In the season, Moan jcoed 379 points to cack the pevii ecod of 373 points set by Jim Schlimm in 950, As of the witing»f this aticle, witten pio to last t's game with Rhode Island UniBob had scoed 34 points Hid thus needed 38 points to set a D< v mak. As he has been aveaging K points a game, the chances fo his b aking t h e ecod tonight appea t ellent. I t has long been the contention of It s wite and of the COWL spots c jatment that Bobby Moan is one o the geatest ball playes in New E ^land, and by fa the best small n n in this secto. Besides being the -t polific scoe P.C. has eve t 'iwn, Moan is both an excellent cubble and ball handle. It is extmely gatifying to all concened v th his caee to note that his accomplishments ae at last being ecognised thoughout the East, as is evidenced by the fact thaht his feats have ecently been extolled in leading Bo«ton newspapes. 2 THE COWL, FEBRUARY. 953 Catholic Pess Month This is Catholic pess month, but to a cetain extent it will occasion little enthusiasm and even less action among Catholics. Pehaps they will buy a few moe copies this month, o, if sufficiently moved, they might even subscibe to a news ogan. Will they ead the pape? Most likely they will glance at it but not with any geat inteest. Why the indiffeence? Obviously when placed alongside such giants as the TIMES and the TRIBUNE o the yellow jounalism of the DAILY NEWS o MIRROR, Catholic newspapes will usually be passed ove. Thei make-up is not as impessive, no is thei news sensational. Life in Ameica is big and fast, and Ameicans like thei newspapes to be the same. Anothe eason is that in some cases Catholic editos have given the impession that othodoxy extends to all fields; that thee is a unifom Catholic opinion of China policy, on McCathy, on Spain. Because of this, many Catholics do not even bothe to ead the pape fo they feel that thee is no news of inteest to theni. and even if thee wee, it would not make any diffeence because they have no choice to eithe agee o disagee with the opinions. Thee is among Catholics, and it is ight that thee is a unifom total view of eality but thee can be diffeence of opinion in how a cetain item of news fits into this total view. Fotunately, as in all things, chaity eigns. The Catholic pess in Ameica is good and it is healthy. It can be bigge and bette; but this demands inteest and help fom Catholics. To buy a newspape because it is Catholic is noble but then not to ead it is to defeat its vey pupose. The papes ae in existence. Buy them. Read them. Suppot them! Sell them! Contovesy Can Be Beneficial Elsewhee in this issue thee appeas a stoy concening a esignation. It is an impotant stoy because it bings a long smoldeing situation to light. The fact that a man has esigned fom the Student Congess is unfotunate, but it is the situation behind the esignation that is even moe so. That I he Student Congess has small pestige on the campus is well known; the scant attendance at its meetings attests to that fact. Afte yeas of existence, it has only ecently asseted its juisdictional powe ove individual classes. Whee to lay the blame fo this state of affais is unimpotant ight now. What is impotant is that the status quo of the Congess be ectified. The Congess has a vey useful function on the campus, but this function can only be ealized when its membes ae able and willing to do thei pat in making it wok. M. AscioJla's esignation seems to point to the fact that this is not the case. Undoubtedly the esignation will cause contovesy; it should because it points to an uns.-voy situation. Howeve, while contovesy can be >eneficial, it can also be acimonious. We hope the latte will not be the case. Rathe we hope that the Congess be stimulated into a self-analysis that will benefit both itself and the entie student body. Quaestiones Disputatae If thee wee no diffeence of opinion among men, this wold of ous would be quite dull. By the same token, a newspape would make dull eading if it did not take stands on issues that ae contovesial and only stuck to epoting staight news. A newspape exists to be ead o else it seves no useful pupose; contovesy gets people to ead. In the past, and it shall be so in the futue too, the COWL has pinted editoials that expess a cetain point of view. If ou eades have disageed with these opinions, we have no quael with them. Ou only gipe is with those who because they disagee, level attacks at the entie newspape. Ou editoials ae not meant to beat an