Parker Assembly 1820 New Bern, NC VOLUME 2013, ISSUE 1 Feb 2013 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE My wife and I attended the Annual Prayer Breakfast in Raleigh. There were 200 or more in attendance all with one voice and conviction to stop abortion. We kill thousands of babies per year, and these children, through no fault of their own, are put into a situation that only we can rectify; we are their only voice. As I listen to talks about how 10% of babies do not survive because of miscarriage or other non- preventable deaths, the other 90% are planned abortions. Msgr. James R. Jesus said Come Watch one Hour with Me As I listened to the speakers, I could not help but think about our grandson Justin. It has been five years this past January since his passing. Justin was born with everything in the proper place and was an overall healthy baby. A couple of weeks after being home, he developed an ear infection that resulted in a high fever. The fever would not subside. Justin had to be hospitalized, and after further tests, he was diagnosed with HLH, a rare and complicated condition. We spent the next five months at DuPont Children s Hospital in Delaware. We watched as our little person was equipped with feeding tubes, pick lines, and monitors all over him. We watch as they proceeded to try to save this child s life using radical chemotherapy and then a bone marrow transplant. Justin fought hard but did not make it. Although he was in our lives for just five months, he is forever in our hearts. We spent 5 months trying to save our grandson, and yet others try so hard to kill their children. Why? President Ronald Reagan, when ask about abortion, said, I ve noticed everyone who is for abortion has already been born. How true. Vivat Jesus! Patrick Rocco, GK RIGHT TO LIFE New Bern Knights and their spouses, along with members of St. Paul's parish, attended the Prayer Breakfast for Life on Saturday January 19th in Raleigh. The event was followed by the Right to Life March and Rally in which over 2000 people that included 700 children along with members of the Clergy and State Legislature gave voice and prayer in painful recognition of the 40th Anniversary of Roe v Wade culminating in the death of millions of innocent little ones in the womb. It remains a viable hope that change through prayers and sacrifices within our lives and those of the legislators, both State and National, can and will take place to insure the future protection and preservation of the sanctity of all human life from conception to natural death. 2 PAGE 2 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2013, IS SUE 1 Faithful Navigator s Report Sir Knights, as we move ahead into the eighth month of this fraternal year, we enter the month of February, a very significant time in the Church s calendar where we begin the Lenten season on the 13th. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a time of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. We are asked, as Catholic Christians, to do three things during this Lenten period: Pray, Fast, and give Alms. If we stay focused on these three things, we should get through Lent and have done our part as far as what we have been thought in our Catholic upbringing. Maybe in the quiet moments of our lives we could also include a little meditation and reflection. Meditate on the life of Christ and what the Father was asking the Lord to do for the salvation of us all and reflect on how that would influence us to be better Catholic gentlemen. It is evident to me that by being a member of the Knights of Columbus and practicing the Principles of our Honored Order, we are indeed closer to God and Church because we are ready to do His will and serve His cause. Sir Knights, may this Lenten season through prayer, fasting, and Almsgiving open our hearts and minds and bring us even closer, spiritually, to our creator. Please keep in mind that a 4 th Degree Regional Exemplification will be held at the Hall on 9 March All 3 rd Degree Knights are eligible to receive the honors of this degree. Supreme has waived the 6-month requirement for 3 rd Degree Knights, so there is no waiting period. It is a perfect opportunity to become a 4 th Degree Knight without the expense of traveling out of town. I m asking that all Sir Knights talk to our 3 rd Degree Brothers and interest them in this Exemplification. Form 4 s and other info can be obtained from our Faithful Comptroller, Bill Camp or any of the Assembly Officers. For those 4 th Degree members who are willing to help out with the Exemplification, please contact Danny G. Our next Yard Sale is scheduled for 8 & 9 February. It looks like we are on track to have another successful