2 2 F r o m t h e P a s t o r s D e s k This weekend is officially the end of the Christmas season. We are now back into the season of Ordinary Time. Of course, there is nothing ordinary about this time of year especially when we realize that we are always in the presence of God who has made His home with us. But, now that we can say that the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holiday is beyond us both commercially and liturgically I would like to begin pushing our new raffle fund raiser for this year. As an update, we currently have 132 tickets already in the pot. There are also at least about 50 packets of tickets already floating around which people have taken to sell to family and friends. The purchased tickets include both those bought individually at $10 a ticket as well as those that people bought as a packet of six tickets for $50. The minimum tickets we need to sell is 680. This minimum amount will cover the prize amounts. If we do not meet that minimum amount required, the prize amounts will need to be adjusted accordingly. Of course, for everyone s benefit, we would like to avoid that so we need everyone to pitch in and make sure that we are able to cover the prize amounts. As I wrote in the bulletin a few weeks ago and as I also announced at Masses last weekend, we need to target a profit of at least $40K. In order for us to meet this goal, we need the assistance of as many people in the parish as possible. As I have mentioned already both in my bulletin article and in our announcements at Mass, this goal is perfectly attainable if at least 100 individual parishioners would sell a minimum of ten packets of tickets each. Every weekend between the three Masses, we have an average of about 500 individuals who pass through the doors of our church. With that in mind, we have more than enough people to help meet this goal. We just need every single person who calls St. Margaret Mary his/her spiritual home to do the best he/she possibly can in terms of selling tickets. I know that in the past ticket selling was left up to a committee of volunteers. But, there is no reason why each and every parishioner would not be able to step up and sell a few packets of tickets. I have heard so many people tell me that they love this parish and so I am again appealing to people s dedication to the needs of this parish. As it is, we are off to a good start. We have just begun to sell tickets in earnest since shortly after the start of the new year. This means that we have already sold 132 tickets in less than a week s time. We have from now until Palm Sunday weekend (April 14 th, 2019) to buy and sell tickets. That gives us plenty of time to surpass our minimum goal and raise as much funds possible for our parish needs. The proceeds of this raffle will not only benefit us by giving us some extra funds to cover our bills. But, we will also be starting to set aside some funds to address the structural needs of the church building. As a parish, we will be celebrating our 100 th anniversary in Knowing that this milestone was coming soon, I had hoped to conduct a major fund raising campaign as part of the celebration. However, given the fact that we are still in the collection phase of the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign which will end in 2020, I did not think that it would go over well to end one major campaign and then almost immediately enter into another major capital campaign. The Finance Committee agreed. With that in mind, I am hoping that raffles such as the one we have currently planned will assist us in raising some of the funds we will need. So, I am again asking that as many parishioners become involved in this process as possible. The more people we have selling tickets the quicker we will reach our goal and surpass it. Since I have been here, it seems to be the trend that parishioners will wait until the very last minute to act on things. I am hoping that this will not be the case this time. The more we sell at the outset, it will only give us a better outcome in the end. I would like to end this article by repeating the incentive of which I spoke at last weekend s Masses. The tickets are grouped into packets of six tickets per packet. You can sell each packet of six tickets to an individual person for $50. Or, you can sell five tickets to five different people and keep the sixth ticket for yourself at no additional cost. You can benefit from the raffle without having to spend anything. If you sell individual tickets, you can collect both the tickets and money (checks made out to SMM) and then you can turn everything over to me or the rectory office. That way, we know to give credit to you for the free ticket that you earned for yourself. If there are any questions, everyone knows how to reach me. Thank you again! Fr. Tirso Villaverde, Jr.

5 F o c u s o n t h e W o r d 5 CYCLES OF FAITH Baptism of the Lord "Think of what it's like to wait a long time. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from generation to generation. They had been conquered time and time again, and now "the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ." They had been waiting for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said profound things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be disappointed. But what if your hopes were fulfilled? That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gathered. Among the crowd for baptism was an unknown man. Perhaps he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the Baptist may have embraced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good, solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man. But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove." An apparition with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gentleness and power all at once. "And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'" Can you imagine the sight? For the crowd, there is no doubting what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imagine this encounter with our God who keeps His promises? What are you waiting for? REST IN PEACE Our blessed Lord has called home Patricia Jansz Sorensen and Julie Lis for whom we promise our prayers that they may live in joy in His presence.