opinion into anyone. We offe aguments in an attempt to convince someone to ou position. If we fail, we shed no teas. If we succeed. we feel a sense of satisfaction. If ou eades disagee and can offe bette aguments against ou position, the columns of the COWL ae open to them. In shot, it is a case of put up o shut up. Fom The Towe: Top Pop Cop Mopped Up By Sou Towe Powe "MOTHER OF TRUTH"... exclaim these Povidence College singes as they ende one of thei selections at the ecent joint concet with Emmanuel College in Hakins Hall. Afte dinne was seved, a social hou was conducted in conjunction with the Fias Club. Community singing and ecodings featued the entetainment. Quately's Second Edition Will Featue New Wites The next issue of the Alembic, college quately magazine, will be on the stands sometime duing the week of Febuay 22, Heny Giffin, Edito, announced yesteday. Giffin also equested all staff membes to be pesent at the COWL office on this Fiday aftenoon at 2:30 fo the yeabook photogaph. This edition will featue an aticle entitled, "They Ae Also Catholics," by J o h n Matiska, the publication's associate edito. M. Matiska's aticle deals with the little known subject of the Catholic Chuch's Easten Rite. Robet Hoye is epesented by an essay on the Catholic family and education. In the fiction line, Phil Giffin, Wilton Gevais, David Kal, and Richad Muphy have contibuted shot stoies to this edition. Both Kal and Muphy ae membes of the feshman class. The poety depatment is managed by Joseph D. Gomes, who is making his second appeaance, Chales Gnys, and Paul F. Fotin, also a feshman. Anyone who wishes to submit a manuscipt may do so by mailing it to the Alembic office o binging it in peson to the Alembic o Cowl offices. F. Slavin Addesses 00 Couples At Annual Caolan Club Weekend Ove 00 couples wee in attendance at the annual Caolan Club Week-End last Fiday, Satuday and Sunday. Highlighting the weekend wee a fomal dinne dance. Fiday evening, a jam session Satuday aftenoon, the vasity basketball game the same evening, a communion beakfast Sunday moning followed by a lectue by the Vey Reveend Robet J. Slavin, O.P. Fiday evening the festivities opened with a lobste dinne seved buffet style in the candle-lit 'Aquinas Dining hall. The dinne was followed by dancing in the lounge to the music of Geoge Champagne and also in the gaily decoated Penguin Room whee Dick Daonco's ochesta held foth. Satuday aftenoon the festivities continued with a jam session in the Penguin Room. Refeshments wee seved duing the couse of the entetainment and wee followed by a buffet lunch. Satuday night the weekendes witnessed the Fias emege victoious ove Renaselae in basketball at the Mt. Pleasant Gym. Sunday moning following the Communion Beakfast, the Vey Reveend Robet J. Slavin. O.P., spoke on the necessity of Catholic action in eveyday living. Following the lectue t h e guests wee shown the ooms in Aquinas Hall. The festivities came to a close Sunday aftenoon with a joint concet given by the glee clubs of Povidence College and Emmanuel College. Baistes Dop Decision On FEPC To Stonehill The P. C. Baistes lost a unanimous decision in an infomal debate to Stonehill College of Noth Easton. Mass., last Fiday aftenoon in the auditoium of Albetus Magnus Science Hall. P. C. was epesented on the Affimative side by Eugene Voll and Richad F. Buckley. The debate was held on the National Foensic topic: Resolved: "That the Congess of the United States Should Enact a Compulsoy Fai Employment Pactices Law." As is the custom of the fist affimative speake, Voll defined the tems of the debate and poceeded to show vaious souces of discimination which, he stated could be emedied by the adaption of a Cumpulsoy Fai Pactices Law. Buckley continued his case along the same line, stessing othe points of discimination, that would demand Compulsoy F.E.P.C. John Matiska Alice: "And what is this?" Mad Hatte: "It's called a hit tune." Alice: "But it doesn't make sense." Hatte: "As I've said, it's a hit tune." Popula music has fo some time povided a means to fame and fotune fo many people. It is a big enegetic business that encompasses bands, vocalists, song wites, lyicists, ecod manufactues, juke box P i m opeatos, and sheet music publishes. Each yea thee ae hundeds of songs tuned out by tunesmiths. Some fade quickly; othes emain. If the song has a catchy melody, a popula vocalist to sing it, and a good ochestal Matiska backgound, it may become what is known as a