sale. Contact Danny G. for more information on how you can get involved, or just stop by on Tuesday morning with your sleeves rolled up. Remember to keep our deceased Brothers and their families in your prayers. Let us not forget to pray for all the members of our armed forces, especially those in harm s way keeping us safe, protecting our freedom and our way of life. Sir Knights, keep a rosary in your pocket, a song in your heart and be of service to somebody Vivat Jesus! FN, Rich Tomasik St. Paul Catholic School is proud to invite everyone to their second annual gala. Please plan on attending our fabulous Reach for the Stars Gala on Saturday, February 16, 2013, from 6:30pm to 11:30pm. This event, for the benefit of the school, will be held at the North Carolina History Center-Tryon Palace. This gorgeous setting, overlooking the Trent River, is located at 529 South Front Street, New Bern, with ample free parking. Appetizers will start off this dining feast. Well-known Chef Jason Haines will present a gourmet dinner. You will have a choice of smothered chicken or a bacon wrapped filet for your dining pleasure. To end the dinner, a scrumptious dessert will be served. A full cash bar will be available all evening. To highlight this affair, music will be provided by the well known Shake Doctors. This five-piece band has been well received in the many places they have played throughout the area. They will play a variety of music for all to dance or listen to. In such a beautiful setting, this promises to be a memorable evening of dining and dancing for everyone. Put on your fancy clothes (black tie optional), your dancing shoes, and have an incredible night to remember. What a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine s Day! To add to this event, there will be both a silent and live auction. What a fun packed evening this will be. The cost is $50 per person, and if desired, tables of eight are available to reserve at an incredible price of only $350. For tickets, please call St. Paul School at (252) or visit You may leave a message at school and someone will return your call. Deadline for ticket sales is Wednesday, Feb. 6th, so get your tickets early. Sandy and Nancy Stewart PR St. Paul Catholic School

He works unselfishly behind the scenes and can always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Knights Remove St Paul Christmas Decorations We had a fabulous turnout of Knights, which was GREAT. 4 PAGE 4 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2013, IS SUE 1 DGK Comments Brothers, this is another appeal to you who have not been too active recently. We NEED your help with our ongoing projects. We have many things we are trying to accomplish to improve our Council, Church, and Community, but we cannot do it without some additional assistance from our Brothers. I realize many of our younger Brothers work and cannot help with events that start early in the evening. However, we have many things that need your involvement and help so our Council can continue to make our Church and Community a better place to live. Please contact our Grand Knight or myself to see where you can join us in Fraternity and Service. Vivat Jesus Dick Dodson DGK With Sincere Thanks! The Columbus Club Board of Directors would like to thank Walter Sierocki for his many years of devoted service behind the bar at the KofC Hall. He also brought many fellow Knights, and their spouses, closer together with his Pub Nights that were put on by himself and his lovely wife Dena. But fear not, for you can still see his familiar face at Monday Night Bingo. If anyone is interested in running the bar please contact Columbus Club President, Jerry Vivat Jesus! Sir Knight of the Month In recognition of his many outstanding accomplishments and contributions, Sir Knight Douglas Uhland is enthusiastically recognized as the Fr. Kenneth I. Parker Assembly Sir Knight of the Month for January Sir Knight Doug Uhland is presently an Officer of the Assembly and Chairman of the Bingo Committee. He has been a member of the Bingo Committee for some years and has been the driving force behind the success of the Knight s Bingo activity over the past four or five years. Income from that activity has doubled over the past four years which has resulted in the Knights ability to substantially increase its charitable donations in several areas of the parish and extended community. Doug, along with his wife Nancy helps with our Yard Sales, another source of income for our many charitable donations. He is an Officer in the local chapter of the American Legion and has been involved with LAMB activities and the Wounded Warriors Leave program.. His dedication to the Order, his Assembly, and