to ecuit students who might not be othewise applying to this school. By BRAN O'OARA Spots Wite t s said that n ode to appeciate life's high points, t's necessay to expeience life's valleys as well. f that s ndeed the case, the Note Dame volleyball team can appeciate thei success on the cout this season afte falling victim to the Univesity of Kentucky last fiday evening. losing 5-15, ,8-15. The ish ae now 14-5 oveall and.3-0 n Noth Sta Confeence play. Fiday night was a long one fo Coach Lambet and his team. The ish dopped thee staight games to a team fo only the second time this season, and the fist time since Septembe 6. "We showed up and we wee behind 14-1 befoe we could say hello," ecalled Lambet. The ish dopped the fist game 5-15 while stuggling to a kill pecentage of a lowly. 0.36, no match fo Kentucky's highpoweed.400 kill pecentage. "Fankly, we wee not eady fo them," said Lambet. " hope a valuable lesson was leaned- you have to be pepaed to compete wheneve you walk onto the floo. This time we wee not. The only thing we can do s not let t happen again. f we lean fom t, this could be a vey valuable thing fo us the est of the yea. f we don't, we'e n touble." On Satuday the ish appeaed to be back to thei usual fom. Led by Zanette Bennett's 12 kills, the ish jumped on top of Louisville ealy and coasted to an easy thee game sweep, thei loth sweep n 14 victoies. The Women's tennis beezes by Ohio, dops following match to Pudu.e. By SHELA HOROX Spots Wite Pat of being a young team s leaning that talent alone is not always the deciding facto n athletics. The ish easily.efeated Ohio Univesity, 8-1, on tiday but lost to Pudue the following day by the same scoe. Against Ohic, the ish captued five-of-six singles matches and the thee doubles matches. Co-captain 1 jmmy Schmidt's and teamn te Stephanie Tolstedt's mat es lasted thee sets. Schmidt :!Utlasted Cheyl Pomlnskl , 6-.3, but Tolstedt was not as fotunate n he match, which ended n a 4-6, 6-4, 6-.3 loss to Jennie Blachut. Co-captain Michelle Dasso defeated Kelly Achibald 6-2, 6-2, Allee Lob -.: beat Taci Keenan 6-2, 6-.3, Natalie llig downed Polly Gay 7-6, (7-2 tiebeake), 6-0, and Resa Kelly took cae of Janet Bass 6-4, 6-0. All thee doubles matches wee taken by the ish. Dasso and Tolstedt defeated Novak and Gay 6-.3, 6-0. Schmidt and Kelly beat Bass and Keenan 6-.3, Assistant Coach Steve Simone was especially encouaged with the pogess of Schmidt and Kelly. "Tammy and Resa ae playing eally well togethe," said Simone. "Each match they play they'e gaining moe confidence." Lohe and llig's win ove Blachut and Pomlnskl completed the ish sweep. Afte splitting the fist two sets and dakness appoaching. ules pemit the last set to be played as a tiebeake, if the match has aleady been decided. Lohe and llig pevailed.3-6, 6-2, (7-0 tiebeake). The ish downfall against Pudue was thei own lack of ntensity. Seveal matches just seemed to get away fom the ish. "n a few matches we wee up eithe 4-1 o 5-2 n the thid set and we didn't pull t out," said Head Coach Michele Gelfman. "We basically beat ouselves." n singles Lohe lost n thee sets to Kista Scheck 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 and llig likewise lost he thee set match 6-4,.3-6, 6-.3 to Jennife Allen. Dasso fell to Kls Dicken 6-.3, 6-2 and Tolstedt, afte being up 5-2 n the fist set eventially lost 7-5, 6-2 to Julia Chambes. Schmidt was defeated by Kelly Caig 6-4, 6-2 and Kelly lost to shelly Weine, 6-.3, 6-1. n doubles play, Schmidt and Kelly accounted fo the lone ish win. They fought back afte dopping the fist set to Scheck and Llghtvoet fo a.3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victoy.. Lohe and llig came up shot against Caig and Dicken 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 and Dasso and Tolstedt lost a tough thee set match n which all the sets wee decided by tiebeakes. Unfotunately Dasso and Tolstedt came up on the losing end, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Afte weekend play the ish ecod stood at 2-4, and despite the disappointing loss to Pudue, Gelfman emains confident about the futue. The Pudue match was simply a lesson n mental toughness. match only lasted 54 minutes. "t eally wasn't even close," said Lambet. "We played with confidence. Against Kentucky what distubed me most was when we wee ahead, we played like we wee behind." The ish now see a week's beak befoe thei next match. Satuday they leave fo Ohio State to begin a five-game oad tip that ncludes the Buckeyes, Geogetown, Duke, Noth Caolina State and Viginia. "This is the pivotal