hit. This means that is is played a geat deal on.juke boxes, disc-jockey adio pogams, and that it is sold on hunde'ds of thousands of ecods. Popula Songs Moonic A ecent suvey, taken by an eminent authoity (whose name will be divulged on equest) evealed that the lyics of the cuent popula songs ae to a geat extent moonic. He also discoveed that they all had something in common, a singula lack of coheence. Some examples teated in the suvey: Miss Patti Paige, of "Tennessee Waltz" fame, has a little gem on the aiwaves at pesent called "The Doggie in the Window." While the tune is catchy and hamless, the lvics ae totued to say the least. In one place she efes to "flashlights that shine in the dak." In anothe spot, a simila example of pondeous eudition comes to light when we lean "you can't take a goldfish fo a walk." Anothe song, in the hillbilly vein, blandly states that "seven lonely days make one lonely week." How seven days could be othe than a week is mysteious, but pehaps the lyicist has his own way of eckoning time. Anothe tune going unde the title of "D'ya Need Any Help" makes no sense at all in both lyics and melody. Pize Is "Oh Happy Day" The song which wins the pize though, is a snappy little ditty which goes unde the title of "Oh Happy Day." Ou analyst had neve listene too closely to the lyics, so he did not feel that he could comment on them, but he did epot that the song and the title "just don't get it." The young man who sings it sounds as though he is suffeing fom an upset stomach, and the melody has the beat of a Chopin funeal mach; yet the singe still insists that it is a "happy day." Fom what ou expet said, I gatheed that the singe is the compose of the song and when he took it to a ecoding company, no one wanted to ecod it, so he did it himself. Now it is a hit. Why? I do not know! The tend in songwiting today seems to be towads songs that have shot titles, e.g. "I," "Cy," "Sin," and nonsensical lyics. What I want to know is what happened to people that could wite such geat songs as "How Did You Believe Me When I Told You That I Loved You When You Know I've Been a Lia All My Life," o "He Put A Ba In The Back Of His Ca And He's Diving Himself To Dink." Witing sensible songs is becoming a lost at. Ou 5th Yea of Publication PROVIDENCE COLLEGE E A T O N S T R E E T AT RIVER A V E N U E P R O V I D E N C E S. Last Satuday night a game between Povidence Collet and RPI was held at Mount Pleasant. It was a highlight c the Dom Week-end festivities, and a good many you ladies wee in evidence. They sighed as handsome Bobi Giffin Moan was pointed out by thei escot as the fellow he hai been talking about since basketball stated, then cast envious glances at Ui young lady fom Booklyn who waited patiently to claim him as soon as the battle ended. Eye Hank McQueeney Speculatively They eyed Hank McQueeney speculatively when told that he might we; be woth thei attention. Then, without any pompting, they asked who the big guy unde the hoop was, and wee told simply that he was Bob Pen degast, the team captain, and that he came fom Hatfod if the young lad, happened to be fom that vicinity. Now t h e escot, tuned basketball expet podded the lady with his elbow and pointed out Vin Cuddy, Ken Ke, ana Tom Mullins, giving a few wods fom his vast stoe of knowledge of each K e was the hustle, the ebounde, Mullins the floo man tuned scoe and Cuddy the tuto. Then they tuned thei eyes to Pendegast as he dwafed the RPI captain and the two efeees in the cente of the cout. Fom that time on they found little time to admie Moan's good looks o McQueeney's spectacula play: Pendegast was the whole show. "Sag" Bight Spot "Sag" thew in hooks, one-handes, and sundy othe shots, as he led the Fias to a hectic victoy by scoing 2 points. In a hoible fis; half he was the only bight spot, and he etained this bightness in second half. Meanwhile, local fans gloated: they had waited fo this fo long time. On the way out of the gym the gils all ageed that Moan looked hadsome in a basketball unifom, McQueeney made them squeal with his slighi of hand, and Pendegast played a whale of a basketball game. Maybe Sagamoe is a lady's man at heat and needs an abundance o( females fo inspiation; maybe the Fias should invite a bevy of the weak e (?) sex to evey game. In any case, we hope they leave the cout talking about Pendegast fom now on. t FRIARS TOP CROSS TOP LEFT: A face-on in the Holy Coss defensive zone; Ed Wholey shooting fo the goal.