his fellow Knights, along with his commitment to Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism make Sir Knight Douglas Uhland truly deserving of this award. FN Richard Tomasik, Kenneth I. Parker Assembly #1820 Knight of the Month February 2013 The Knight of the Month for February 2013 is Joe Urbaniak. Joe has been a Knight for over 10 years, and he has been active in many Knights projects. He is always working quietly behind the scenes in many Knights activities like Bingo, the Lounge renovation, and many more projects. He volunteers at the Hospital and is an Usher at the 8 AM Mass on Sunday. Thanks, Joe, for all your work in making our community a better place to live. Dick Dodson DGK A Sincere Thank You to the Frame Game Our thanks to the owners of the Frame Game in Jacksonville for their support of the K of C 4 th Degree Yard sale activities. Sherry Latoz, the owner and Allison Brinson, the store manager have been assisting Marie Senzig and Cindy Gennantonio by cutting glass and mats for some of our picture frames, and actually go far beyond by assembling them for us as well. This is part of their service to the community and for non-profit groups at no cost to them. Recently Cindy and Marie presented them a basket of cookies and a certificate of appreciation for all they do for the Knights. Pictured L-R, Cindy Gennantonio, Sherry Latoz, and Allison Brinson. 5 PAGE 5 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2013, IS SUE 1 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS A SPECIAL THANKS to Brothers Bill Elliott, Jimmy Bottcher and Ken (Sarge) Barber for putting up our Handicap Signs at our Main Building. Thanks for your usual fantastic work. Annual LAMB Dinner The LAMB program for 2012 is now complete and we will be holding our annual pot luck dinner on February 19, At the dinner we will be distributing the funds collected to educators and leaders in the three county areas who run programs for the Intellectually Disabled. The Knights will provide the meat (ham) and would like each guest to bring a side dish with enough to feed 8 people. Social ½ hour will begin at 5:30PM and dinner will start at 6:00PM. We would like those with names starting with A to G to bring salads or appetizers. Those with names starting with H to M bring vegetables, and all others would bring desserts. Please call LAMB Chairman Jim Weber so we will have an idea of how many are coming so we can provide enough meat. HELP! Our golf cart at St. Joseph's Cemetery just died! We need a mechanic who can work on small gas engines. If you can help, call John Spier at or Danny G. at Some Lenten Thoughts Soon we ll find ourselves immersed in another Lenten Season, a time of sacrifice and repentance that the Church sets aside each year to help us re-align our lives with the agony and exhilaration of Christ s final hours among us: His Crucifixion and Resurrection. From the moment of His human birth, Christ s entire life reflected a mysterious but inevitable journey toward His final experiences of the agony of dying on a cross and the exhilaration of His Resurrection from the tomb that would open the gates of heaven and save us from our sins. Made in the image and likeness of our Creator, as we attempt to follow in Christ s footsteps, each of us experiences our own moments of agony and exhilaration. Through the events of the past few years of my life, God has invited me to look at a lot of things with a fresh perspective. One of these involves the traditional notion of giving something up for Lent. Instead of foregoing TV, beer, or chocolate, why not start by getting back to basics? What do I do with a close friend? I take the time to talk and listen to him/her often, sometimes daily. As my loving Creator, God yearns to have just such a relationship with me. Perhaps if I do nothing else this Lent, I will set aside, i.e. give up, just 10 or 15 minutes of quiet time each day, just me and God to build/re-build our relationship. Key element: quiet time. That means fighting the well-intended urge to fill the quiet time with a litany of formal prayers. Just like with my friend, I need to be silent in order to hear what God has to say. There are plenty of useful daily reflections available to help me get started. Once I begin, I need to be patient and keep coming back each day. Sooner rather than later, I will hear God s voice speaking to me. The Gospels offer numerous examples in Jesus life where He did just that went off alone to pray to His Father. If I manage to begin committing this daily alone time with God, when Lent has ended, and we have celebrated the risen Lord at Easter, I can continue to celebrate my own resurrected relationship with my Heavenly Father.