pat of ou season, especially the match against Ohio State," said Lambet. "f we beat them, and they ae cuently nea the top of the Big Ten, it will give us the cedibility we need." Despite the beak in action befoe hitting the oad again, Coach Lambet does not plan to let the memoy of the Kentucky loss slip out of his team's memoy. Fan suppot slumping when needed most Recently one aspect of Note Dame athletics has fallen nto a slump. t jumped to a stong stat at the beginning of the school yea, but has ecently fallen on had times. No, am not talking about the football team, although bet many people wee dying to ead an aticle ln this space citicising the team's ecent play. Don't deny t - was n the stands also. head all the comments and cuses, as well as the negative pedictions of plays about to occu. Many people would love to ead t n pint. But 'm not going to wite about the team. nstead want to talk about you, the fans. Actually was going to leave football out of this, but afte obseving the fans' pefomance at the Pitt game, t had to be ncluded. don't want to go though all the excuses why the cowd didn't chee. n fact want to get away fom the pespective of the last couple yeas and look at the spiit that has pevaded most of the histoy of Note Dame spots, and n this case football. To do this, talked to Fathe Jim Riehle, vasity spots chaplain and Pesident of the Monogam Club. He had ealie talked with alumni, ncluding one fom the football teams, and togethe they ealized a distubing tend. "(The football alumnus) said that the playes (n ) neve thought about having to flap thei ams aound to get the team going." notes Relhle. "He couldn't believe t, and noticed t myself." Eveyone emembes how the kickoff team has had to act like cheeleades n ode to get the cowd going n the Pitt game. No spontanlety-just a ousing chee on cue, and then quiet. You may emembe all the way back to the Michigan game, whee the fans cheeed like neve befoe. The cowd actually did play a pat n that game, and the fans wee a m~o eason why the team was able to match the nationally-anked Wolveines. But like said, 'm not going to concentate on just the football team. Let's talk socce and volleyball, the two spots which boast the best fall spots ecods. ~dslumplng attee_~_dance figues. Pete Gegen Club Cone The socce team s n ts thid yea of upgading. compiling a ecod of Attendance was stong the fist few games as the ish destoyed lesse opponents like Pudue and Minnesota. And n case you missed t, the ish tied the Zips, 1-1, n one of the finest games eve played by Note Dame. O how about the 14-5 volleyball team, which has ewitten the ecod book with ts seven-game win steak and smashing victoies ove llinois State and DePaul. Attendance fo the team's fist home match last month was 50.3, but has steadily deceased to a ecent total of know socce and volleyball ae not the most popula spots, but do know thee s nteest. Finally, we could look at the membes of these teams not as athletes, but as students just like you and me. You know, they just might like a little suppot fom thei classmates. They ae epesenting ou school, afte all. Take the football team, once again. Though my own nfomal suvey, thee appeas to be a lage numbe of students leaving fo beak Fiday, offeing excuses which amount to "Thee's no eason to stay." 'm sue you fellow students - mean those football playes - don't need you suppot, ight? nstead of answeing. just ead what a peson who has been with Note Dame spots, and n paticula football, fo the last 15 yeas, believes s the answe. " feel the team needs the suppot of the student body," says Riehle. "The team s going though some tying times, and t needs the suppot. The playes ae tying vey had to win." Even f you ae leaving befoe the game, thee is a pep ally Fiday night at 7 n Stepan Cente. Moe than eve the team needs the suppot, and the Note Dame students should be able to offe it, especially because they ae the wold's geatest student body, as was claimed afte the Michigan game. But that's not all. The socce and volleyball teams may be on the oad now, but they etun at the beginning of Novembe. The socce team will host top-anked (as n No. 1 in the county) Evansville on Nov. 9, and the volleyball team has a fou-gamesin-five-days homestand beginning Nov. 5 with matches against Loyola, Dayton and Nothwesten. My hopes ae high fo both the teams and the fans ( ty not to let mundane things like ecods affect my suppot fo the teams.) But stil.l have a funny feeling that will be able to wite this type of column again!'tlfdway though the basketball serson.
